This volume brings together contributions from a wide range of international academics and practitioners. It traces innovations within classical music practice, showing how these offer divergent ...visions for its future. The interdisciplinary contributions to the volume highlight the way contrasting ideas of the future can effect change in the present. A rich balance of theoretical and practical discussion brings authority to this collection, which lays the foundations for timely responses to challenges ranging from the concept of the musical work, and the colonial values within Western musical culture, to unsustainable models of orchestral touring. The authors highlight how labour to meet the demands of particular futures for classical music might impact its creation and consumption, presenting case studies to capture the mediating roles of technology and community engagement. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of musicology and the sociology of music, as well as a general audience of practitioners, freelance musicians, music administrators and educators.

"This kaleidoscopic collection reflects on the multifaceted world of classical music as it advances through the twenty-first century. With insights drawn from leading composers, performers, ...academics, journalists, and arts administrators, special focus is placed on classical music’s defining traditions, challenges and contemporary scope. Innovative in structure and approach, the volume comprises two parts. The first provides detailed analyses of issues central to classical music in the present day, including diversity, governance, the identity and perception of classical music, and the challenges facing the achievement of financial stability in non-profit arts organizations. The second part offers case studies, from Miami to Seoul, of the innovative ways in which some arts organizations have responded to the challenges analyzed in the first part. Introductory material, as well as several of the essays, provide some preliminary thoughts about the impact of the crisis year 2020 on the world of classical music. Classical Music: Contemporary Perspectives and Challenges will be a valuable and engaging resource for all readers interested in the development of the arts and classical music, especially academics, arts administrators and organizers, and classical music practitioners and audiences."
This edition contains Four Concert Miniatures for Violin and Piano by Oskar Rieding (1846–1916), composed in Celje, shortly before World War I. Although Rieding’s compositions have been an important ...part of the violin repertoire for decades and have appeared in various reprints by major European publishers, Four Concert Miniatures for Violin and Piano has been overlooked until now. These four musically delightful miniatures form a longer, self-rounded cycle with the movements Tendresse (Tenderness), L’Aveu (Confession), Le Départ (Departure), and Désir ardent (Desire). The composer succeeded in capturing an affectionate ambience through the violin cantilena. In these distinctly lyrical character pieces, he expressed romantic feelings with his emblematic melodic style. The present edition fills the knowledge gap about this composer who was active in Celje, but also enriches the violin repertoire intended for advanced performers.
Následuje kapitola představující teorii hudební narativity (Byron Almén), tj. schopnost hudby vyjádřit dějovou trajektorii směřující z počátečního do koncového stavu na základě dynamiky konfliktu a rozuzlení. V této souvislosti je diskutována relevance novodobých přístupů ke studiu hudební formy (William Caplin, James Hepokoski a Warren Darcy) a otázka možností a limitů hudební narativity v hudbě po roce 1900, v níž jsou často zpochybňovány konvenční syntaktické principy (tonalita, forma, motivicko-tematická práce apod.). V závěru se autor vrací k tezím Lawrence Kramera, zaujímá vlastní stanovisko k opozici sémiotických a hermeneutických přístupů a akcentuje etické problémy související s aktem interpretace (a desinterpretace).
According to its own website, "Acta Musicologica" publishes "articles on musicological research of international importance." This goal certainly presentes a challenge for any journal and its ...editors. Hellmut Federhofer took over the position of editor general of Acta in 1962 and held it until 1986. Both sides of his correspondence pertaining to Acta have been preserved almost completely in the Mainz University Archive and currently being made accessible. Especially striking is the crisis of the International Musicological Society (IMS) and thus also of Acta in the 1970s. As early as 1971, the society had to seriously consider discontinuing Acta due to excessive printing costs. THe IMS decided to conduct a member survey, whose more than 300 responses are preserved in their entirety. It showed a clear majority in favor of keeping the journal in its traditional form. The Board of Directors continued to demand hard-to-obtain research reports on a large scale, while Federhofer and his US-American colleagues on the so called :ACTS-Committee," George Buelow, struggled not only to obtain contributions, but also over Acta's external appearance and content - in short, over Acta's identity as a "Western" and musicological journal in the midst of the Cold War and during an expansion of the discipline. On the basis of the letters evaluated here for the first time, this difficult period in the history of Acta can be traced. The evaluation of the survey on the preservation of Acta and Federhofer's correspondence also offers a revealing insight into the opinions of a broad section of the international musicological community, not only on the role of the IMS and its publication organ, but also on the overall state of the discipline of musicology.
In the previous articles of this series, we have discussed the development of musical scales particularly that of the hepta-tonic scale which forms the basis of Western classical music today. In this ...last article, we take a look at the basic structure of scales used in Indian classical music and how different ragas are generated through the simple process of scale shifting.
Introduction During slow-wave sleep, episodic memories are reactivated and consolidated. Using the targeted memory reactivation (TMR) technique, we can facilitate this memory consolidation process by ...presenting the sensory stimuli that were paired with the episodic memories during slow-wave sleep. Several studies have shown the effectiveness of TMR in learning word lists; however, the field lacks data on whether TMR facilitates the learning of classroom materials or whether such effects are long-lasting. Methods Fifty college students (mean age=21.16±2.77, 70% female) completed a college-level microeconomics lecture while listening to classical music. After the lecture, when participants entered slow-wave sleep, we randomly assigned them to TMR (replay the identical classical music) or control (white noise) conditions. The next morning, all participants completed a microeconomics test which contained questions that they were trained to solve (trained questions) and questions that required application of learned principles (novel questions). Approximately nine months later, 31 participants completed a similar follow-up microeconomics test. Results We excluded participants who discontinued the study, experienced protocol deviations, or did not have music/white noise played during slow wave sleep (N=41 remaining). Prior to randomization, the two groups performed similarly during the lecture (control: 84.85±9.50%, TMR: 85.53±13.28%, p=.85). Importantly, the next morning, the TMR group outperformed the control group on the trained questions (control: 58.33±29.39%, TMR: 72.22±27.09%, p=.13) and novel questions (control: 28.79±26.93%, TMR: 47.37±31.83%, p=.05). This immediate benefit of TMR was not significantly sustained at the nine month follow-up for trained questions (control: 34.82±23.24%, TMR: 32.41±23.79%, p=.79) or novel questions (control: 11.11±11.88%, TMR: 22.22±26.80%, p=.20). Conclusion The benefits of slow-wave based TMR translate to complex, ecologically-valid educational learning materials. This benefit included application of learned principles to solve novel problems, which is key to academic success. However, because the effects of a single TMR session are short-lived, future research should test whether multiple sessions of TMR facilitates long-term learning outcomes in classroom settings. PAUL GILSON (1865-1942), born and raised in Brussels, grew into a valued artist during the fin de siècle. He was and is known as an erudite composer, orchestrator, theoretician, critic, musicographer ...and educator. A prestigious Prix de Rome (1889) and his symphonic work La Mer (1892) made him known far beyond the national borders. Because of his remarkable commitment to wind music, and that of amateur orchestras in particular, we still remember Gilson today as the Father of Belgian wind music. Gilson's extremely versatile artistry resonated with numerous international trends. He closely followed current musical life at home and abroad and reported extensively in newspapers, magazines and radio broadcasts. At the conservatories of Brussels and Antwerp and as a private teacher, he managed to stimulate and sustainably influence a new generation of composers and musicians. That pedagogical passion also challenged Gilson to bundle his sharp insights into theoretical tracts. All of these facets of Gilson's life and work are the focus of this book, with a particular focus on his national and international importance. From his life to his correspondence with Russians, from his elaborate theories to his music for wind orchestras, opera music and compositions for horn and saxophone: the authors of this volume provide an in-depth and extensive insight into the character of Paul Gilson.
First-person interviews were conducted virtually on Zoom and recorded on Otter.ai. Participants were recruited at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center through hospital employee messaging. ......music that lacked these attributes was reported to have a negative impact on individual focus and wellbeing, as well as team efficiency, communication, and cohesion (Table 1). Nurse I will give one instance of like, one example, we occasionally will have surgeons from, like different parts of the hospital come over, you know, like, for collaborative procedure or something like that.
