Anthropology is by definition about others, but in this volume the phrase refers not to members of observed cultures, but to significant others—spouses, lovers, and others with whom ...anthropologists have deep relationships that are both personal and professional. The essays in this volume look at the roles of these spouses and partners of anthropologists over the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, especially their work as they accompanied the anthropologists in the field. Other relationships discussed include those between anthropologists and informants, mentors and students, cohorts and partners, and parents and children. The book closes with a look at gender roles in the field, demonstrated by the marriage in the late nineteenth century of the male Anthropological Society of Washington to the Women’s Anthropological Society of America. Revealing relationships that were simultaneously deeply personal and professionally important, these essays bring a new depth of insight to the history of anthropology as a social science and human endeavor.
Fingermarks used in forensic investigation are biometric elements widely utilized in identification thanks to their unique and classifiable characteristics. Despite numerous studies investigating ...fingermark development on different surfaces, few studies have addressed the skin surface of deceased individuals, given the challenging nature of this substrate. This study investigated the transfer and development of fingermarks on human skin that had been systematically deposited over the forehead, neck, and wrist. Additionally, gender, age, and the time elapsed since deposition were issued as additional factors impacting fingermark development. Therefore, we prepared a study setting representing a crime scene by modelling the scene and then utilized 400 fingermarks. The marks transferred to thermal paper were developed by applying ThermaNin and magnetic black fingermark powder as fingermark development methods and then photographed. They were then evaluated for their suitability for identification via scoring and statistical analysis. The results indicated that 36% of all marks obtained from the skin of living persons and 66% of those from skin surfaces of dead bodies received the highest score and were assessed as suitable for identification. Despite the negative effect of increased time since deposition, it was revealed that the ThermaNin method yielded better results than magnetic black fingermark powder.

In the wake of anthropology’s much storied crisis of representation; attempted corrections following movements of “Third World” peoples, women, and queer folks; the recent disavowal of 1980s and ...1990s reflexivity and experimentation; and what George Marcus has recently termed a “crisis of reception,” this essay seeks to critically reassess and reanimate the formative interventions of anthropologists of the African diaspora (including Africa itself)—foregrounding work that lends new insights into anthropological theory, method, and pedagogy. The intention here is not to merely redeem the pioneering insights of African diaspora anthropologists as unsung forerunners of contemporary anthropological theories (though this is a worthwhile endeavor in itself) but rather to illuminate continued and prospective contributions of this mode of knowledge production.
To speak of global white supremacy is to point to the racial dimensions of an international power system that includes an ideology of white (broadly defined ) racial superiority and its related sets ...of practices. However, it remains difficult to operationalize the historical reality of white supremacy within anthropological theory and practice. For even as mainstream anthropology has acknowledged the significance of race, it has yet to thoroughly engage the role of white supremacy, especially global white supremacy, as part and parcel of the baseline understanding and functioning of the modern world. In anthropological treatments of the postcolonial state, the emergency and consolidation of neoliberalism, or even in current popular trends, such as work on the "anthropocene" and the "ontological turn," an analysis of white supremacy is often missing. This is so even when there are mentions of race and racialization. How can we as anthropologists speak of neoliberalism, for example, without keeping in constant view the context of white privilege and power that structure both global capitalism and (post/neo)colonialism?

The idea that Lesy ČR, s.p., Severomoravské vodovody a kanalizace, a.s., Pražské služby, a.s., the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency, the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic, the Czech ...Catholic Charity, ČEZ, a.s., or perhaps the Hradec Kralové City Magistrate put out calls for anthropologists to help them analyze problems in their areas of activity and propose a solution that will improve the services provided, increase economic and ecological sustainability, avoid conflicts with local residents and extend services to the largest possible number of potential users is then, unfortunately, from the realm of dreams. Fortunately, this is not the case elsewhere in the world, and we can therefore look for inspiration for how to transform the rich knowledge and unique methods of anthropology into socially valued and in-demand work even in the conditions of the Czech Republic.
