Mlekarne mleko predelujejo v mlečne izdelke in mlečni prah, ker kontaminacija z radioaktivnim jodom po 60 dneh izgine. Odrasli in dijaki se lahko gibljejo zunaj brez omejitev, nosečnicam in dojenčkom pa še vedno priporočajo, da so na prostem čim manj. To je, kot poudarjajo, zgolj previdnostni ukrep, ker izmerjeno sevanje ni nevarno zdravju.
