The European and Americas Hernia Society's (EHS and AHS) Guidelines on the treatment of primary midline ventral hernias were launched to guide surgeons. As a part of a dissemination plan of the ...guideline, this study aimed to evaluate the level of consensus between recommendations and the current surgical practices of EHS and AHS members before implementation.
A questionnaire was constructed including questions on the current practice of the members and nine selected key recommendations from the guidelines. An on-stage consensus voting was performed at the EHS Congress in Hamburg 2019 followed by a SurveyMonkey sent to all EHS and AHS members. Consensus with a recommendation was defined as an agreement of ≥70%.
A total of 178 votes were collected in Hamburg
A further 499/1,754 (28.4%) of EHS and 150/1,100 (13.6%) of AHS members participated in the SurveyMonkey. A consensus was reached for 7/9 (78%) of the recommendations. The two recommendations that did not reach consensus were on indication and the technique used for laparoscopic repair. In current practice, more AHS participants used a preformed patch; 50.7% (76/150) compared with EHS participants 32.1% (160/499),
< 0.001.
A consensus was achieved for most recommendations given by the new guideline for the treatment of umbilical and epigastric hernias. Recommendations that did not reach consensus were on indication and technique for laparoscopic repair, which may reflect the lack of evidence on these topics.
Monitoring student assistants' tasks effectively is a significant part of management. The BACC Squad at Dahlgren Memorial Library are student assistants who help maintain the printers, copiers and ...computers within the library. Since technology is a large part of their job, it is important that they use innovative tools for performing their tasks. Dahlgren Memorial Library utilizes several tools for tracking work: Zapier, iPad, SurveyMonkey and GroupMe. The implementation, utilization, benefits and issues encountered will be discussed.
The increasing level of Internet penetration over the last decade has made web surveying a viable option for data collection in academic research. Software tools and services have been developed to ...facilitate the development and deployment of web surveys. Many academics and research students are outsourcing the design and/or hosting of their web surveys to external service providers, yet ethical issues associated with this use have received limited attention in academic literature. In this article, the authors focus on specific ethical concerns associated with the outsourcing of web surveys with particular reference to external commercial web survey service providers. These include threats to confidentiality and anonymity, the potential for loss of control over decisions about research data, and the reduced credibility of research. Suggested guidelines for academic institutions and researchers in relation to outsourcing aspects of web-based survey research are provided.
Reference departments track patron interactions to illustrate the type and number of services provided as well as to tailor librarians' time and expertise to the interest and needs of their patrons. ...Until 2010 the Reference, Education, and Community Engagement Department at the Calder Memorial Library tracked statistics using a complicated system of paper tic sheets and two Excel™ spreadsheets. After considering different electronic systems, the department decided to employ an electronic form created with SurveyMonkey™ to track patron interactions. After the system had been in place for three months, the authors administered a satisfaction and use survey to collect faculty and staff feedback on the new system. Seven months later the authors undertook usability testing to collect further evaluative data on the electronic form. The patron interaction form continues to be used to collect statistics, provide data for annual reviews, and recognize the contributions of all faculty and staff at the library.

Metaphors are figures of speech in which a word or phrase that denotes a certain object or idea is applied to another word or phrase to imply some similarity between them. Due to their ability to ...make speaking and writing more lively and interesting, metaphors have always been popular among students. While metaphors provide significant enhancement of contexts and build upon the sense of community, they can limit the boundaries of the communication between students and teachers. In order to carry out student oriented courses, teachers ought to consider the metaphors students use. In an effort to understand and fill in this communication gap, the authors of this paper have initiated a study that aimed to drive out the e-education students' metaphors in order to suggest a vision for future e-courses. The authors have designed the "E-Education Metaphor Analysis Survey" that comprised 35 items and captured data about e-education students' metaphors. The questionnaire was posted on Surveymonkey.com and was distributed to e-education students in two countries: Turkey and Cyprus. 352 students filled the questionnaire. The answers revealed that the metaphors students use are influenced by their way of life, their personal characteristics, their educational background and their feelings. Internet was the most common metaphor used for e-education. A very interesting fact was that 47% of the students considered E-Student to be equivalent to "rich students' education" and that the term recalled them the metaphor "richness". Although there were many research studies on common metaphors and their impact on e-education, there were no studies in the literature about eLearning metaphors. This paper presents an innovative approach that focuses on 7 key research questions and represents a first step of a more detailed future project undertaken by the authors. (Contains 2 tables and 3 figures.)
A common practice in HCI research is to conduct a survey to understand the generalizability of findings from smaller-scale qualitative research. These surveys are typically deployed to convenience ...samples, on low-cost platforms such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk or Survey Monkey, or to more expensive market research panels offered by a variety of premium firms. Costs can vary widely, from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the platform used. We set out to understand the accuracy of ten different survey platforms/panels compared to ground truth data for a total of 6,007 respondents on 80 different aspects of demographic and behavioral questions. We found several panels that performed significantly better than others on certain topics, while different panels provided longer and more relevant open-ended responses. Based on this data, we highlight the benefits and pitfalls of using a variety of survey distribution options in terms of the quality, efficiency, and representative nature of the respondents and the types of responses that can be obtained.

This research project seeks to identify the advantages and disadvantages of using podcasts and other e-learning technologies to support students with assessments. Through a range of mediums students ...were asked about their experiences of engaging with e-learning strategies and their subsequent effect on assignment writing. This work in progress outlines the context of this research and the feedback received to date.
This chapter provides the methodology used for the Crump/Freund study and survey tool in detail and analyzes the data results. Each of the five partner libraries participating in this unique study is ...profiled, including general demographic information for the parent academic institution. The authors then provide a summary of the results of the library user and library staff surveys, respectively. The chapter concludes with an analysis of the survey questions that comprise the comparative study results and may or may not support the authors’ supposition that a divide exists between the perceptions of library staff and the needs of the users they serve.
