The sustainable governance of transport systems remains a significant challenge for policy makers worldwide, particularly in cities. Urban areas are developing rapidly from a technological viewpoint, ...and innovative technologies create new possibilities for smart mobility management. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between the implementation of the smart city concept and the idea of sustainable transport, particularly with regard to the reduction of transport generated CO2 emissions. The study estimates CO2 emissions for different potential scenarios of development for the Warsaw transport system until 2050 using the United Nations' ForFITS (For Future Inland Transport Systems) model. The study also analyses the additional impact on CO2 emissions of smart city elements as determinants of mobility. The results show that meeting the reduction targets set by the European Union 2011 White Paper on Transport will be challenging, requiring an in-depth transformation of the transport and energy sectors. This study also confirms that smart city solutions can play a crucial role in mitigating transport emissions and meeting reduction goals. The conclusions provide important insights for the design of smart mobility governance and enhance the relationship between transport policy and research.
This work is a re-examination of the decisions regarding the 1944 Warsaw Uprising made by the leadership of the underground Polish Army (AK), as well as the questionable attitudes of senior Polish ...commanders in exile in London. McGilvray's work is supplemented with Polish sources as well as interviews with five women who had been involved in the Warsaw Uprising as young women and girls in 1944.
Jews imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto pondered not only how to survive the present but also the days to come. The day of liberation was calculated on the basis of rumours, interpretations of wartime ...developments, and Kabbalistic prophecies. In this paper, among different notions of the future expressed by the inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto, I focus especially on the perspective of Jews active in various parties and youth movements. I approach the question of what Jews thought about the future and what would lead to it within the broader context of the sociology of time. The primary source used in this paper is the Jewish underground press published in the Warsaw Ghetto.
Theoretical background: A share split is an operation that increases the total number of shares. The split is a technical operation and should not affect the market value of the company. The ...shareholding structure of the company remains unchanged when the shares are split. However, split studies around the world show the occurrence of abnormal returns. Purpose of the article: The article analyses splits based on market data from 2009 to 2021. The aim of the study is to analyse the cumulative average abnormal returns (CAARs) in the periods preceding stock splits on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE). CAARs are analysed in different research variants. The influence of the stock market situation and the frequency of splits on the amount of abnormal returns is examined. Research methods: The research was carried out using event study analysis. The Market-Adjusted Return Model was used to determine abnormal returns. CAARs were calculated for each analysed event window. The statistical significance of abnormal returns was verified by the parametric t test and the non-parametric Corrado rank test. Main findings: The study showed statistically significant positive abnormal returns in the 30-day period preceding the split. The hypothesis that multiple splits cause particularly high increases in the market value of companies has not been confirmed. Research on the reaction to splits depending on the state of the stock market situation did not allow unambiguous conclusions in the case of the periods when the WSE Index (WIG) increased. Weaker reaction to planned splits in the period of worse market conditions was confirmed.
Joy H. Calico examines the cultural history of postwar Europe through the lens of the performance and reception of Arnold Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw—a short but powerful work, she argues, ...capable of irritating every exposed nerve in postwar Europe. Schoenberg, a Jewish composer whose oeuvre had been one of the Nazis’ prime exemplars of entartete (degenerate) music, immigrated to the United States and became an American citizen. Both admired and reviled as a pioneer of dodecaphony, he wrote this twelve-tone piece about the Holocaust in three languages for an American audience. This book investigates the meanings attached to the work as it circulated through Europe during the early Cold War in a kind of symbolic musical remigration, focusing on six case studies: West Germany, Austria, Norway, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. Each case is unique, informed by individual geopolitical concerns, but this analysis also reveals common themes in anxieties about musical modernism, Holocaust memory and culpability, the coexistence of Jews and former Nazis, anti-Semitism, dislocation, and the presence of occupying forces on both sides of the Cold War divide.

At the height of the Nazi extermination campaign in the Warsaw Ghetto, a young Jewish woman, Irena, seeks the protection of her former lover, a young architect, Jan Malecki. By taking her in, he puts ...his own life and the safety of his family at risk. Over a four-day period, Tuesday through Friday of Holy Week 1943, as Irena becomes increasingly traumatized by her situation, Malecki questions his decision to shelter Irena in the apartment where Malecki, his pregnant wife, and his younger brother reside. Added to his dilemma is the broader context of Poles' attitudes toward the "Jewish question" and the plight of the Jews locked in the ghetto during the final moments of its existence. Few fictional works dealing with the war have been written so close in time to the events that inspired them. No other Polish novel treats the range of Polish attitudes toward the Jews with such unflinching honesty. Jerzy Andrzejewski's Holy Week ( Wielki Tydzien, 1945), one of the significant literary works to be published immediately following the Second World War, now appears in English for the first time. This translation of Andrzejewski's Holy Week began as a group project in an advanced Polish language course at the University of Pittsburgh. Class members Daniel M. Pennell, Anna M. Poukish, and Matthew J. Russin contributed to the translation; the instructor, Oscar E. Swan, was responsible for the overall accuracy and stylistic unity of the translation as well as for the biographical and critical notes and essays.

The Warsaw Society of Friends of the Sciences, active in the first decades of the 19th century, contributed to the development of scientific life in Poland. The Society took interest in medical ...sciences in a broad sense, among other things, and from the very beginning its members included many medical doctors. Among the works published in the “Yearbooks of the Royal Warsaw Society of Friends of the Sciences” were a number of papers on medicine, presented in this article.
This article discusses Polish nationalists' fear of "Judeo-Polonia," a notion that emerged before the First World War, gained considerable traction during the war itself, and then began to morph into ..."Judeo-Communism" by war's end. Focusing on Warsaw, the article discusses the significance of population movements and demographic shifts, the appearance of new opportunities for political competition based both on identity politics and the prospect of an independent Poland, and the preordained failure of the new state to accommodate more than one national group after 1918.

Is it possible to apply the concept of Altersstil to Bernardo Bellotto’s career as a painter? Significant changes can be described in his work on the basis of three criteria: the expansion of the ...urban space, the role of the staffage figures and self-portrait. A comparison with paintings from the Dresden phase will be used to characterise Bellotto’s Altersstil in the Warsaw vedute. As a case study, Bellotto’s work is suitable for adding a facet to the concept of Altersstil, which on the one hand takes into account the personal experience of his own career, and on the other hand, includes the requirements of changing patrons in the interpretation of the Alterswerk.
