In this article, I propose to study two novels that articulate a non-dualist and decolonial socio-environmental discourse. The aim will be to understand the contributions of contemporary fiction to a ...way of thinking the global South that defends the need to redefine the categories for understanding the communities of the pluriverse, both human and non-human, and the territories they inhabit. Within the framework of literary fiction, narrative devices emerge that, in addition to formulating a critical discourse of the Anthropocene’s regime of planetary depredation, seek to stage collectives and struggling territorialities in the globalized Capitalocene. Based on the reading of two novels, Os transparentes (2012), by Angolan writer Ondjaki, and By the Rivers of Babylon (2017), by Jamaican Kei Miller, we will analyze particular ethical and aesthetic, as well as political and ontological, implications of this ecoliterature. The ultimate goal is to understand how these pre-apocalyptic investigative fictions visibilize and document ecologies and ontologies threatened with extinction.
Considering the imagological conceptions of the Other by Daniel-Henri Pageau and Gordana Đerić, this text analyses the role of literature in the deconstruction of stereo¬types that circulate in ...communication between Balkan neighbours. In the focus of our interpretation are three novels of contemporary Macedonian literature (Luan Starova’s Balkanvavilonci, Dragi Mihajlovski’s Mojot Skenderbej and Blazhe Minevski’s Nishan), which are paradigmatic in two ways: 1. they refer to historical events and figures, thus confirming that history is the basic mechanism for the argumentation of stereotypical images; 2. they depict processes of destereotyping both thematically and structurally, but also by their appearance in a particular sociohistorical context, with the aim of promoting supranational, universal, human, civilizational, and cultural values such as love, empa¬thy, forgiveness, dialogue, tolerance, education, love of books, optimism, humaneness, all of which are usually treated as originally European values. Literature, by articulating the processes of destereotyping through the narrative strategies in the works, confirms that it holds the potential to act correctively on systems where different forms of power are based on discrimination and submission.
The reviewer analyses the monograph Problematic-Thematic Units and Philosophical-Esthetical Parameters of the British Post-Postmodern Novel (Kyiv, 2020) written by Dmytro Drozdovskyi, a Ukrainian ...scholar from Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, member of The European Society for the Study of English (Bulgarian branch). In the monograph, the author has outlined the theory of the post-postmodern novel based on the analysis of the key novels of contemporary British fiction (David Mitchell, Ian McEwan, Sarah waters, Mark Haddon, etc.). The review states that the Ukrainian scholar has developed the theory proposed by Fredric Jameson regarding the post-postmodern features of Cloud Atlas and also discusses the concept of meta-modernity as one of the sections in the post-postmodern literary paradigm in the UK. Drozdovskyi argues that meta-modernism cannot be the only term that explains all the peculiarities of contemporary British fiction, which also cannot be outlined as meta-modern but as post-postmodern. The scholar provides a new theory of the novel based on the exploitation of real and unreal historical facts and imagined alternative histories and multifaceted realities. Furthermore, the reviewer pays attention to the contribution this monograph has for world literary studies spotlighting the theory of literary meta-genre patterns, as Drozdovskyi provides a theory according to which literary periods can be divided into those in which the carnival is the dominant meta-genre pattern (like postmodernism) and those that exploit the mystery as the meta-genre pattern (post-postmodernism). The reviewer analyses the key thematic units explained by Drozdovskyi as the key ones that determine the semiosphere of the contemporary British novel (post-metaphysical and post-positivist thinking of the characters, medicalisation of the humanitarian discourse, and the representation of the temporal unity of different realities). The scholar also states that the post-postmodern British novel exploits the findings of German Romanticism and Kant’s philosophy.
This article studies the configuration of the family in two recent Argentine novels, La familia by Gustavo Ferreyra and El absoluto by Daniel Guebel. Starting from a recognition of the attributes ...that the family had in the tradition of the novel, this text examines the values that these two novels built around genealogy, lineage and kinship. At the same time, the article study the articulations with the concept of gender in relationship with two fictions not clearly related to this contemporary pattern of reading and fiction production. Finally, this article analyzes the temporal variables, an aspect that is linked to the time allotted to the family through lineage and reproduction. The extensive, profuse and unconventional configuration of this novels indicates a divergence with respect to this assignment and the possibility of other forms and binders of the family.
Abstract In contemporaneity, realism as a narrative form and approach is being quite commented on by the theory and the critics. In the Brazilian context, some specialized critics, when trying to delimit the contemporary, highlight realism in direct relation to the super exposition of violence, seen as one of the main themes of today. In that sense, expressions such as “brutalist” (BOSI, 2002) and “fierce realism” (CANDIDO, 2011), for example, brush the analyses of works that conjugate violence and realism. However, despite the profusion of narratives that are constructed upon this binomial, the proposition of this work is not to associate realism with marginality or violence. Through the reading of the novel Crow Blue, by Adriana Lisboa, published in 2010, we intend to work with the experience of what Schøllhammer identifies as “affective realism” (2002, 2004, 2011, 2013).
Abstract This article examines five Colombian narrative works published between 2004 and 2007, and it finds the topic of memory as a strong thematic focus and an aesthetic challenge. How does literary fiction deal with the reconstruction of a collective past? How is it possible to connect private and public life while remaking one’s biography or someone else’s? How can we update the literary inquiries about memory and the reconstruction of (auto) biography in Colombian contemporary narrative? These questions guide the discussion on narrative works which are completely different regarding the type of narrator, historical context and fictional pact that they posit.

This article offers a critical analysis of financialisation as a conceptual category for making sense of contemporary American fiction. Examining the rise of the figure of the creative entrepreneur ...as well as a range of contemporary fiction, the author argues that, to make sense of these developments and texts, we need to attend to how they reproduce the logic of finance, and in particular that of the financial instrument of the derivative. Like the financial derivative, the novels the author examines are future-oriented: they calculate and speculate on the ways they feed forward into new iterations and media. In addition, the texts and their authors are embedded within entrepreneurial networks within which different fields and competencies are brought into relation with one another. Through these conjunctures, the logic of finance becomes that of the contemporary novel.
Exile serves as a metaphor to better grasp the major aspects underlying translation as well as the discourses and theories on translation. The Portuguese translation of Romain Gary’ novel, taken as a ...text in exile, illustrates our previous remarks.
This article first reviews the main theoretical contributions to the subject of the narrative character. It then presents a new theoretical proposal that differentiates two roles (actants / actors) ...and facets (individuals / types) within the category of character in relation to the three levels of the narrative text (story-function, plot-action and narrative discourse). Finally, this theoretical proposal is subsequently verified trough the analysis of the functioning of the narrative characters in Valle-Inclán’s Tirano Banderas.
