The Boston Harbor Islands have been called Boston's "hidden shores." While some are ragged rocks teeming with coastal wildlife, such as oystercatchers and harbor seals, others resemble manicured ...parks or have the appearance of wooded hills rising gently out of the water. Largely ignored by historians and previously home to prisons, asylums, and sewage treatment plants, this surprisingly diverse ensemble of islands has existed quietly on the urban fringe over the last four centuries. Even their latest incarnation as a national park and recreational hub has emphasized their separation from, rather than their connection to, the city. In this book, Pavla Šimková reinterprets the Boston Harbor Islands as an urban archipelago, arguing that they have been an integral part of Boston since colonial days, transformed by the city's changing values and catering to its current needs. Drawing on archival sources, historic maps and photographs, and diaries from island residents, this absorbing study attests that the harbor islands' story is central to understanding the ways in which Boston has both shaped and been shaped by its environment over time.

Der Läuterprozess ist die Fest/flüssig‐Trennung einer Suspension. Die internationale Brauindustrie setzt für diese Aufgabe überwiegend Maischefilter oder Läuterbottiche ein. Verfahrenstechnisch ...handelt es sich dabei um eine Kombination aus Siebfiltration und Tiefenfiltration, wobei insbesondere beim Läuterbottich die Tiefenfiltration überwiegt. Beide Verfahren sind technisch hochentwickelt und brautechnologisch spezialisiert. Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über den Status quo der Läutertechnik hinsichtlich Konstruktion und Leistungsfähigkeit sowie ihrer jeweiligen Einflussnahme auf die Bierbereitung. Abschließend werden zukünftige Forschungs‐ und Entwicklungsziele in der Läuterarbeit aufgezeigt und zur Diskussion gestellt.
The lautering process is the solid‐liquid separation of a suspension. For this purpose, the international brewing industry mainly uses mash filters or lauter tuns. From a process‐technological point of view, this process involves a combination of screen filtration and deep‐bed filtration, whereas the deep‐bed filtration mainly prevails in the lauter tun. Both are technically sophisticated and technologically specialized processes. The article provides an overview of the status quo of lautering technology in terms of design and performance as well as their respective influence on the beer production. Finally, future research and development objectives regarding the lautering process are presented and put up for discussion.
Die Trennung von Maische in Würze und Treber ist der zentrale Verfahrensschritt im Sudhaus einer Brauerei. Klassische Vorrichtungen für diesen Läuterprozess sind der Maischefilter und der Läuterbottich. Diese Systeme sind weitgehend ausoptimiert. Deshalb werden neben dem Stand der Technik auch Ansätze für Neuentwicklungen aufgezeigt.
This article looks at the role of the technocracy in economic policy-making in Malaysia. The analysis was conducted across two phases, namely the period before and after the 1997/98 economic and ...financial crises, and during the premiership of four prime ministers namely Tun Razak, Dr Mahathir, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and Najib Razak. It is claimed that the technocrats played an important role in helping the political leadership achieve their objectives. The article traces the changing fortunes of the technocracy from the 1970s to the present. Under the premiership of Tun Razak, technocrats played an important role in ensuring the success of his programs. However, under Dr Mahathir, the technocrats sometimes took a back seat because their approach was not in line with some of his more visionary ventures and his unconventional approach particularly in managing the 1997/98 financial crisis. Under the leadership of both Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Razak, the technocrats regain their previous position of prominence in policy-making. In conclusion, the technocracy with their expert knowledge,have served as an important force in Malaysia. Although their approach is based on economic rationality, their skills have been effectively negotiated with the demands of the political leadership, because of which Malaysia is able to maintain both economic growth and political stability.

If you take Boston's Blue Line to its northern end, you'll reach the Wonderland stop. Few realize that a twenty-three-acre amusement park once sat nearby-the largest in New England, and grander than ...any of the Coney Island parks that inspired it. Opened in Revere on Memorial Day in 1906 to great fanfare, Wonderland offered hundreds of thousands of visitors recreation by the sea, just a short distance from downtown Boston. The story of the park's creation and wild, but brief, success is full of larger-than-life characters who hoped to thrill attendees and rake in profits. Stephen R. Wilk describes the planning and history of the park, which featured early roller coasters, a scenic railway, a central lagoon in which a Shoot-the-Chutes boat plunged, an aerial swing, a funhouse, and more. Performances ran throughout the day, including a daring Fires and Flames show; a Wild West show; a children's theater; and numerous circus acts. While nothing remains of what was once called "Boston's Regal Home of Pleasure" and the park would close in 1910, this book resurrects Wonderland by transporting readers through its magical gates.
On 1st December 2018 a fisherman caught a specimen of the giant tun Tonna galea (Linnaeus, 1758) in the bottom trammel net for flounders, approximately 1 Nm outside the town of Izola. The net was ...placed on a muddy bottom at 20 m of depth. This is the second record of T. galea in the Slovenian waters (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea). Another specimen (the first one) was previously reported in October 2015 in the waters off Piran. By including T. galea in the checklist of Slovenian marine malacofauna, at least 370 gastropod species were up to date recorded in the Slovenian part of the Adriatic Sea.
Population parameters of Polymesoda erosa and P. expansa in Marudu Bay were estimated based on 1 year (June 2017 to May 2018) monthly length-weight frequency data. A total of 1087 and 2057 specimens ...of P. erosa and P. expansa, respectively were successfully collected and analysed. Results of the study demonstrated that the estimated asymptotic length (Linfi;), growth coefficient (K), total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M), fishing mortality (F) and growth performance (ф) of P. erosa were 92.4 mm, 0.76 yr-1, 2.22 yr-1, 0.76 yr-1, 1.44 yr-1 and 3.81 yr-1, respectively. The exponent b of the length-weight relationship was 2.27 and exploitation level (E) was 0.65. On the other hand, the asymptotic length (L ), growth coefficient (K), total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M), fishing mortality (F) and growth performance (ф) of P. expansa were 92.4 mm, 0.82 yr-1, 2.77 yr-1, 0.82 yr-1, 1.95 yr-1 and 3.85 yr-1, respectively. The exponent b of the length-weight relationship was 2.24 and exploitation level (e) was 0.7. The condition index of P. erosa and P. expansa were 2.28±0.49 and 2.31±0.67, respectively. It was also noted that both P. erosa and P. expansa exhibited continuous recruitment with the peak in June and November, respectively. However, they seemed to experience over-fishing as evidenced by the level of exploitation which was beyond the maximum sustainable yield (MSY). Hence, immediate implementation of a sustainable management plan is critically needed to ensure this resource remains viable in Marudu bay.

The effect of synthesis conditions on the preparation and properties of three novel zeolites TUN, IMF, and -SVR was investigated and compared with MFI. X-ray powder diffraction, infrared ...spectroscopy, chemical analysis, sorption measurements, and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the textural and chemical properties of these zeolites. FTIR spectroscopy in combination with pyridine as probe molecule was used to describe the type, concentration and acid strength of these zeolites. Zeolite -SVR was synthesized with Si/Al ratios higher than 100 in contrast with TUN and IMF having Si/Al ratios about 20–30, respectively. TUN, MFI and IMF zeolites exhibit similar concentrations of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites and also similar acid strength of Brønsted sites. In contrast, the presence of one vacancy/unit cell in the case of -SVR zeolite substantially changes its acidic properties. Generally, zeolites TUN and IMF exhibit similar acidic properties in terms of acid strength and Brønsted to Lewis acid site ratio like MFI and due to their slightly larger pores higher activities in catalytic reactions are expected.
