This study on Phuan first introduces the areas of Laos investigated in Xiengkhouang, Xaysômboun, and Bolikhamxay provinces. A historical account of Xiengkhouang, regarded as the Phuan homeland, is ...provided. The presentation of the linguistic literature discusses the research on Phuan in Thailand and the lesser-known research on Phuan in Laos. The fifteen tone diagrams for Phuan of this study, which are based on recordings made in thirteen locations, support a tone pattern with a 1-234 split in A and C columns of Gedney’s tone diagram, a 123-4 split in B, DL, and DS columns, and a B-DL quasi-coalescence. Two tone diagrams, for Tai Dam and Tai Daeng lects of Muong Kham (Xiengkhouang), are given for comparison. Other issues concerning the Phuan lects considered include: the reflex /-ɤː/ of Proto-Tai *əï, *eï/ɛï, *oï; diphthongs /iə/, /ɯə/, /uə/; reflexes of DL syllables *CV:k; the initial consonant /h-/ instead of /kh -/; and specific lexical items.
This book focuses on contemporary sociolinguistic approaches to Spanish dialectology. Each of the authors draws on key issues of contemporary sociolinguistics, combining theoretical approaches with ...empirical data collection. Overall, these chapters address topics concerning language variation and change, sound production and perception, contact linguistics, language teaching, language policy, and ideologies. The authors urge us, as linguists, to take a stand on important issues and to continue applying theory to praxis so as to advance the frontiers of research in the field. This edited volume in honor of Professor Terrell A. Morgan is a means of celebrating an amazing friend, advisor, and human being, who has dedicated his career to teaching graduate and undergraduate students, performed key research in the field, and helped to further pedagogy in the classroom through his textbooks, seminars and websites.
In this monograph, Roberta Morano re-examines one of the foundational works of the Omani Arabic dialectology field, Carl Reinhardt’s Ein arabischer Dialekt gesprochen in ‘Oman und Zanzibar (1894). ...This German-authored work was prolific in shaping our knowledge of Omani Arabic during the twentieth century, until the 1980s when more recent linguistic studies on the Arabic varieties spoken in Oman began to appear. Motivated by an urgent need to expand and reinforce our understanding of Omani Arabic, the book provides a linguistic analysis of the Omani vernacular spoken in the al-ʿAwābī district (northern Oman), based on the speech of fifteen informants recruited throughout the area. It also provides a comparative analysis of the new data with that collected by Carl Reinhardt in 1894. This comparison enables the reader to appreciate the extent of diachronic linguistic variation in the region, and also sheds light on the threats that such variation poses to Omani-specific linguistic features. Organised in four chapters, the book presents a sociolinguistic analysis of the Omani linguistic landscape followed by an examination of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the al-ʿAwābī vernacular. Each chapter contains primary data collected by the author in situ compared, when applicable, with Carl Reinhardt’s materials. The appendix includes two sample texts extrapolated from the recordings, fourteen proverbs and one traditional song. This study will be of interest to those working in the fields of Omani Arabic, historical and comparative linguistics, translation and interpretation, or those with an interest in how languages develop over time.
This paper provides a historical overview of Basque dialect classifications. Although there have been different approaches to the classification of Basque dialects, there are five studies that have ...focused on the whole Basque territory. Bonaparte (1869) distinguished eight dialects, based on comparative linguistics. Caro Baroja (1945), on his ethnological classification, defended that the Basque dialect boundaries coincide with the areas that in Roman Age were occupied by different ethnic groups. Zuazo (1998), based on traditional dialectology, distinguished five dialects, four interdialect transition zones and three intradialect transition zones. Aurrekoetxea et al. (2017) distinguished eight dialects based on perceptual dialectology, but three dialects and seven subdialects based on quantitative dialectology (Aurrekoetxea et al. 2019).
This study aims to identify the form of the social character of the interpersonal affect and the phonological features of the dialectology of the presenter and informants in the Talk Show Mata Najwa ...On Stage "Semua Karena Ahok". This research is a qualitative descriptive study using a functional linguistic approach. Sources of data from this study were obtained from conversations conducted by Najwa Shihab and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok). The results of the research on the Talk Show Mata Najwa on Stage episode "Semua Karena Ahok" show: 1) there are six forms of social characters with interpersonal effects, namely: trustworthiness, fairness, caring, respect, citizenship, responsibility. Positive affect could be seen with words, phrases and sentences that showed the social character of the positive interpersonal effects they have. The assessment that showed a positive character could be seen from the intensity carried out by Najwa and Ahok. Najwa Shihab and Ahok's intensity is often proven by the many conversations shown. 2) there are dialects which were influenced by regional languages based on dialectological phonological characteristics, among others: Seribu: vowel phoneme /i/ becomes e= Serebu. Ribu: vowel phoneme /i/ becomes e= Rebu. Ramai: vowel phoneme /a/ becomes e and release of consonant phonemes= Rame. Kita: vowel phoneme /i/ becomes e= Kite. Iya: vowel phoneme /i/ becomes e= Iye
In this study, the usage of the present tense suffix, which is one of the criteria frequently used by dialectological researchers in the determination and classification of dialect areas, was ...evaluated in Gagauz Turkic and the main dialect areas and sub-dialect groups of Gagauz Turkic were classified according to this criterion. In order to obtain data on the usage patterns of the present tense suffix based on the classification, compilations were made from the Gagauzia Autonomous Region of the Republic of Moldova, Odessa of Ukraine, Evros of Greece, Varna and Dobrich regions of Northeastern Bulgaria, where Gagauz Turks, who continue to exist in different dialectal areas today, live intensively, source texts were created with the transcription technique based on the compilations, and these texts were deciphered and the compiled dialectal materials were examined in detail. Based on the data obtained as a result of the language analyses, the findings were interpreted, all dialect regions were evaluated independently, the place of these dialect regions within the dialects of Gagauz Turkic was determined according to the usage forms of the present tense suffix, and in cases where the present tense suffix was not sufficient as a criterion, other criteria were applied and the main dialect areas and sub-dialect groups of Gagauz Turkic were tried to be classified. At the end of the study, the main dialectal areas and sub-dialectal groups of Gagauz Turkic were analysed according to the use of the present tense suffix in a way that can be a source for the language atlas studies to be prepared in the future.
