Without doubt, one of the most outstanding piece of the goliard poetry is the anonymous poem which nowadays become known as Phyllis et Flora (Altercatio Phyllidis et Florae). It was preserved to us ...in many manuscripts, whose each one contains parts of diff erent length of this poem. One of these copies especially diff ers from any of others: it preserves a complete poem that begins with the eight initial stanzas of the original poem, and continues with seven new-composed stanzas until its end. After the discovery of this manuscript, it become part of the tradition of the poem although it was considered just as a very corrupt witness of the poem’s fi rst eight stanzas. However, in the recent past, thanks to a lucky occasion, it was discovered a second copy of this variant poem, transcribed at the same period as the already known one. Th e new discovery fundamentally changes our relation to the variant: the new copy has made it obvious, that this is not a peculiar composition of the fantasy of its scribe, but a self-suffi cient late variant of the original poem, which had been supposedly more widespread, than its traces testify. Not only the radical alteration of its length, but – due to its late construction – that of its content and thought is also remarkable.
The article reveals the mechanisms allowing the author’s intention to destruct the structural-content organization of speech genres and influence the formation and perception of an artistic ...narrative. The research gives ground to outline a set of devices to make the communicative sense of artistic narratives odd, which is explained by the author’s creation of „unnatural” ontology of the narrated world; to outline various ways of semantic destruction of speech acts, and intentional breaches of the pragmatic conditions of the effective speech-genre structures creation and functioning. The result of these devices use is the
formation of the ontological, perceptional, behavioural, mental and some other types of textual (discursive, narrative) absurd. Mechanisms of creating intentional and/or nonintentional „unnatural” speech acts as constituents of artistic narratives are active sources of forming unusual communicative senses of aesthetic nature.
In the paper there are analysed five British and German incongruent civil law terms. German terms appear in the German act of law called Bürgerlicher Gesetzbuch. British terms name the terms ...characteristic of each of the three separate legal systems: of England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. All terms constitute legal terms according to the definition by Morawski. The research problem is to verify whether the published typology of translation methods used in the Polish-English translation of succession and family law terms (which are civil law terms) encompasses translation methods applied when translating civil terms from German into English. The term translation method is defined according to Hejwowski. In order to determine the translation methods applied while producing equivalents, the definitions of the source terms and the equivalents in question are analysed. Furthermore, the appearance of the suggested equivalents in the sources of the British law as well as the corpora of the English language is verified. Finally, having examined the translation methods employed, it is concluded that the equivalents suggested have been formed with the application of as many as 4 different methods listed in the abovementioned classification. Moreover, the Ukrainian terms denoting the legal institutions discussed have been analysed compared to the Polish terms. With regard to the translation of the terms under analysis from Ukrainian into English two different methods have been employed.
At a time when Ukraine, even with some lag behind other European countries, is beginning to finally lose its traditional folklore, its practical museification is a crucial task. One of the most ...important tasks of this process is to explain the preserved and reconstruct forgotten rites in their song context. Kupala needs an important place among the urgent issues of such an understanding. The polysemy of this word itself testifies both to its antiquity and to the gradual path to the loss of some meanings. The analysis of similar holidays among the peoples of Europe shows that the Ukrainian holiday with this name has absorbed many meanings that could belong to other calendar holidays or were transferred from Ukraine and occasionally adapted to other dates or occasions. The material for the analysis were only texts that have a direct mention of the dome in its various forms. The Ukrainian token Kupala has several meanings: the name of the holiday, a ceremonial tree, a pile of bushes for the Kupala hearth, Kupala songs are called kupala in the far northwest. The lyrics associate the word with such ceremonial content as weaving wreaths, lighting a bonfire by a young woman and keeping it for three days, jumping over a fire, girls fighting for boys, orgiastic actions of young people („purchase sin”) and even natural punishment for it by abdominal pain, witchcraft is often mentioned.
The article is an attempt to decode a literary text to identify an individual psychological content in it. On the basis of philological and psychological analysis it is proved that Shevchenko’s ...linguistic identity is characterized by two types of accentuation – emotive and affective-exalted. At the level of the text it is seen in the high frequency of emotions: tears, crying, in the repetition of verbal formulas containing motivational and volitional qualities, as well as in a peculiar syntactic and intonational phrase organization.
The Ukrainian-Russian diglossia led to the appearance of mixed speech, called surzhyk, in Ukrainian territories controlled by the Russian Empire. As a speech variant along with the dialects, surzhyk ...developed primarily in the speech of peasants and spread further in the newly built cities of Central, Eastern and Southern Ukraine from the end of the18th century. According to the language contact theory, surzhyk is a subcode for Ukrainian and Russian common language codes. At the same time, a number of political decisions during the Russian Tsardom and the Soviet empire led to the expansion of its functioning, often to a single language code. In the late 20th century, after the publication of researches on surzhyk, the emphasis was mainly on its negative impact on the national extension of the Ukrainian language. Thirty years of studying this phenomenon already shows the appearance of many linguistic studies, with a dominant of studies that use the descriptive analysis method. This research aims to focus on those opinions and approaches in recent research on surzhyk, which caused a certain resonance in linguistics and which have been continued. Also in this text, we present a vision of further perspective of (socio)linguistic analysis of mixed speech, based on the results of our own sociological survey.
Emotion linguistics is a new trend in philology which develops rapidly. Language tools of revealing specific aspects of a child’s emotional world in literary tests are analyzed in the paper, in ...particular the specificity of experiencing a fear emotion. Linguists who study the ways of a language expression of emotions frequently refer to artistic texts. However, the specificity of emotion expression and its verbal denotation depending on the age peculiarities of man is not a sufficiently studied phenomenon. The materials for the research are the literary texts created by the Ukrainian writers at different times, in which children are the main characters (works of P. Myrnyi, M. Kotsiubynskyi, І. Franko, B. Lepkyi, М. Stelmakh, Ye. Hutsalo, М. Matios). The value of the literary texts consists in the fact that they have generally reliable information about a child’s psycho-emotional world since usually children’s images are autobiographical and the emotion description is in most cases the expression of psychical feelings of the authors of the texts. There are several ways to express a child’s fear emotions: a lexical nomination of emotion and emotion descriptors; a description of a non-verbal behavior of a child, a description of a body reaction to emotion.
The paper discusses the principle of anthropocentrism and nation-centrism in relation to the presentation of the theoretical foundations of Ukrainian linguistic historiography, based on national ...traditions and new approaches to the principles of describing the history of linguistics. It is significant for reconsidering Ukrainian linguistic philosophy and philosophy of science in general. In modern Ukrainian linguistics, traditional genres of historiography are updated (index, biobibliography, textbook, monographs, scientific articles, etc.) on the history of Ukrainian linguistics in general, research centers and schools in particular, descriptions of achievements in certain fields of the Ukrainian linguistic studies, etc.) and new hybrid genres (metabibliographic manuals, bibliography of individual journals, textbooks in some scientific fields, dictionaries of personalities, etc.). In the modern scientific space the formation and development of critical-respecting discourse as well as linguistics of personalities can be observed.
