We investigate the impact of trilemma energy balance and clean energy transitions on economic expansion and environmental sustainability while moderating the role of clean energy and natural ...resources rents of the three trilemma leaders from 1990 to 2016. Through this study, we have developed a comprehensive empirical analysis, applied advanced econometric methodologies. Westerlund's panel co-integration suggests long-run relationships within the variables. Our long-run random effect generalized least squares (GLS), generalized least square mixed effect models (GLMM), and robust correlated panel corrected standard errors (PCSEs) findings indicate trilemma energy balance, clean energy transition, and natural resource depletion enhance economic growth while clean energy discourages this growth. Moreover, trilemma energy balance, clean energy transitions, and clean energy improve while natural resources depletion deteriorates environmental sustainability in the trilemma energy leadership. Increasing the trilemma energy balance by 1% boosts economic growth by 0.3874223%. By increasing the trilemma energy balance by 1%, the ecological footprint is reduced by −0.5901441%. A 1% acceleration in the clean energy transitions boosts economic growth by 0.1208461%. By accelerating the transition to clean energy by 1%, the environmental footprint would decrease by 0.0273685%. Crucial policy implications and study limitations are discussed.

Motivated by lack of empirical research on volatility linkages among clean-energy stock markets and fossil fuel markets during the recent Covid-19 pandemic, the study examines the volatility ...connectedness network among clean-energy stocks and fossil fuels such as crude WTI, natural gas, gas oil, and fuel oil. In addition, we also compare the influence of financial crises such as the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), oil crisis, and Covid-19 pandemic crisis is driving the volatility connectedness network of energy markets. We apply Diebold and Yilmaz (2012) 1 time-domain and Barunik and Krehlik (Baruník and Křehlík, 2018) 2 frequency-domain approach. The empirical results uncover weak volatility connections among clean-energy stocks and fossil fuel markets. Meanwhile, we find strong volatility interconnectedness between petroleum markets. Further, the results show that most of the volatility spillovers among energy markets persist in the short-run, whereas the findings display weak volatility transmission among the sample markets in the long run. Furthermore, the findings also unveil that contagion effects between the energy markets increase in the crisis periods, intensifying the volatility interlinkages among the sample energy markets. The findings have important significance for energy policymakers and investors.

In this study, we examine the potential roles of gold and crude oil as safe-haven assets against extreme down movements in clean energy stock indices. We employ copulas on daily data from November ...21st, 2003 to March 30th, 2018 covering two clean energy stock indices, the S&P Global Clean Energy and the WilderHill Clean Energy. Instead of adopting a priori selection of the best copula function based on a single copula, we consider single and mixture copulas to better illustrate the dependence between the pairs of variables under study. We also apply parametric as well as non-parametric tail dependencies measures. Empirical results show that both crude oil and gold are no more than weak safe-haven assets for clean energy indices. However, the superiority of crude oil to gold is evidenced in case of infinitely extreme market movements. This superiority is validated for WilderHill Clean Energy Index but endorsed to gold when examined against Global Clean Energy Index, in extreme market movements.

Covalent organic frameworks are a class of extended crystalline organic materials that possess unique architectures with high surface areas and tuneable pore sizes. Since the first discovery of the ...topological frameworks in 2005, COFs have been applied as promising materials in diverse areas such as separation and purification, sensing or catalysis. Considering the need for renewable and clean energy production, many research efforts have recently focused on the application of porous materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this respect, considerable efforts have been devoted to the design and synthesis of COF-based materials for electrochemical applications, including electrodes and membranes for fuel cells, supercapacitors and batteries. This review article highlights the design principles and strategies for the synthesis of COFs with a special focus on their potential for electrochemical applications. Recently suggested hybrid COF materials or COFs with hierarchical porosity will be discussed, which can alleviate the most challenging drawback of COFs for these applications. Finally, the major challenges and future trends of COF materials in electrochemical applications are outlined.

Previous studies point to the time-variation and asymmetry in the relationship between clean energy stocks and crude oil markets, but there is a lack of evidence on the return spillovers between ...clean/green assets and dirty energy assets (crude oil and energy ETF) in lower and upper quantiles, and their potential drivers. To address these gaps, we apply quantile-based estimators to measure return connectedness at left and right tails of the conditional distribution of return shocks. We find that the average level of return connectedness estimated at the mean/median is 29%, whereas it reaches 65% when estimated at the left and right tails. Thus, return connectedness across clean energy stocks, green bonds, crude oil, and energy ETF is larger at both left and right tails, implying that the unsuitability of applying mean-based connectedness measures. Furthermore, we show that return connectedness measures vary with time, but they are less volatile in the tails. Notably, return connectedness differs between periods of extreme negative returns and periods of extreme negative returns, suggesting an asymmetric behaviour. An analysis of the drivers of the return connectedness shows the importance of macroeconomic conditions, especially at middle and lower quantiles. US dollar has a positive impact in all cases, whereas the crude oil market uncertainty intensifies the return spillovers at the lower quantile.
