This article advances a blueprint for small colleges interested in implementing new international studies programs. In response to a call from its strategic plan, the faculty at Lebanon Valley ...College (LVC) recently approved an IS program with two concentrations (international affairs and comparative culture) emphasizing core and advanced elective courses, foreign language, study abroad, as well as undergraduate research, and internship experiences. This article frames the undergraduate international studies program within the broader context of the prevailing literature and identifies the potential advantages and drawbacks of initiating and directing the major and minor. It then provides a brief discussion of the ways in which the program can be assessed and a general overview of the career opportunities available to majors. The article concludes by recommending that small colleges like LVC have the potential to prepare students for the responsibilities of global citizenship when international studies programs are designed to incorporate and maximize college-wide strengths.
This article will consider the creative solutions developed by Renaissance and Baroque artists in relation to the subject of Cain and Abel with particular reference to the large number of depictions ...from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that focus on the bodies of Cain and Abel locked together as monumentally framed, struggling nudes. It will view the interest of Renaissance artists in this aspect of the subject as reflecting a sixteenth and seventeenth century fascination with violence and internecine dysfunctionality, on the one hand, as well as with the protocols of ancient and modern hand to hand combat, on the other. The subject of Cain and Abel gave Renaissance and Baroque viewers the chance to indulge momentarily in the dreaded taboo of the dark underbelly of the subject of brotherly love -- and to consider its terrible beauty alongside its more apparent moral infamy.
In this paper the results of a basic study of the chemical composition and structure of soapstone are reported. An investigation of the effects of aqueous sulfuric acid solutions on the physical ...integrity of the stone was also performed. The studied soapstone samples had a lamellar nanostructure as verified by DRX data. Furthermore, they contained isolated silanol (Si-OH) groups, as indicated by FTIR data, and the majority of the silicon atoms were bonded to OH groups, as shown by 29Si CPMAS NMR analysis. Is was also shown that a low resistance to acid attack is associated with a large amount of magnesium and/or iron in the stone.
In the XVI century a family of artists appears in what is now Colombia led by Baltazar de Figueroa, known as «The Elder». Only based on his painting style and with no additional documents some ...specialists attributed him a provenance from Seville. Gabriel Giraldo Jaramillo jus-tified his hypothesis with a group of documents that, after thorough analysis and the discovery of some additional ones, led us to confirm that they refer to a homonymous painter who never left the Spanish city.
Abstract
This article examines the role of myth in Italian cultural politics in the Baltic region during the Baroque era. A special focus for this analysis is the legend about a "kinship" between the ...Florentine Pazzi family and the Lithuanian noble family of the Pacas (Polish: Pac), known in the sources of the seventeenth century as "the Pazzi in Lithuania." This legend prevailed particularly in the second half of the Baroque period, having developed under the influence of different political, religious, and social aspects of Baroque culture. It played an important part in the Papacy's interests in Poland-Lithuania during the Counter-Reformation and in the commercial activity of Italian merchants in the Baltic, which coincided with the expansion of the monastic orders in this region and the cult of St. Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi, to whom the Pacas family expressed their devotion.
