The geological reserve of Piekiełko (Tomaszów Lubelski district, Lublin voivodeship, Poland) was established in 1962 to protect the sandstone boulders untypical of this region. There are ...anthropogenic earthen ramparts in their immediate vicinity. The presence of the ramparts and boulders contributed to the recognition of this place as an archaeological site – an immovable archaeological monument. Owing to local legends and its peculiar folk name (Piekiełko means “little hell”), scientific monographs and heritage tourism have regarded Piekiełko as a prehistoric or medieval place of worship. However, despite the distinctive land relief and a prominent place in local tradition, Piekiełko has never been subject to in-depth archaeological research. As a result, we could only have speculated on the original function of the ramparts, their chronology, cultural affiliation, and potential relation to the boulders. This paper addresses the need to determine the history of Piekiełko and systematize the history of research concerning this place. It presents the results of interdisciplinary research using geological and archaeological methods, complemented by analysis of archival sources: written, cartographic, and iconographic.
This dataset comprises machine-generated data from the research records and personal archives of four founding members of the transdisciplinary field of cybernetics—W. Ross Ashby, Warren S. ...McCulloch, Heinz von Foerster, and Norbert Wiener. These archives (or, fonds) are held by the British Library, the American Philosophical Society, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and MIT, respectively. The data were created for “The Cybernetics Thought Collective: A History of Science and Technology Portal Project” (2017–2019), a pilot project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Using computational methods and tools—machine learning, named entity recognition, and natural language processing—on digitized archival records, the data were generated to enhance archival access in three distinct but interrelated ways: as archival metadata for the digitized records, as reusable data to facilitate digital scholarly analyses, and as the basis for a series of test visualizations. The data represent entities associated with cybernetic concepts and the main actors attached to the cybernetics movement and the exchange of its ideas. The dataset is stored along with the digitized records in the University of Illinois (U of I) Library’s multi-tiered repository, a replicated preservation service based on PREMIS (Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies). Reuse potential for this dataset includes historical/archival, linguistic, and artistic analyses of the data to examine connections between the cybernetic entities. La investigación tuvo por objetivo analizar el proceso de digitalización y ordenamiento del archivo histórico en el cantón Azogues. Se trabajó fundamentalmente en gestionar la sistematización de ...experiencias desarrolladas durante la aplicación del proyecto de digitalización y ordenamiento del archivo histórico, desarrollado por la facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Católica de Cuenca. A través de este proyecto se ha podido llevar un control interno administrativo de las operaciones registrales que se realizan, así como también, el tiempo de entrega de los documentos se ha reducido de manera considerable. Se llegó a determinar mediante el estudio estadístico la necesidad de llevar el control interno administrativamente de la operación registral.
The article investigates the structure and composition of the archival records of the Institute of Geography of NAS of Ukraine, the peculiarities and the chronological sequence of the creation of the ...archival records. The purpose of the research was to analyze how informative are archival records in providing the data on main areas of geographical research performed by NAS of Ukraine. Secondly, we aimed to study the process of organizing activities of the Institute of Geography of NAS of Ukraine. Another objective was to summarize the results of the scientific work of outstanding scientists of this Institute.
The text summarises the development of archive legislation in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic regarding the rules for making archival records available, recapitulates the development of one ...particular case that came to the Constitutional Court and posed a potential threat to a number of Czech archives and to the research on the most recent history in general. It deals with the issue of lustration and the problems with working with the files of the former security forces, which are a very specific source. The author also considers the relationship between archivists and historians and their responsibilities and tasks in relation to the public.
