The COVID-19 pandemic has led to economic and health crises (“twin crises”) worldwide. Using a sample of firms from 73 countries over the period January to December 2020, we examine stock price ...reactions of multinational corporations (MNCs) and purely domestic companies (DCs) to the crisis. We find that, on average, MNCs suffer a significantly larger decline in firm value relative to DCs during the stock market crisis caused by the pandemic with notable heterogeneity in this underperformance across both industry and region. The evidence of MNC underperformance is robust to using abnormal returns, an alternative crisis window, a matched sample that accounts for differences in characteristics between MNCs and DCs, alternative model specifications, and alternative proxies for multinationality. Further analysis on the effect of government responses on the valuation gap suggests that stringent government responses exacerbate MNCs’ underperformance. Finally, we show that a stronger financial system mitigates negative crisis returns, especially under stringent government responses, while real factors, such as the firm’s supply chain, investments in human capital, research and development, exacerbate negative crisis returns. Our findings have important implications for managers of MNCs and government policymakers alike and contribute to studies on the international diversification–performance relation by demonstrating a dark side of globalization during a tail-risk event.
Incorporating sustainable decisions with the retailer’s operational management has attracted enormous significance due to government regulations and customer demand for environmental consciousness. ...However, incorporating sustainable operations may interfere with the operational performance of the firm and, hence, retail companies need to examine the influence of these operations on overall supply chain efficiency. The present study develops a performance measurement model based on a two-stage network data envelopment analysis (DEA) technique for measuring the joint impact of sustainable operations and operational activities on the business performance of a retail company. A case study of an Indian electronic retail chain is presented to reveal the potentiality and suitability of the proposed models. The novelty of the paper lies in establishing DEA models for an Indian retail chain company and for providing an analytical understanding of the conditions under which the strategic decisions at the operational level successfully support the integration of sustainable operations into the SC management. The results show that the additional sustainable constraints lead to improved operational efficiency of some firms of the retail chain and result in improved business efficiency, while for other firms the integration of sustainable objectives decrease business efficiency. The significance of the study lies in providing efficient target conditions for inefficient retail stores to improve their performance. The findings of the study provide meaningful insights to Indian retailers venturing into sustainable retailing operations for enhancing the operational and business efficiency of the supply chain.
The security of agricultural sector development is increasingly becoming a relevant issue in modern conditions, as the agricultural sector determines the sustainability of the economy and ensures the ...country’s food security. Growing risks, such as climate change, economic difficulties and geopolitical conflicts, highlight the need to improve the security of agricultural production systems, which makes the study relevant. The study aimed to conduct a systematic analysis of innovative tools for managing the risks of production activities of agricultural enterprises and their impact on the formation of secure development in the agricultural sector of Ukraine. To achieve this goal, the method of analysis and modelling was used. Study results indicate that innovative approaches to risk management have a decisive impact on the sustainability and efficiency of agricultural production systems. To achieve a stable level of safe development of agricultural enterprises, it is necessary to focus on the implementation of key areas, such as maintaining the food base at a level sufficient to ensure a healthy diet, ensuring an adequate level of effective demand for the population and eliminating dependence on imports, aimed at protecting the interests of domestic producers of agricultural raw materials. The study demonstrated that institutional factors of risk management form an integrated system, where efficiency depends on the implementation of specific strategies for the development of agricultural institutions aimed at introducing innovative tools into the production cycle of agricultural enterprises. Furthermore, due to the accumulation of large amounts of production, financial, logistical and innovative potential of agricultural enterprises in the Forest-Steppe and Polissia regions, the level of safe development of agricultural enterprises is significantly increasing. This indicates their high capacity for sustainable reproduction of production and making a significant contribution to the agricultural sector of Ukraine. The study is of practical importance for agricultural enterprises, research institutions and government agencies, which can use the results to improve risk management strategies and increase the level of security of agricultural sector development
Analyzing business development in emerging economies has been a long time focus of theorists. Predilection for asset management or labor effectiveness may present a disparate progression in neighbor ...regions. This paper creates a snapshot of asset management predilection, labor evolution and turnover analysis in Dobrogea region with a correlative perspective of the two indicators. The methodology of our paper is a case study approach, with particular focus on context observation and quantitative analysis of operational and financial metrics. The comparison and contrasts between the two counties of Dobrogea identify interesting divergent issues and a growing concern for business knowledge awareness and sustainable development strategies.
Appropriate implementation and organization of logistics activities greatly contributes to the creation of a better business environment in companies. This is reflected in increased business ...efficiency, cost rationalization, increased productivity and better overall quality. In order for a company to achieve sustainability of its business and its competitiveness, the link between the marketing logistics system and other logistics subsystems is particularly evident. Thereby, it is necessary to lead proactive management with a focus on key resources. In this paper, two novel integrated models in fuzzy form have been created. The first model includes the integration of the fuzzy Full Consistency Method (fuzzy FUCOM) and the fuzzy Evaluation based on Distance from Average Solution (EDAS) method for sorting 78 products regarding the following four criteria: quantity, unit price, annual procurement costs and demand. The second model involves the integration of the fuzzy FUCOM method and ABC analysis for the purpose of inventory sorting considering different significance of criteria. A range of values has been formed for each product category within the fuzzy FUCOM and fuzzy EDAS models, on the basis of which their sorting has been performed. The advantages and verification of the developed integrated fuzzy models have been performed through comparison with former traditional approaches. It has been determined based on an extensive sensitivity analysis that the developed models have better performance compared to the existing ones.

Industrial symbiosis (IS) is a strategy that focuses on the exchange of resources between colocated industries. Despite the benefits of IS, companies often face challenges in implementing it, ...primarily due to technical, economic, and information barriers. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the feasibility of implementing IS among Brazilian companies. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with 201 colocated companies using a previously developed instrument to assess their levels of symbiotic readiness. The findings resulted in the creation of a typology of symbiotic readiness levels, accompanied by practical recommendations for each level. In general, the surveyed companies are making progress toward implementing IS, as evidenced by their attempts to exchange waste and by‐products with other colocated industries. However, overcoming barriers related to information sharing, trust‐building, access conditions, infrastructure, and partnership formation remains challenging. This study provides valuable evidence from an emerging country regarding the readiness levels of companies to implement IS, offering insights and recommendations for managers and public authorities to promote IS. It is important to note that as companies reach mature stages of IS implementation, they can collaborate to transform the conditions of the industrial parks, ultimately fostering future industrial ecosystems.
The crisis represents a disorder that in contemporary society increasingly occurs. Crises are often the result of some earlier solutions. The situation in agricultural production in Croatia has been ...negative for years. Inadequate tax and high administrative burdens act to discourage the production process and impede the competitiveness of farmers. Furthermore, the measures taken to create added value are not enough, they can even be said to be wrong. The current crisis Covide-19 caused a disturbance on the market in terms of trends of supply and demand. The crisis period will show whether the country has an adequate strategy to overcome all the economic problems ahead. The aim of this paper was to analyze the readiness of the Republic of Croatia for crisis periods in terms of food security by analyzing the volume of agricultural production, the balance of foreign trade of agri-food products as well as the structure of total agri-food product trade. The determined trend of increasing deficits in agri-food products in foreign trade balance, particularly with EU countries implies the state's unenviable position regarding the food security indicating the need for implementation of adequate measures in the direction of the market organization and to facilitate investment in sustainable agriculture production systems.
