The London‐based Oily Cart theatre company aims to produce shows that are suitable for all young people. This paper closely examines one of their productions, Splish Splash, which was developed for ...children with profound and multiple learning difficulties. The paper's central purpose is to understand the value of this type of theatrical experience for these children. It argues that Winnicott's conception of play, and his account of the conditions that enable the capacity for play to unfold, provide a persuasive theoretical framework that makes sense of Oily Cart's achievement. Winnicott's framework can integrate the views expressed (in interviews) by adults who were involved with or observed the show; arguably it is also corroborated by more recent infant research.
This article aims to link current research on intersubjectivity with psychoanalytical texts in order to reopen the debate on models for understanding the classical psychiatric classifications of psychoses (schizophrenia, paranoia, melancholy).
This text is based on a comparison of current scientific publications on the different elements constituting intersubjective processes (indifferentiation, agentivity, theory of mind, empathy, inter-intentionality..) with D. W. Winnicott's 1959 paper, in which he proposes a psychiatric classification that takes into account the degree and quality of the distortion or deficiency of the links with the environment that may have occurred at a stage of maximum dependence.
The intersection of these two approaches may make it possible to make the role of intersubjective links in defensive organizations intelligible, allowing us to better distinguish the different forms of psychosis.
It is possible to sketch a model linking psychotic pathologies with the expression of differentiated intersubjectivity disorders from three propositions. And thus, to take up, in a new form, the propositions articulated in 1959 by D. W. Winnicott. In schizophrenia, the expression of psychic suffering is accompanied by a blurring of the articulation between indifferentiation and intersubjectivity. In paranoia, the pathology is structured around a particular disorder in the search for the intention of others, a disorder of “inter-intentionality” as defined by R. Roussillon. Finally, melancholy can appear in a rupture of the empathic bond in the absence of the object.
This modeling does not replace the major Freudian, Kleinian, and Lacanian psychoanalytical theoretical ensembles. It can, however, make it possible to develop a model that improves the intelligibility of the intersubjective links that are woven in the context of psychotherapeutic treatments of the various forms of psychosis, even though they generally take a chaotic form.
This book explores how the work of key child development theorists informs music therapy practice with children and families. Focusing primarily on the theoretical thinking and understanding of the ...paediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, Alison Levinge highlights how his theories resonate with the central aspects of music therapy. Central to the book are Winnicott's ideas on play and an exploration of his understanding of the psychological processes of 'holding'. Winnicott's theories are given greater depth and understanding by referencing the writings of Adam Phillips and Christopher Bollas. Consideration of relevant aspects of Bowlby's theories will also be included. Knowledge of these theories of child development helps to support understanding of the music therapy process, making this book vital reading for both students and practitioners of music therapy.
This article contributes to the growing critical literature that situates the British Psychoanalyst and pioneer of life writing Marion Milner within the modernist tradition, not only as a Freudian ...but as someone who extends the modernist project through her studies of technique and method. Focusing on the practice of drawing in two key Milner texts - On Not Being Able to Paint (1950) and The Hands of the Living God (1969) - I explore Milner's clinical and aesthetic preoccupation with space and spacing. By way of Milner's somewhat distanced dialogue with Freud and much more intimate dialogue with Winnicott, as well as via a consideration of material from the Marion Miner archives, I demonstrate how Milner's technical and clinical praxis offers an alternative articulation to the model of deep memory. Specifically, through her development of a spatial idiom, I propose that Milner's dedication to working at the surface - including tracing and copying her patient's drawings - permits mimicry to stand in for memory so that the lost background of her patient Susan can be re-drawn.
L’œuvre théorique de D.W. Winnicott (1896-1971).
This is the second monograph to be published under the auspices of Winnicott Studies, the Squiggle Foundation’s renowned series of publications on contemporary applications of Winnicott’s thought. ...Like its predecessor, which concentrated on the True and False Self, this volume focuses on a single topic: Winnicott’s treatment of fathers.
The volume includes a reprint of Winnicott’s 1965 paper, “A child psychiatry case illustrating delayed reaction to loss”, which is followed by John Forrester’s “On holding as a metaphor”, which expands and comments on many of the issues which Winnicott raises. John Fielding then provides an insight into Shakespeare’s treatment of father-figures; Graham Lee outlines a new approach to the Oedipus complex in the light of Winnicott’s insights; and Val Richards concludes with some clinical and theoretical thoughts. Taken together, these papers provide an intriguing composite picture of Winnicottian thought today, on a topic which is of increasing social and cultural interest.
