This paper analyzes the soap opera Escrava Isaura, aired in Brazil by the network Rede Globo from October 11, 1976 until February 5, 1977. Based on Bernardo Guimarães’ novel written in 1875, Escrava ...Isaura enjoyed attention from both the media and a vast national audience at a time when television had become a significant and influential medium. The narrative and aesthetics displayed showed a complex relationship between History and fiction, establishing a peculiar view of the past and slavery. Escrava Isaura launched a lively discussion in the press around slavery, patriarchy, and national identity at a time of military rule in Brazil.

"This book explores Canadian history documentary and docudrama programming on CBC television since its beginnings in 1952. During this fifty-year period, television was a uniquely powerful medium ...--at once intimate and widely shared, reaching millions of people. CBC was the only Canadian broadcaster to consistently show history programming and has played a unique role in shaping Canadians' perceptions of their history. Analyzing the major works of Canadian history on CBC television over fifty years -- Explorations (1956-63), Images of Canada (1972-76), The National Dream (1974), The Valour and the Horror (1992), and Canada: A People's History (2000-02) -- reveals patterns and developments in content and presentation. As the author argues, these developments were not arbitrary but were impelled by a wide range of external factors: developments in broadcasting policy and regulation in Canada; television industry developments, including competition from a growing American market and for new Canadian broadcasters (such as CTV and Global) for viewers and for advertising revenue; the evolution of television itself, including the standards and financing of production and attention to ratings, technological change, and job creation; and the evolution of journalism and the role of journalists as supposed authorities. This book is both a critique of public history and a political economy of television production. The author has three major findings."--

Our study focuses on Sesame Street and sets out to examine how Sesame Workshop, as a 'nonprofit' organization targeting children, has been able to continuously transform and make itself relevant in a ...predominantly commercial children's television landscape dominated by transnational ownership structures. The analysis includes an investigation of Sesame Workshop's mission statements, organizational structure, annual fiscal reports, promotional material and other written sources from the 1970s to the 2010s. We focus on the Workshop's own arguments and reasons for why their 'non-profit' status was, and still is, better at taking care of children's interests than the for-profit companies. These understandings are held up against the, at times, very commercial logic guiding the workshop's business model, and analysed within the economic and political context of children's television in the United States and the Workshop's key international target markets. Our theoretical framework draws upon insights from work on political economy and children's media and comparative media systems.
Reading films, television dramas, reality shows, and virtual exhibits, among other popular texts, Engaging the Past examines the making and meaning of history for everyday viewers. Contemporary media ...can encourage complex interactions with the past that have far-reaching consequences for history and politics. Viewers experience these representations personally, cognitively, and bodily, but, as this book reveals, not just by identifying with the characters portrayed. Some of the works considered in this volume include the films Hotel Rwanda (2004), Good Night and Good Luck (2005), and Milk (2008); the television dramas Deadwood, Mad Men, and Rome; the reality shows Frontier House, Colonial House, and Texas Ranch House; and The Secret Annex Online, accessed through the Anne Frank House website, and the Kristallnacht exhibit, accessed through the Unites States Holocaust Museum website. These mass cultural texts cultivate what Alison Landsberg calls an "affective engagement" with the past, tying the viewer to an event or person and fostering a sense of intimacy that does more than transport the viewer back in time. Affect, she suggests, can also work to disorient the viewer, forcibly pushing him or her out of the narrative and back into his or her own body. By analyzing these specific popular history formats, Landsberg shows the unique way they provoke historical thinking and produce historical knowledge, prompting a reconsideration of what constitutes history and an understanding of how history works in the contemporary mediated public sphere.

From Ken Burns's documentaries to historical dramas such as Roots, from A&E's Biography series to CNN, television has become the primary source for historical information for tens of millions of ...Americans today. Why has television become such a respected authority? What falsehoods enter our collective memory as truths? How is one to know what is real and what is imagined -- or ignored -- by producers, directors, or writers?
Gary Edgerton and Peter Rollins have collected a group of essays that answer these and many other questions.
