Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are parasites of soil-dwelling insects that occur in natural and agricultural soils around the world. Thanks to their entomotoxicity, EPNs are good tools for biological control in agriculture almost everywhere in the world. They are ubiquitous, having been isolated from every inhabited continent (except Antartica) from a wide range of ecologically diverse soil habitats including cultivated fields, forests, grasslands, deserts, and even ocean beaches. Biogeographic assessments of EPNs in the Eastern Mediterranean basin have been conducted in several countries such as Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Palestine and Egypt. Lebanon is among the few countries of the Middle East for which no survey of EPNs has been done. The scientific stake is thus to fill a gap in our knowledge of EPNs distribution in the Mediterranean basin. Survey of EPNs was conducted in this framework to cover the different vegetation levels defined in Lebanon. Soil samples were removed placed in contact with Galleria mellonella to isolate entomopathogenic nematode and their symbiotic bacteria. EPNs and their bacteria were then identified morphologically and molecularly. On the other hand, despite the different national surveys conducted on EPNs distribution around the world, habitat preferences remain inadequately known for entomopathogenic nematodes. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of their distribution and the various biotic and abiotic factors influencing their presence is also a second object of our work. Beside a technological approach related to the biological properties of the nematodes and their symbiotics: valorisation of the entomotoxicity in biological control will be part of the third shutter of the thesis. In this framework, the sensibility of cedar pests, Cephalcia tannourinensis against entomopathogenic nematodes is exploited in vitro; different EPNs species were tested to study their life cycle inside Cephalcia larvae.
Within the framework of innovative neutronic conception of Pressurized Light Water Reactors (PWR) of 3rd generation, saving of natural resources is of paramount importance for sustainable nuclear energy production. This study consists in the one hand to design high Conversion Reactors exploiting mixed oxide fuels composed of thorium / uranium / plutonium, and in the other hand, to elaborate multirecycling strategies of both plutonium and 233U, in order to maximize natural resources economy. This study has two main objectives: first the design of High Conversion PWR (HCPWR) with mixed oxide fuels composed of thorium / uranium / plutonium, and secondly the setting up of multirecycling strategies of both plutonium and 233U, to better natural resources economy. The approach took place in four stages. Two ways of introducing thorium into PWR have been identified: the first is with low moderator to fuel volume ratios (MR) and ThPuO2 fuel, and the second is with standard or high MR and ThUO2 fuel. The first way led to the design of under-moderated HCPWR following the criteria of high 233U production and low plutonium consumption. This second step came up with two specific concepts, from which multirecycling strategies have been elaborated. The exclusive production and recycling of 233U inside HCPWR limits the annual economy of natural uranium to approximately 30%. It was brought to light that the strong need in plutonium in the HCPWR dedicated to 233U production is the limiting factor. That is why it was eventually proposed to study how the production of 233U within PWR (with standard MR), from 2020. It was shown that the anticipated production of 233U in dedicated PWR relaxes the constraint on plutonium inventories and favours the transition toward a symbiotic reactor fleet composed of both PWR and HCPWR loaded with thorium fuel. This strategy is more adapted and leads to an annual economy of natural uranium of about 65%.
Introduction. Conclusion.
Introduction. Plantains and bananas are a commonly consumed food crop and are an important staple food in the Cameroonian economy. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can improve banana growth. A study was conducted in pots under a screen house in Njombé (Cameroon) with vitroplants of plantain (Musa AAB, cv. Bâtard) to evaluate their reaction to mycorrhization on five soils with different levels of fertility. Materials and methods. The plants were inoculated with a local strain of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (Glomus sp.) during the weaning phase. Growth parameters (girth, height, leaf number and leaf surface area, fresh weight and percentage of dry matter) and mycorrhizal parameters (frequency and intensity of mycorrhization) were observed after eight and twelve weeks of inoculation. Results and discussion. Eight weeks and twelve weeks after inoculation, plant growth parameters were significantly higher in infected compared with non-infected plants. Inoculated plants showed a significant increase for all growth parameters studied, compared with non-inoculated plants, irrespective of the soil type. The mycorrhizal effect was also significant on fresh weight and percentage of dry matter, with higher values in inoculated plants compared with non-inoculated plants. The highest mycorrhizal frequency was registered in plants on poor soils. Conclusion. Our results show that mycorrhization of plantain has a beneficial effect on some fertile soils, but this effect is more significant on poor soils. Confirmation of these results in field trials is necessary in order to verify whether mycorrhization of plantains can improve growth and yield on poor soils at a low cost.
Brassicas contain glucosinolates (GSL) which decomposition is able to reduce the growth of populations of soil-borne fungi, bacterias or nematodes. These biocid effects on soil-borne microorganisms ...make a form of allelopathy phenomenon. The allelopathic properties depends on the GLS composition of the Brassicas: Indian mustard and in a lower extend Oilseed rape could have the most powerfull action, White mustard would have a weaker action. These properties also depends on crop residues: green manure with quick decomposition would result with a higher action than crop residues after grain harvest. The main mechanisms are known. In vitro, isothiocyanates obtained from the GSL decomposition inhibit all the phases of the cycle of Aphanomyces eutiches, the fungus responsible for root rot of peas. The mycelian growth of Gaeumannomyces graminis tritici, the fungus responsible for the wheat take all is inhibited by some isothyocyanates at low concentration. Furthermore, several studies give the evidence that the incorporation of Brassicas residues into the soil does inhibit the growth of both soil-borne pathogens. At last, the presence of roots of Brassicas inhibits the germination of the mycorhizes known to improve the mineral nutrition of its host plant. This phenomenon could explain the depressive effect of oilseed rape on the nutrition of a subsequent maize. This knowledge of Brassicas effects into cropping systems offers issues for a better management of precedent effects of Brassicas; these effects being positive (integrated cop protection) or negative (management of subsequent crop nutrition after Brassicas).
