Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is known to exhibit slow crystallization. Therefore, post‐process annealing is often performed, at which structure change is inevitable. In this paper, the structure ...development during annealing of PLA containing N,N′‐ethylenebis(12‐hydroxystearamide) (EBHS) is studied using extruded strands. First, EBHS, which acts as a nucleating agent, is dissolved in molten PLA, and then segregates with a fibrous shape during cooling. Next, the PLA containing EBHS is extruded, which causes EBHS fibers in the strand to orientate with the flow direction. When the strand is annealed at 100°C, amorphous PLA chains initially lose their orientation. Then, the chain orientation in the PLA strand develops because of transcrystallization from the surface of EBHS fibers that are aligned with the flow direction. As a result, the Hermans orientation function increases from 1.8 × 10−3 (before annealing) to 6.0 × 10−3 (after annealing). Moreover, the annealed PLA/EBHS strand shows less shrinkage (0.80 ± 0.19%) than the annealed PLA strand (2.04 ± 0.27%). The promotion of PLA chain orientation induced by the presence of aligned EBHS fibers can be used to control the structure and dimensional change of PLA products during annealing.

Although the post‐process annealing decreases the orientation of PLA amorphous chains, further annealing provides the chain orientation again by the transcrystallization of PLA from the oriented fibrous EBHS. The use of single-crystal sapphire optical fibers has been considered to extend fiber-optic sensing to the extreme temperature (>1000 °C) environments encountered in nuclear applications. However, ...before these sapphire fiber–based sensors can be deployed, their optical transmission and dimensional stability (which impacts drift of some sensors) must be characterized under representative testing conditions. Data regarding the optical transmission of sapphire following high-dose neutron irradiation at temperatures >100 °C is extremely limited. This work provides measurements of optical density (i.e., attenuation) and directional dimensional changes in bulk single-crystal sapphire materials irradiated to a fast neutron fluence of 2.4 × 1021 n/cm2 (3.5 displacements per atom) at temperatures ranging from 95 to 688 °C. Optical density measured after irradiation at 95 and 298 °C showed ultraviolet and visible absorption bands corresponding to known defect centers and temperature trends that were generally consistent with previous ex situ and in situ measurements made at much lower neutron fluence. However, optical density measured after irradiation at 688 °C was as much as two orders of magnitude higher, indicating that the fundamental mechanism for radiation-induced attenuation changes at this irradiation temperature. Additional analysis and comparison with previous works suggest that the attenuation may result from void formation, leading to increased Rayleigh scattering losses in the material and increased swelling that would also result in drift of Bragg grating-based sensors in sapphire fibers. These results pose serious questions regarding the feasibility of sapphire fiber–based sensors for high-temperature nuclear applications.
This study explores the extent to which a bilingual advantage can be observed for three tasks in an established population of fully fluent bilinguals from childhood through adulthood. Welsh-English ...simultaneous and early sequential bilinguals, as well as English monolinguals, aged 3 years through older adults, were tested on three sets of cognitive and executive function tasks. Bilinguals were Welsh-dominant, balanced, or English-dominant, with only Welsh, Welsh and English, or only English at home. Card sorting, Simon, and a metalinguistic judgment task (650, 557, and 354 participants, respectively) reveal little support for a bilingual advantage, either in relation to control or globally. Primarily there is no difference in performance across groups, but there is occasionally better performance by monolinguals or persons dominant in the language being tested, and in one case-in one condition and in one age group-lower performance by the monolinguals. The lack of evidence for a bilingual advantage in these simultaneous and early sequential bilinguals suggests the need for much closer scrutiny of what type of bilingual might demonstrate the reported effects, under what conditions, and why.
Since the start of the 'nuclear age' graphite has been employed as a moderator in around 100 nuclear reactors, and today there are still some 30 graphite-moderated reactors operating and there are ...plans for new Generation IV high-temperature reactors. Many of the graphite moderator reactors now producing power are operating beyond their original design life. Therefore in some cases, to aid the reactor operators and designers, the existing graphite irradiation databases need to be extended either to a higher temperature or higher neutron fluence. Furthermore, data are needed for the different grades of graphite that are available at present. This can either be achieved by expensive, time consuming irradiation programmes or by improving the understanding of the mechanisms and processes which lead to irradiation-induced dimensional and property changes in the graphite core components. This review looks at three of the most important graphite properties which change with exposure to irradiation, namely dimensional change, irradiation creep and thermal expansion. The behaviour of UK AGR, Magnox and an experimental grade of German reactor graphite are explored in some detail. First graphite reactor core design is briefly discussed, giving examples of typical graphite components and core arrangements. Issues related to aging graphite component and core behaviour are illustrated through examples of component internal and thermal stress generation, and issues related to whole core behaviour are also outlined. Second the manufacture and microstructure of different nuclear graphite grades are discussed, highlighting how the choice of raw materials and manufacturing technique influences the graphite properties. Third the coefficient of thermal expansion, dimensional change and irradiation creep are analysed using microstructural and averaging methods which are used to relate crystal to bulk properties by accounting for graphite crystal orientation and porosity. These techniques, which were first applied to nuclear graphite in the 1960s, are extended and discussed with the aim of trying to lend some understanding to the role the microstructural crystallite and porosity distributions play in defining the dimensional stability and properties of virgin graphite, irradiated graphite and stressed graphite.

Objectives
To review all English dental literature to assess the magnitude of dimensional changes of both the hard and soft tissues of the alveolar ridge up to 12 months following tooth extraction in humans.
Methods
An electronic MEDLINE and CENTRAL search complemented by manual searching was conducted to identify randomized controlled clinical trials and prospective cohort studies on hard and soft tissue dimensional changes after tooth extraction. Only studies reporting on undisturbed post‐extraction dimensional changes relative to a fixed reference point over a clearly stated time period were included. Assessment of the identified studies and data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers. Data collected were reported by descriptive methods. Weighted means and percentages of the dimensional changes over time were calculated where appropriate.
Results
The search provided 3954 titles and 238 s. Full text analysis was performed for 104 articles resulting in 20 studies that met the inclusion criteria. In human hard tissue, horizontal dimensional reduction (3.79 ± 0.23 mm) was more than vertical reduction (1.24 ± 0.11 mm on buccal, 0.84 ± 0.62 mm on mesial and 0.80 ± 0.71 mm on distal sites) at 6 months. Percentage vertical dimensional change was 11–22% at 6 months. Percentage horizontal dimensional change was 32% at 3 months, and 29–63% at 6–7 months. Soft tissue changes demonstrated 0.4–0.5 mm gain of thickness at 6 months on the buccal and lingual aspects. Horizontal dimensional changes of hard and soft tissue (loss of 0.1–6.1 mm) was more substantial than vertical change (loss 0.9 mm to gain 0.4 mm) during observation periods of up to 12 months, when study casts were utilized as a means of documenting the changes.
Conclusions
Human re‐entry studies showed horizontal bone loss of 29–63% and vertical bone loss of 11–22% after 6 months following tooth extraction. These studies demonstrated rapid reductions in the first 3–6 months that was followed by gradual reductions in dimensions thereafter.
Two promising reactor Generation IV designs employ nuclear graphite as their moderator and reflector. To this end, new graphite grades are being developed, which will require their suitability for ...reactor design to be established. Understanding graphite irradiation behavior, especially dimensional change, is critical when selecting a particular nuclear graphite grade. This is usually established by fast neutron irradiation experiments in a material test reactor (MTR). However, due to the limited accessibility to the MTR irradiation facility, cost, and the time required for such experiments to be carried out, the development of new nuclear graphite grades is restrictive. Here, a novel approach is proposed to enable suitable grades to be selected from a number of candidates before an MTR program is implemented by estimating the irradiation-induced dimensional change behaviors of several nuclear graphite grades based on the bending of graphite foils under ion irradiation. The method is capable of efficiently distinguishing the most dimensionally stable graphite grades in the laboratory without the need to irradiate many samples in an MTR program.

This prospective clinical study aimed to evaluate the peri-implant hard tissue dimensional change at 6 months of immediate implant placement with bone graft materials in the posterior area using ...cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Twelve dental implants were placed concurrently following tooth extraction in the posterior area and filled with xenograft particles. The CBCT images were taken immediately after surgical procedures and then at 6 months follow-up. -test or Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze the dimensional change in the vertical and horizontal direction in buccal and lingual aspects. The level of significance was set at
value = 0.05. All implants were successfully osseointegrated. At 6 months follow-up, the vertical bone change at the buccal aspect was -0.69 mm and at the lingual aspect -0.39 mm. For horizontal bone thickness, the bone dimensional changes at 0, 1, 5, and 9 mm levels from the implant platform were -0.62 mm, -0.70 mm, -0.24 mm, and -0.22 mm, respectively. A significant bone reduction was observed in all measurement levels during the 6 months after implant placement (
value < 0.05). It was noted that even with bone grafting, a decrease in bone thickness was seen following the immediate implant placement. Therefore, this technique can be an alternative method to place the implant in the posterior area.
