In Rage and Denials , philosopher and architectural
historian Branko Mitrović examines in detail the historiography of
art and architecture in the twentieth century, with a focus on the
debate ...between the understanding of society as a set of individuals
and the understanding of individuals as mere manifestations of the
collectives to which they belong. The conflict between these two
views constitutes a core methodological problem of the philosophy
of history and was intensely debated by twentieth-century art
historians-one of the few art-historical debates with a wide range
of implications for the entire field of the humanities. Mitrović
presents the most significant positions and arguments in this
dispute as they were articulated in the art- and
architectural-historical discourse as well as in the wider context
of the historiography and philosophy of history of the era. He
explores the philosophical content of scholarship engaged in these
debates, examining the authors' positions, the intricacies and
implications of their arguments, and the rise and dominance of
collectivist art historiography after the 1890s. He centers his
study on the key art-historical figures Erwin Panofsky, Ernst
Gombrich, and Hans Sedlmayr while drawing attention to the writings

Robins thoroughly explores the squared grid systems used by the ancient artists to proportion standing, sitting, and kneeling human figures. This investigation yields the first chronological account of proportional variations in male and female figures from the Early Dynastic to the Ptolemaic periods. Robins discusses in detail the proportional changes underlying the revolutionary style instituted during the Amarna Period. She also considers how the grid system influenced the composition of scenes as a whole. Numerous line drawings with superimposed grids illustrate the text.

The complex relationship between art and time lies at the heart of our discipline. As art historians, we often set out to place art and architecture within particular time frames. We look to ...establish dates of production, explore the biographies of creators and patrons, and examine an era’s artistic practices and visual conventions. Some of us even try to recover the works that have not survived over time. Chronologies and various modes of periodization structure art history and its subfields; artistic developments are commonly described in terms of temporal progressions, from early to late phases. We also look at how art shapes concepts of time, especially when it articulates real or imagined histories, creates visions of the future, or captures perceptions of the present. One of art’s most unique features is its capacity to generate, bridge, and collapse temporalities. And timelessness stands as one of the best possible qualities ascribed to masterpieces.
