The paper deals with the role played in Christian apologetics by the euhemeristic explanation of pagan myths. While hardly present in Greek Christian apologetics at all, it was quite popular in Latin ...and employed by all important apologists from Tertullian to Augustine. The article focuses on the euhemeristic elements in Tertullian and Arnobius, with brief references to other authors. Latin apologists used euhemeristic principles chiefly to show the humanity and moral depravity of the pagan gods, in order to render their worship obsolete. The only one to defend the divinity of Christ by representing him as a benefactor of mankind was Arnobius, but his attempts were unsuccessful and found no followers.

The article discusses the Arnobius’ apologetic writing Against the Heathen, whereby the author’s (at least among Christians) unconventional concept of divinity is the special point of interest. The ...introductory part of article discusses some rare notices on Arnobius’ life, preserved mainly in Jerome’s writings, his main sources and his influence in later centuries. The main part of the paper is dedicated to Arnobius’ representation of Christian God in opposition to pagan gods. The author’s main objective is to show the perversity and wrongness of pagan worship. This is done by his emphasis of the gap between God and man, based on his peculiar anthropology. This is of particular importance, because Arnobius’ criticism of paganism is greatly built on euchemeristic principles. So his degradation of pagan gods is total, even if he acknowledges their existence. To achieve his purpose he also strictly denies any possibility of allegoric interpretation of myths, particularly popular with Neoplatonic philosophers of his time.
