Si la couleur est un des critères d’observation pris en compte par le médecin égyptien dans l’établissement du diagnostic médical, son rôle dans le choix de la materia medica pour les remèdes est, ...lui, plus difficile à estimer. La situation est tout à fait différente dans le domaine contigu et associé de la magie, dans lequel la couleur est un élément important dans le choix des matériaux constitutifs des amulettes. Cette contribution propose quelques éléments de réflexion sur les implications de la couleur dans ces deux domaines des pratiques thérapeutiques et prophylactiques, en distinguant différents aspects de la couleur : la couleur comme éclat et lumière, la couleur comme matière et la couleur comme outil classificatoire.

The two fossil shark teeth mounted as pendants from two excavations of Bordeaux are unprecedented discoveries in Gaul. The identification and the color of these pieces confirm their local origin. ...Their availability in the Miocene marine outcrops close to Bordeaux might have motivated an adaptation of teeth pierced pendants for a protective purpose. This practice seems limited to the Bordeaux area during the Roman Antiquity.
La découverte de deux dents de requin fossiles montées en pendentif sur deux fouilles de Bordeaux est inédite en Gaule. L’identification et la coloration de ces pièces confirment leur origine locale. Leur disponibilité dans les affleurements du Miocène marin à proximité immédiate de Bordeaux a très probablement motivé une adaptation des pendentifs à dents percées à vocation protectrice, pratique qui semble limitée à la région bordelaise durant l’Antiquité.

The present article provides a new assessment of the ritual dedicated to Skanda, the Skandayāga or Dhūrtakalpa, which is described in the chapter XX of the Pariśiṣṭas of the Atharvaveda. First it ...gives a brief survey of the previous points of view on this text, which understand it as a ritual performed by thieves to honour a malevolent deity. Although these interpretations associated Skanda with his devotees, the devotional aspect of this ritual had not yet been highlighted. The analysis of the hymns dedicated to Skanda reveals that there is an interpersonal relationship between Skanda and the sacrificer who honours him, that the deity is praised as a warrior and martial god and that the aims of the ritual are absolutely not fraudulent acquirements: the devotee wants to gain a powerful status amongst the other devotees and to obtain release and immortality. On this basis, the different arguments of the previous studies which claimed Skanda is the god of thieves through the epithet Dhūrta are reassessed. A philological analysis shows it is possible to understand the epithet in a different manner. This new identification of the god, the aims of the ritual and the use of an amulet allow to determine the status of Skanda’s devotees: they belong to the ruling class.Hence the Skandayāga provides evidence of the emergence of a devotional current within the Atharvavedic environment and the ruling classes.
Le présent article propose une réévaluation du rituel dédié à Skanda, le Skandayāga ou Dhūrtakalpa, décrit dans le chapitre XX du Pariśiṣṭas de l'Atharvaveda. Il donne d'abord un bref aperçu des précédentes études sur ce texte, qui le envisagent celui-ci comme un rituel accompli par des voleurs pour honorer une divinité malveillante. Bien que ces interprétations lient Skanda à ses fidèles, elles ne soulèvent pas l'aspect dévotionnel de ce rituel. L'analyse des hymnes dédiés à Skanda aboutit à plusieurs constats : une relation interpersonnelle est établie entre Skanda et celui qui l'honore; le dieu est loué en tant que guerrier et dieu martial; l'objet du rituel ne relève pas d'actions frauduleuses. Il apparaît que par ce rite, le dévot espère acquérir un statut puissant parmi les autres dévots et obtenir la libération et l'immortalité. À partir de ce constat, les différents arguments des études précédentes qui prétendaient que Skanda est le dieu des voleurs par l'épithète Dhūrta sont réévalués. Une analyse philologique propose une manière différente de comprendre l'épithète. Cette nouvelle identification du dieu, les buts du rituel et l'utilisation d'une amulette semblent indiquer une appartenance des dévots de Skanda à la classe dirigeante.Ainsi, le Skandayāga pourrait témoigner de l'émergence d'un courant dévotionnel au sein de l'environnement atharvavédique et des classes dominantes.
Il est commun qu’en Afrique les rites mis en œuvre pour le bien-être de l’enfant fassent intervenir des amulettes. Chez les Bassar du Togo, une catégorie particulière d’entre elles est étroitement ...associée à un rite très singulier dans sa forme en ce qu’il est pour l’essentiel un simulacre visant à duper l’enfant à qui l’on fait croire que l’opération accomplie réunit tous les traits d’un rite authentique alors même que le traitement précis de ce cas exige qu’il n’en soit rien. Ce rite « pour de faux », délibérément « vidé » de ce qui en fait l’efficacité dans un contexte ordinaire, est cependant déclaré indispensable au bon développement de l’enfant. L’article analyse les constituants de cette situation paradoxale en s’appuyant sur l’exploration des principales formes d’amulettes pour enfant que connaît la société bassar et en explicitant les croyances relatives aux rapports avec les différentes facettes de l’autre monde auquel l’enfant reste longtemps lié.
Rites carried out in Africa for the child’s well-being frequently call upon the use of amulets. For the Bassar of Togo, a particular category of amulets is associated with a very singular rite: essentially, this rite is a pretence to deceive the child making him or her believe that the process to which he or she is subjected is the usual authentic rite, whereas the treatment of the precise case should not involve it. So, the simulated rite is deliberately emptied of the usual effectiveness it would have had in an ordinary context. However, it is, in such a case, considered essential for the child’s development. We therefore face a paradoxical situation whose elements will be analyzed, leading from the examination of the principal forms of children’s amulets in use in the Bassar society, and making explicit the beliefs regarding the different facets of the other world to which the child will remain linked for a long time.
