Abstract (english): DigiSchreib – A tool to support teachers in the choice and use of digital writing tools in German classrooms The article covers the conception and development of the assessment tool for digital writing tools DigiSchreib. It is intended to support teachers in the didactically meaningful use of digital writing tools in linguistically heterogeneous German classes. It is the first instrument that deals specifically with writing tools for vocational schools. In contrast to previous instruments, DigiSchreib focuses on a didactic view that is closely linked to empirical findings and practical needs. The needs were identified with the help of a questionnaire survey (n=81) of German/communication teachers in Hamburg and Lower Saxony. The tools were evaluated with the help of a qualitative description within different categories (findings from writing empirics, user experience, didactic assessment, data protection). The writing tools analysed in DigiSchreib are recorded by means of a document collection and systematised within the evaluation tool. DigiSchreib will be evaluated with expert interviews, adapted and made freely available to teachers as OER.

Abstract (english): What beliefs do teachers at vocational schools have about digital writing tools and how do they use them? - A questionnaire study in Hamburg and Lower Saxony Information and communication technologies and digital educational resources have undergone rapid development and have been rapidly introduced into educational contexts. Teachers play a key role in integrating these technological resources into the classroom. According to the ‚will skill tool‘ model, in addition to digitisation-related competences, beliefs and prior experience in the use of digital tools play a major role in the integration of digital media into the classroom. The aim of this study is to find out how teachers at vocational schools in northern Germany work with digital writing tools in their lessons and what beliefs they have about their application in the classroom. Through an online quantitative questionnaire in which 81 teachers participated the necessary information was collected. The results show that teachers apply word processors in class and discuss how to use them. More elaborate writing tools are not worked with much, not because teachers refuse to, but because they have little information about their availability and quality.
Images of Chinese teens with their heads buried in books for hours on end, preparing for high-stakes exams, dominate understandings of Chinese youth in both China and the West. But what about young ...people who are not on the path to academic success? What happens to youth who fail the state's high-stakes exams? What many—even in China—don't realize is that up to half of the nation's youth are flunked out of the academic education system after 9th grade. Class Work explores the consequences for youth who have failed these exams, through an examination of two urban vocational schools in Nanjing, China. Through a close look at the students' backgrounds, experiences, the schools they attend, and their trajectories into the workforce, T.E. Woronov explores the value systems in contemporary China that stigmatize youth in urban vocational schools as "failures," and the political and economic structures that funnel them into working-class futures. She argues that these marginalized students and schools provide a privileged window into the ongoing, complex intersections between the socialist and capitalist modes of production in China today and the rapid transformation of China's cities into post-industrial, service-based economies. This book advances the notion that urban vocational schools are not merely "holding tanks" for academic failures; instead they are incipient sites for the formation of a new working class.
This research project conducted an in-depth, qualitative assessment of vocational education and training (VET) teachers’ perceptions of pedagogic innovation, with an emphasis on obstacles and ...supporting factors. The main research question was: “How do teachers’ roles and perspectives shape innovation processes in VET and what does this imply for the development of teaching and learning practices?” Three clusters of subsidiary questions were derived around thematic foci: ‘perceptions and concepts’, ‘documentation of practice’, and ‘dynamics, limitations, and lessons for innovation’. Based on analytical strategies derived from grounded theory, two phases of interviews – the first with ten experts and the second with 62 VET practitioners at 20 colleges – were conducted in England, Germany, and Austria, with a focus on full-time VET (Further Education Colleges, Berufskollegs, and Berufsbildende Mittlere und Höhere Schulen) in the 16-19 age range. Classroom observation preceded semi-structured, 30 to 60 minute interviews with teachers. The study builds on previous research and existing frameworks such as Lipsky’s concept of ‘street-level bureaucracy’ and Flyvbjerg’s ‘critical cases’. However, it fills a gap in the literature by focusing on practitioner perceptions, motivations, professionalism, autonomy, work contexts, and own learning in relation to pedagogic innovation, whilst tracing relevant connections to educational policy, college management, and societal influences. Teachers are shown in multiple roles as inventors, designers, and implementers of innovation, facing nine categories of obstacles. Those include limited time and budgets, bureaucracy and lack of autonomy, problems with project planning and execution, and issues related to lack of support. In addition, this study provides a comparative investigation of practitioners’ interpretations of key terms (‘pedagogy’, ‘didactics’, ‘innovation’), revealing differences between England on the one hand, and Germany and Austria on the other, based on different degrees of autonomy and innovative focus. Based on such findings, the study details recommendations for college leaders and policy makers for facilitating pedagogic innovation, placing each in their respective national contexts.
