In Late Medieval Europe, apparitions were often interpreted as manifestations of restless souls from purgatory, seeking the help of the bereaved. Induced by a complex set of theological ...re-interpretations, Protestant authorities, however, considered it impossible for the souls of the dead to wander the earth and to haunt the living as ghosts. Apparitions of spirits were rather understood as the works of the devil - and on a broader level - as divine temptations and punishments of sin. Additionally, Reformed authorities prohibited all kinds of interactions with these entities. Yet, lived experiences were more complex than that. More often than not, everyday interpretations of and dealings with spirits deviated from the theological stance, causing diverse social and legal issues up until the 18th century. Assessing an extensive body of primary sources from the Swiss archives, this dissertation seeks to shine a light on the tensions between theology and lived experiences.
Das Lachen ist zwar seit Aristoteles als Wesensmerkmal des Menschen anerkannt und wurde doch in der christlich gepragten Gelehrtenkultur marginalisiert und damonisiert. Diese Ausgrenzungsgeschichte ...ist noch bis ins 21. Jh. daran erkennbar gewesen, dass es keine einzige Uberblicksdarstellung zum vielgestaltigen Phanomen gab, wahrend die Theologie um das Lachen entweder einen groen Bogen machte oder es nur im sittsamen Gewand des Humors in seine heiligen Hallen hineinlie. Die vorliegende Studie stot in dieses Vakuum hinein, indem sie dem Phanomen zunachst in seinem ungeheuren kultur- und geistesgeschichtlichen Facettenreichtum auf den Grund geht und in einem zweiten Schritt die Bedeutung des Lachens fur den christlichen Glauben reflektiert. Vor dem Hintergrund der traditionellen heilstheologischen Verfemung des Lachens erinnert sie an den Reichtum einer versunkenen christlichen Lachkultur und versucht sich an einer Rehabilitierung und Neubestimmung der geheimnisvollen Auerungsform. Damit leistet sie nicht nur einen wichtigen Beitrag zur anthropologischen Vermessung des Phanomens, sondern skizziert daruber hinaus Deutungsansatze fur eine zeitgema leibfreundliche, diesseitsorientierte und skeptische Theologie.

Satan, Beelzebub, Luzifer? der Teufel hat viele Namen und Gesichter; sie alle haben Künstlern stets als ...Inspirationsquelle gedient. Bilder von Teufeln wurden oftmals von kirchlichen Personen von hohem Rang in Auftrag gegeben, um, je nach Gesellschaft, mit Bildern der Furcht oder Ehrfurcht und mit Darstellungen der Hölle die Gläubigen zu bekehren und sie auf den von ihnen propagierten rechten Pfad der Tugend zu geleiten. Für andere Künstler, wie z. B. Hieronymus Bosch, waren sie ein Mittel, um den völligen moralischen Verfall seiner Zeit anzuprangern. Auf dieselbe Weise hat die Beschäftigung mit dem Teufel in der Literatur oftmals Künstler inspiriert, die den Teufel mithilfe von Bildern austreiben wollten; dazu gehören insbesondere die Werke von Dante Allighieri und Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Im 19. Jahrhundert fühlte sich die Romantik zunächst von dem mysteriösen und ausdrucksvollen Gehalt des Themas angezogen und setzte die Verherrlichung der Böswilligkeit fort. Biographical note: Marie-Thérèse Mourey est professeur émérite d’histoire littéraire et culturelle du monde germanique à Sorbonne Université, Faculté des Lettres.
