El presente artículo analiza y compara el empleo de documentos de archivos sobre violaciones a los derechos humanos durante la dictadura chilena (1973-1990) en la construcción del relato en el ...libro-reportaje A la sombra de los cuervos de Javier Rebolledo (2016), y en el documental Las Cruces de Teresa Arredondo y Carlos Vásquez Méndez (2019). Ambas producciones culturales abordan el caso denominado “La Masacre de Laja y San Rosendo” ocurrido en octubre de 1973, ocasión en que fueron asesinados diecinueve trabajadores por carabineros de la zona. En los hechos hubo complicidad de la empresa privada, contó con la colaboración de civiles y la acción de la justicia fue negligente al omitir antecedentes. El análisis se centra en las operaciones del archivo que ambas producciones culturales realizan, con el objetivo de construir un relato con efectos de veracidad y coherente de los hechos. Se revisa el tipo de documento de archivo, su procedencia, materialidad, exhaustividad en el uso y su función narrativa en cada una de las obras, para dar cuenta del tipo de operación que este dispositivo realiza en los distintos relatos del presente sobre un pasado en constante disputa y marcado por omisiones y la ausencia de verdad y justicia.
Nature-based tourism experiences have the potential to change the environmental knowledge, attitudes and behavior of visitors; but such experiences may be beyond the physical and/or financial reach ...of many people. To influence the conservation behavior of populations world-wide, a more accessible yet equally effective strategy is required. Using an experimental design, this study explored whether a conservation documentary about Australian marine environments, together with post-viewing support materials, prompted the adoption of conservation behaviours. Questionnaires revealed environmental knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions rose immediately after viewing the documentary. Ten weeks later, these levels were maintained or decreased slightly for those who received post-viewing support (Facebook, help sheet or both), but decreased markedly in the control group. Results are similar to those reported in wildlife tourism studies. Implications for the use of documentaries in place of nature experiences are discussed.
The author of the essay takes up the subject of characteristic Herzogian aerial shots. Understanding Werner Herzog’s documentaries as an epistemological project, she draws attention to the role of ...sky-high perspective in his search for new, “unused” images – that is, in the process which, in Herzog’s opinion, is mankind’s key task. Following researchers such as Teresa Castro, Eric Ames, Brad Prager, and Laurie Ruth Johnson, the author proves that Herzog’s aerial shots have a cognitive function and are used as a means of constructing “alien geographies”, in which real landscapes are transformed into “landscapes of the soul”. The White Diamond (2004) is placed at the centre of this discussion, being a metafilm in which Herzog comments on his own visual practices, and reveals both his motivations and the realization process, as well as the benefits of adopting the aeronautes’ perspective.
In 2021, Kenichi Watanabe & Michaël Ferrier published the screenplays for their three nuclear documentaries with Gallimard as Notre ami l'atome (2021). Ferrier said these screenplays were not simple ...publications but expansions of the material they had collected in their three films, which includes expanded interviews and photographs of the disasters. In this article, I use adaptation theory to examine Watanabe & Ferrier's film Le monde après Fukushima (2013) along with the screenplay that appeared in the 2021 publication to understand the limits and possibilities each medium affords. For instance, these documentaries were partially funded by state institutions with a vested interest in the film, its reception, and its depiction of the events, whereas literature is arguably freer to express opinions because it is not tied to certain forms of state funding. This article thus uses Jan-Noël Thon's concept of transmedial adaptation to demonstrate how both media (film and text) are complementary. Rather than simply publish the screenplay, Watanabe & Ferrier use the publication as an opportunity to share expanded commentary and photography. When the film and text are read together, they become an even more explicit critique of the nations that perpetuate the use of nuclear energy despite their demonstrated dangers.
Within the context of higher education, the disciplines of science and filmmaking appear disparate, but the importance of storytelling as an integral part of science and research deserves closer ...examination. Humans have always used stories to share information and convey complex ideas. To those outside science, science communications can be laden with difficult terms and feel exclusive and unrelatable. There has been a recent call to develop science storytelling skills to improve accessibility of science for a general audience. With the rise of video content on social media platforms, short-format videos can reach an untapped audience for science. This case study looks at a unique interdisciplinary course, Science Docs, that encourages students from all areas of study to form a Community of Practice (CoP) that bridges the gap between scientist, storyteller, and science communication evaluator.
Crowdfunding is a relatively novel concept in Turkish public discourse. Yet, activist media producers in Turkey actively use online opportunities to solicit production, post-production and ...distribution financing. This article explores crowdfunding as a signifier that draws public attention to media texts for which online funding drives are performed. As crowdfunding campaigns circulate through social media, they forge publics around the related films, videos, stories and, more significantly, the social causes around which these media revolve. Based on long-term ethnographic research with independent media producers in Turkey, the article scrutinizes the crowdfunding adventures behind three documentaries, My Child, Ecumenopolis and I Flew You Stayed, as narrated by their producers. Using the analysis of the campaigns for these documentary films as cases, I argue that in addition to being a means to raising funds, crowdfunding is a tool to accomplish social and political ends ranging from creating communities of support and attracting media attention to building a reputation of independence.
People's daily life is inevitably linked to major threats to biodiversity. It is thus important to improve people's conservation awareness. While a growing body of research has demonstrated the ...potential of English-language nature documentaries to raise public conservation awareness, little attention has been paid to nature documentaries that are available only in non-English languages. Here, we assessed the challenges and opportunities for nature documentaries released in China in 2021 to raise public conservation awareness by investigating their thematic, geographical, and taxonomic coverages using a content analysis approach. We found that terrestrial biomes, mammals, and birds were overrepresented in existing nature documentaries in China, while only a quarter of documentaries explicitly covered human destructive impacts on nature. Covering under-represented realms/biomes (e.g., freshwater realm and deep-marine biome), taxa (e.g., invertebrates, plants, and fungi), and anthropogenic threats in future documentaries may help to raise public awareness of biodiversity conservation. Despite these challenges, nature documentaries in China also showed a relatively good coverage of threatened species and biomes under human influence (e.g., cities and farmlands), which have increasingly been shown to be important for conservation. We also found that domestically-produced, Chinese-language nature documentaries provided unique information on biodiversity and ecosystems in China, highlighting their role in raising conservation awareness in China and worldwide. However, only 9 % of them provided English subtitles/versions. Making Chinese-language nature documentaries accessible to the global community by translating them into other languages would help us increase international awareness of biodiversity in China. The methodological approach of this study is easily applicable to nature documentaries produced in other parts of the world. By better understanding the content coverage of nature documentaries globally, we can address gaps in their thematic, geographical, and taxonomic coverages and maximize their contribution to raising conservation awareness.

La creación de piezas informativas en internet ha supuesto la necesidad de creación de diversas herramientas informáticas para adaptar la comunicación multifuncional y los géneros periodísticos ...tradicionales a los nuevos soportes. El docuweb y el reportaje multimedia conforman un lenguaje adaptado cuyo análisis se hace necesario desde el ámbito académico. La adecuación de esta narrativa a la enseñanza profesional de la comunicación implica el estudio de las aplicaciones informáticas en el mercado destinadas a la creación de este tipo de piezas. Los medialabs de las empresas periodísticas realizan una labor imprescindible en este sentido, siendo necesaria la observación y análisis de su trabajo y llamando la atención sobre la ineludible relación directa con los departamentos universitarios dedicados a la enseñanza de los nuevos lenguajes periodísticos adaptados a internet, en este caso concreto focalizados en el género documental y el reportaje.
