Dr Mayer's work adds about 1700 glosses and offers for the first time extensive information on their paleographic dating. It also contains a large number of scratched glosses, which in many cases ...offer more original material than glosses written by pen.
This article deals with the identification and interpretation of two rare Middle Persian words. Firstly, some attestations of the as yet unrecognized word <hs’lyh> hassārīh are discussed, showing ...that it means “direction”. Then, a semantic analysis of its underived counterpart hassār is carried out, as a basis for an etymological proposal. Finally, it is argued that hassār descends from Old Persian *haçā-sāra- “(having the head) in the same direction”, and a possible reconstruction of the semantic development of the word is provided.
Drawing from the perspective of Contextual Fictional Etymology, in this paper we analyze four Indianist anthroponyms, namely, Irapuã, Coatiabo, Maranguab and Abaeté, found in the works O Guarani, ...Iracema and Ubirajara by José de Alencar. For this purpose, we draw from the theoretical framework of Onomastics (DICK, 1999), Contextual Fictional Etymology (AUTOR, 2018), Lexicology (BIDERMAN, 2001; VILELA, 1995) and Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004, 2009; AUTOR, 2014). To extract the Indianist anthroponyms, we used the WordSmith Tools software (SCOTT, 2012) and some resources of the Genre/Historical version of Corpus do Português (DAVIES, 2006). We considered as Alencar’s anthroponymic etymons the indigenous names created by the author in his works. Towards this end, two criteria were considered: first, the words should not be part of exclusion dictionaries, which publication predates Alencar's works; second, the words should appear in the Corpus do Português (DAVIES, 2006) as having its first occurrence in texts written by Alencar. The creation of anthroponymic etymons by Alencar enabled him to attribute to the indigenous characters not only a name, but also the physical and/or psychological features intended by the author. Therefore, from the perspective of Contextual Fictional Etymology, the study of Alencar’s anthroponymies also entails some knowledge about the language possibilities and the author’s creativity, by means of a lexicon that enabled the expression of his ideals.

By beginning chapters 1 to 4 with etymologies (of nostalgia, faith, hope, and love) and chapters 5 to 7 with topical surveys (discourses of work, philosophies of beauty, and criticism of The Mill on ...the Floss), Mazaheri establishes two basic patterns that shape his study as moving expansively from concept to application. ...his interesting claim that the nostalgia of Eliot's "The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton" (1857) pertains less to a particular Methodist branch of religion than to "the happiness whose secret was a sincere faith in a transcendence" (15) does not appear until seven pages into chapter 1. ...his progression from the Pauline argument about the Gentiles whose deeds demonstrate that the law is written on their hearts (Romans 2: 13–15) to the Gospel parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25–37) works deftly with a range of Biblical texts in relation to "Mr. Gilfill's Love Story" (1857), though for unexplained reasons Mazaheri quotes from the Revised Standard Version rather than the Authorized Version with which Eliot would have been familiar (36–38).
Luidia iwakiensis n. sp. (Asteroidea, Echinodermata) is described in Japanese waters. A molecular phylogenetic analysis including 18 Luidia species supported Döderlein L (1920, Siboga Expedition 4, ...193–291) four morphogroups. Morphological reconsideration revealed three of the eight criteria of the morphogroup adopted by Döderlein were justified, but the remaining five characters were rejected. The placement of the new species in the Ciliaris-group was supported by molecular as well as morphological evidence, however, it varies from other species of Ciliaris-group by arm number, length of major inferomarginal spines, and pedicellariae on actinal plates.

This study examined the development of the metaphorical and metonymic meanings of the words black and white appearing in Japanese contexts by contrasting the meanings in Japanese with the original ...meanings in English. It investigated the semantic shifts which affected grammatical structures in highly real-time language on Twitter. The study revealed that black and white in Japanese contexts were used metaphorically in the narrow sense of the original English meaning. Black was used in the meanings of break the rules, persecute, and take advantage while white was used in the opposite manner. Nevertheless, these meanings do not appear in English contexts. It is a semantic change for specific usages in Japanese contexts. At first, the words black and white were mainly used with the noun company as compounds. Then, their meanings were expanded in a metonymic manner with the contiguity of senses. In other words, from being used to describe a characteristic of a company, black and white are later used to describe the characteristic of a company worker and an action of a person. The usage also changes from a compound noun to a single word in a predicate and as an adjective na.
