This open access book compares the experiences of large-scale military procurement in Canada and Australia. Focusing on the recent frigate and jet-fighter programmes, it demonstrates how delays ...suffered in delivering weapons systems and platforms in these countries have been caused by misalignments between the strategic requirements set out by the armed forces and government defence policies. By bringing the insights of public management and administration to those of defence studies, the book presents policy options that will help improve the nature of future large-project military procurement. It will appeal to scholars and students of public administration, public management, and defence studies, as well as practitioners and policymakers.
2023 marked the 50th anniversary of Peace Studies – a discipline which has been closely connected with the Quaker community – at Bradford. Peace Studies as an academic centre of teaching and research ...at Bradford University was set up in 1973, starting its first postgraduate course in 1974 and welcoming its first undergraduate students the following year. It would not have been established without the determination of a group of Quakers to see such a centre in a UK university, and this Research Note looks primarily at the first 25 years and how the department came about and survived the many internal and external challenges. It also includes some personal reflections, as I joined the department 45 years ago and have retained a close connection through to the present.

This textbook offers an accessible introduction to the historical, technical and strategic context of global cyber conflict. The second edition has been revised and updated throughout, with three new ...chapters.
Cyber warfare involves issues of doctrine, strategy, policy, international relations (IR) and operational practice associated with computer network attack, computer network exploitation and computer network defense. Specifically, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the following several key issue areas:
The historical context of the emergence and evolution of cyber warfare, including the basic characteristics and methods of computer network attack, exploitation and defense;
An interdisciplinary set of theoretical perspectives on conflict in the digital age from the point of view of the fields of IR, security studies, psychology and science, technology and society (STS) studies;
Current national perspectives, policies, doctrines and strategies relevant to cyber warfare;
An examination of key challenges in international law, norm development and deterrence; and
The role of emerging information technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing in shaping the dynamics of global cyber conflict.
This textbook will be essential reading for students of cybersecurity/cyber conflict and information warfare, and highly recommended for students of intelligence studies, security and strategic studies, defense policy and IR in general.

Nation-building modeling is an important field given the increasing number of candidate nations and the limited resources available. In this paper, we present a modeling methodology and a system of ...differential equations model to investigate the dynamics of nation-building. The methodology is based on solving inverse problems, much like Lanchester equations, and provides measures of merit to evaluate nation-building operations. An application is derived for Operation Iraqi Freedom to demonstrate the utility as well as effects of various alternate strategies, using differing applications of national power. This modeling approach is data driven and offers a significant, novel capability when analyzing and planning for future nation-building scenarios.
