Martin Hilpert combines construction grammar and advanced corpus-based methodology into a new way of studying language change. Constructions are generalizations over remembered exemplars of language ...use. These exemplars are stored with all their formal and functional properties, yielding constructional generalizations that contain many parameters of variation. Over time, as patterns of language use are changing, the generalizations are changing with them. This book illustrates the workings of constructional change with three corpus-based studies that reveal patterns of change at several levels of linguistic structure, ranging from allomorphy to word formation and to syntax. Taken together, the results strongly motivate the use of construction grammar in research on diachronic language change. This new perspective has wide-ranging consequences for the way historical linguists think about language change. It will be of particular interest to linguists working on morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics.
El presente estudio analiza la evolución semántica de dos afronegrismos lucumíes (ss. XVI-XIX) cubanos Obbatalà y Oxala/Oshanla/Ochala, procedentes de los arabismos Abdalá ('Abd Allāh) y ojalá (Law ...šāʼa Allāh /In šāʼa Allāh) activos en el español peninsular, desde la llegada del islam a inicios del siglo VIII. Pasan al acervo lingüístico del español caribeño, vía diáspora poblacional, en su mayor medida motivada por el comercio de esclavos negros africanos. Estos dos afronegrismos son resultado de un cambio semántico originado en la koiné al-luga al-fuṣḥà o normativización de la lengua árabe en el texto coránico, dando como resultado una estandarización de léxico y expresiones litúrgicos de santería orisha/oricha/ocha, fruto del contacto entre las diversas variantes habladas por los yoruba arribados a Cuba (XVI-XIX) y las del español caribeño que darán nacimiento a la lengua lucumí. La metodología interdisciplinar (filología, estudios árabes e islámicos e historia) aplicada parte de la definición del fenómeno lingüístico mencionado, las causas históricas y de credo que lo originan, basadas en la influencia extranjera y la exigencia de un nuevo nombre. Para comprender el cambio semántico producido, describimos la etimología del léxico lucumí activo seleccionado y los dos procesos esenciales del cambio dado –reducción y adopción de nuevos sentidos– en su calidad de arabismos que evidencian la transformación cultural en la comunidad lingüística de los lucumíes. Concluimos que la normativización de la lengua árabe litúrgica ha sido un instrumento determinante en la estandarización del lucumí para frenar la disgregación de la lengua y potenciar la identidad de la comunidad de los yoruba en la diáspora hacia las Américas.

Starting from the phrase words and things, we aim to circumstantialize, based on the information provided by dictionaries, encyclopedias and scientific works, where possible, the historical and ...cultural factors that resulted in the appearance and changes in the meanings of some words, related to the history of their referents, i.e. things. We shall insist on those that can be localized in time of space, as they are connected to well-known historical events or persons. Since such information cannot be provided in the definitions in lexicographic works, we have tried to synthetically and accessibly combine etymological interpretations with historical and cultural details.
En este artículo se desvela la etimología del término español gazpacho , que procede del adjetivo latino caccabaceus , derivado de caccabus ('caldero') y aplicado a un tipo de pan. Previamente, se ...revisan las definiciones publicadas en diversos diccionarios y otras obras, y las etimologías propuestas desde la Edad Moderna hasta la actualidad. Se detalla también la evolución fonética experimentada por el término desde su étimo latino. Por último, se interpreta el significado del término a la luz de su etimología y en relación con diversos testimonios escritos y con las variantes existentes en la actualidad de esta preparación culinaria.

The present paper describes the specific contribution of the TEI Lex-0 initiative, which aims to define a terser subset of the TEI Guidelines for the representation of etymological features in ...dictionary entries. Going beyond the basic provision of etymological mechanisms in the TEI Guidelines, TEI Lex-0 Etym proposes a systematic representation of etymological and cognate descriptions by means of embedded constructs based on the (for etymologies) and (for etymons and cognates) elements. In particular, given that all the potential contents of etymons are highly analogous to those of dictionary entries in general, the contents presented herein heavily reuse many of the corresponding features and constraints introduced in other components of TEI Lex-0 for the encoding of etymologies and etymons. The TEI Lex-0 Etym model is also closely aligned with ISO 24613–3 on modeling etymological data and the corresponding TEI serialization available in ISO 24613–4.
