Although big data analytics (BDA) is considered the next “frontier” in data science by creating potential business opportunities, the way to extract those opportunities is unclear. This paper aims to ...understand the antecedents of BDA value at a firm level. The authors performed a study using a mixed methodology approach. First, by carrying out a Delphi study to explore and rank the antecedents affecting the creation of BDA value. Based on the Delphi results, we propose an empirically validated model supported by a survey conducted on 175 European firms to explain the antecedents of BDA sustained value. The results show that the proposed model explains 62% of BDA sustained value at the firm level, where the most critical contributor is BDA use. We provide directions for managers to support their decisions on BDA strategy definition and refinement. For academics, we extend BDA value literature and outline some potential research opportunities.
Research summary: We use a novel theoretical framework to synthesize ostensibly disparate streams of nonmarket strategy research. We argue that faced with weak institutions, firms can create and ...appropriate value by either adapting to, augmenting, or transforming the existing institutional environment, and can do so either independently or in collaboration with others. We use the resulting typology of six distinct nonmarket strategies to provide an integrative review of nonmarket strategy research. We then extend this framework to examine the choice between nonmarket strategies, arguing that this choice depends upon whether the existing institutional environment is incomplete or captured, and discussing other drivers of nonmarket strategy choice, the relationship between these strategies, and their social impact, so as to provide an agenda for future research. Managerial summary: The pursuit of competitive advantage often requires firms to operate in contexts where existing rules and regulations provide inadequate protection. Disruptive technologies open up new opportunities for value creation, but it takes years before appropriate regulations are introduced. Economic reforms open up new markets, but these are often regulated to favor incumbents and politically connected insiders. In such environments, managers must decide whether to adapt their strategies to the existing institutional environment, devote resources to improve it, or try to transform it altogether. In this article, we develop an integrative theoretical framework that connects and synthesizes research examining each of these options, and offers some preliminary thoughts on how managers may choose among these different approaches.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, environmental protection and digital supply chains have increasingly garnered attention. As firms transition to green practices, how to achieve competitive ...advantage by reducing environmental costs has become one of the key concerns for many business managers. This study aims to examine how supplier and customer integration affect a firm’s environmental cost performance while considering the moderating effect of digital transformation. Following a survey conducted by a professional research agency on 800 Chinese manufacturing firms specializing in green products, the research model was tested using structural equation modeling and hierarchical regression analysis. The results indicate a significant positive relationship between both supplier integration and customer integration with a firm’s environmental cost performance. Additionally, positive digital transformation reinforces the relationship between supplier integration and customer integration. However, there are limitations due to the study’s background, scope, and sample size. This study underscores the impact of supplier integration and customer integration on a firm’s environmental cost performance, as well as the crucial moderating role of digital transformation. It contributes to the growing literature on sustainable supply chain management and provides valuable insights for relevant practitioners.
The current investigation seeks to investigate the relationship between digital innovations and the sustainability perspectives of logistics operations. Despite the advancement of technologies for ...sustainable goals, it is evident that the importance of digital innovation is increasing as a means of enhancing sustainable operations. Current research is examining the determinants of digital innovation in small logistics firms. A new theoretical framework is developed based on technology adoption, technology integration, and sustainable operations by following the diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory. For this study, data were collected from 540 small logistical firms in China. The covariance-based structural equation modeling technique was used to test the proposed hypothesis. The results from the analysis indicate that technology adoption positively affects the environmental perspectives with coefficients = 0.293, social perspectives with coefficients = 0.461, and economical perspectives with coefficients = 0.461 of sustainable operations. Similarly, technology integration positively affects the environmental perspectives with coefficients = 0.512, social perspectives with coefficients = 0.347, and economical perspectives with coefficients = 0.415 of sustainable operations. In conclusion, the implementation of digital technology for innovation can help firms improve their logistical operations in terms of sustainability, which will deliver a robust business improvement according to this research.
The concept of business models has reached global impact, both for company's competitive success and in management science. Its application by authors from diverse areas has led to a previously very ...heterogeneous comprehension of the concept. Yet, by means of investigating its origin and theoretical development, we state a recently converging business model view. Further, based on analyzing business model definitions, perspectives and components in the literature, we newly define the concept and portray its essential components in an integrated framework. Finally, the compilation of the current state of business model research yields the article's main findings. In this regard, via database search we quantitatively identify 681 peer-reviewed articles. Further, we qualitatively analyze them according to individual research areas that we adopt from an appropriate heuristic frame of reference. In this way, we identify four essential research foci: innovation, change & evolution, performance & controlling and design. In triangulation with assessing future research perspectives through a survey of twenty-one international experts, they also consider the areas of innovation, change & evolution, and design to be significant for the future development of the business model research field.
This study explores the influence of digital leadership (DL) on sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) in tourism and hospitality businesses, focusing on green absorptive capability (GAC) and ...eco-innovation (EI) as mediators. This study focused on middle-line management in travel agencies and hotels in Saudi Arabia. A total of 323 valid responses were collected and analyzed using WarpPLS 7.0, a PLS-SEM analysis tool. DL positively affected SCA, GAC, and EI. In addition, SCA was positively impacted by GAC and EI. Furthermore, this study found that GAC and EI significantly mediated the DL→SCA relationship. This study enhances the Dynamic Capabilities Theory, offering valuable insights for tourism and hospitality managers to utilize digital strategies and environmental initiatives for eco-conscious market competitiveness.

In the extant organizational, management, and strategy literatures there are now frequent calls for microfoundations. However, there is little consensus on what microfoundations are and what they are ...not. In this paper we first (briefly) review the history of the microfoundations discussion and then discuss what microfoundations are and are not. We highlight four misconceptions or "half-truths" about microfoundations: (1) that microfoundations are psychology, human resources, or micro-organizational behavior, (2) that borrowed concepts constitute microfoundations, (3) that microfoundations lead to an infinite regress, and (4) that microfoundations deny the role of structure and institutions. We discuss both the partial truths and the misconceptions associated with the above understandings of microfoundations, and we argue that questions of social aggregation and emergence need to be center stage in any discussion of microfoundations. We link our arguments about microfoundations and aggregation with closely related calls for new areas of research, such as "behavioral strategy" and the domain of multilevel human capital research. We discuss various forms of social aggregation and also highlight associated opportunities for future research, with a specific focus on the origins of capabilities and competitive advantage.
Innovation and technology have been one of the challenging factors, bringing about uncertain business circumstances. Many business sectors have currently focused on competitiveness by improving a ...production process and other related operations. This research aims to study the roles of knowledge-oriented leadership and human resource development on a sustainable competitive advantage of an organization using data from employees in the high technology and innovation organizations of Thailand. These sample organizations are called the New S-Curve industries under the definition of the “Thailand 4.0 Model”. The Structural Equation Modeling was employed to analyze the effects. The results showed that knowledge-oriented leadership directly affected the sustainable competitive advantage, where human resource development did not have a significant direct effect on the sustainable competitive advantage. Moreover, both knowledge-oriented leadership and human resource development indirectly affected the sustainable competitive advantage through organizational innovation's component factors.
This study aims to analyze and determine the magnitude of the influence of information technology capabilities, leadership commitment, competitive advantage and sustainable value creation. This study ...uses descriptive and causal-explanatory methods with a quantitative approach. The sampling method used is the probability sampling approach (the census). Data analysis used is the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach using primary data. The results of the study state that IT Capability has a significant positive effect on Sustainability Value Creation (SVC) and Corporate Competitive Advantage (CCA). The Top Management Commitment variable positively and significantly affects Sustainability Value Creation but does not affect CCA. The SVC variable influences CCA. The results of the Indirect Effect test state that IT Capability influences CCA through SVC. Meanwhile, Top Management Commitment influences CCA through SVC. Additional variables may have other moderating and mediating effects on the mediating role of sustainable value creation. This research contributes to knowledge development (basic research) and applicative problem solving (applied research) by Islamic banking in Indonesia. The results of this study can be a premise for subsequent researchers and can add to the limitations of the literature. This research focused on the research locus, namely Islamic banking throughout Indonesia. It is confirmed that research topics with variables used in this research have never been studied at the locus of Islamic banking before.
The term “business model” has been misinterpreted and misused over the years, and has consequently been inadequately understood and applied by both practitioners and scholars. It has been frequently ...confused with other popular terms in the management literature such as strategy, business concept, revenue model, economic model, or even business process modeling.
This paper aims to contribute to the clarification of the meaning and use of the business model image, as well as to theorize on its logical underpinnings that we find rooted in the resource-based view and in the transaction cost economics. This paper identifies new avenues for further research, such as the investigation of path dependency in a business model and the meaning of business model innovation.
