Desde 1946 tenho tido farta oportunidade de estudar a fauna dos extensos cerrados do Brasil Central em Goiás, Mato Grosso e Pará, regiões ainda não atingidas pela civilização, no começo do meu ...trabalho ali. Cheguei à conclusão que, de um modo geral, não é fácil estabelecer o conceito de uma fauna típica do cerrado – “típico" no sentido de tratar-se de uma fauna endêmica, restrita à formação do cerrado. As aves características do cerrado, p. ex., vi1vem, na sua maioria, também em outros tipos de paisagens abertas de composição botânica desigual e de origem notoriamente diferente, inclusive regiões transformadas pela cultura. Assim, torna-se às vezes problemático averiguar a distribuição original desses animais.
Wildlife mortality due to collisions with vehicles (roadkill) is one of the predominant negative effects exerted by roads on many wildlife species. Reducing roadkill is therefore a major component of ...wildlife conservation. Roadkill is affected by various factors, including road attributes and traffic volume. It is theorized that the effect of traffic volume on roadkill probability should be unimodal. However, empirical evidence for this theory is lacking. Using a large‐scale roadkill database of 18 wildlife species in Israel, encompassing 2846 km of roads over 10 years, we explored the effects of traffic volume and road attributes (e.g., road lighting, verge vegetation) on roadkill probability with a multivariate generalized linear mixed model. A unimodal effect of traffic volume was identified for the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), whereas 5 species demonstrated a novel quadratic U‐shaped effect (e.g., golden jackal Canis aureus). Four species showed a negative linear effect (e.g., wild boar Sus scrofa). We also identified varying effects of road attributes on roadkill. For instance, road lighting and roadside trees decreased roadkill for several species, whereas bus stops and concrete guardrails led to increased roadkill. The theorized unimodal effect of traffic volume may only apply to large, agile species, and the U‐shaped effect could be related to intraspecies variability in traffic avoidance behavior. In general, we found that both high‐traffic and low‐traffic roads can pose a high mortality risk for wildlife. It is therefore important to monitor roadkill on low‐traffic roads and adapt road attributes to mitigate roadkill. Road design for effective roadkill mitigation includes reducing the use of concrete guardrails and median barriers where possible and avoiding dense bushes in verge landscaping. These measures are complemented by employing wildlife detection systems, driver warnings, and seasonal speed reduction measures on low‐traffic roads identified as roadkill hotspots.

Resumen
La mortalidad de fauna por colisiones con vehículos es uno de los efectos negativos predominantes que tienen las carreteras sobre muchas especies. Por lo tanto, la reducción de esta mortalidad es un componente principal de la conservación de la fauna. Esta mortalidad se ve afectada por varios factores, incluyendo las características de la carretera y el volumen de tráfico. Soil biota influences nutrient cycling and climate regulation and represents an important fraction of global biodiversity, yet we know very little about how this soil biota responds to habitat ...fragmentation and degradation of habitat quality.
We studied the response of different soil trophic groups (microbes and soil fauna), and their trophic structure, to changes in their habitat derived from forest long‐term management and extensive tree die‐off in a Mediterranean ecosystem. Specifically, we evaluated changes in (i) habitat size, (ii) habitat resource availability and heterogeneity and (iii) habitat connectivity. To do this, we sampled the soil biota of 43 holm oak trees (and five open interspaces) differing in size, quality, heterogeneity, connectivity and the effect of die‐off (healthy or affected). We sorted soil biota by trophic group and related their richness to habitat characteristics.
Seven of the 12 trophic groups evaluated increased their species richness with soil organic carbon content, which was the most frequently selected driver of soil biota (both microbial and faunal richness). Habitat connectivity positively affected the richness of larger organisms (fauna) and plant attributes (richness, productivity and specific leaf area) also showed significant but contrasting effects depending on the group evaluated.
Due to the idiosyncratic responses of different groups, the entire trophic structure (microbes and fauna) was affected by a more complex set of factors than most trophic groups in isolation, including interactions between habitat size and resource availability or connectivity. A major factor influencing habitat resource availability was the die‐off of the dominant tree species (drastically altering tree productivity). We found weaker and more negative relationships between trophic groups under trees suffering from die‐off than beneath healthy trees, particularly between microbial rather than faunal groups.
Synthesis. We provide a comprehensive assessment of the response of key members of the soil food web to habitat fragmentation and tree die‐off (landscape‐level plant–soil interactions), illustrating the major role of soil carbon, habitat connectivity and tree die‐off in driving soil biodiversity and trophic structure.
Resumen
Los organismos que viven en el suelo representan un cuarto de la biodiversidad global y determinan en gran parte la fertilidad del suelo o la regulación del clima. Sin embargo, sabemos muy poco sobre cómo esta biodiversidad del suelo responde al cambio global, incluyendo la fragmentación y pérdida de la calidad de sus hábitats, conocidos factores que reducen la biodiversidad de otros organismos.
En este estudio analizamos la respuesta de diferentes grupos tróficos de microbios y fauna del suelo (detritívoros, herbívoros, depredadores, etc.) a los cambios en su hábitat derivados del manejo forestal y la seca de los árboles en un ecosistema mediterráneo. Específicamente, evaluamos los cambios en: i) el tamaño del hábitat, ii) la disponibilidad y heterogeneidad de los recursos del hábitat, y iii) la conectividad del hábitat. Para hacer esto, muestreamos la biodiversidad del suelo bajo 43 encinas (y cinco espacios abiertos) que diferían en tamaño, calidad, heterogeneidad, conectividad, y en el efecto de la seca en los árboles (sanos o afectados). Clasificamos la biota del suelo por grupo trófico y relacionamos su riqueza con las características del hábitat.
Nuestros resultados muestran que, entre todos los cambios en el hábitat estudiados, la calidad del hábitat (en concreto el contenido de carbono orgánico del suelo) fue el principal factor determinante de la biodiversidad del suelo, aumentando la riqueza de siete de los 12 grupos tróficos evaluados tanto de fauna (ácaros y colémbolos, sobre todo) como de microbios (bacterias y hongos mayoritariamente). La conectividad del hábitat también fue un predictor muy importante, que afectó positivamente a la riqueza de organismos más grandes (fauna). Hemos visto también que la seca de la encina debilita de forma importante las relaciones entre distintos grupos tróficos, que además se vuelven más negativas.
En general, nuestro estudio ayuda a entender mejor el efecto de la fragmentación de nuestros bosques, así como el de la seca de la encina, sobre una parte muy importante de la biodiversidad que se conoce poco. En este sentido, nuestro trabajo muestra el importante papel del carbono del suelo, la conectividad del hábitat y la seca de los árboles en la biodiversidad del suelo y su estructura trófica.

We compiled the records for the genus Salvatoria from Brazilian coastal and oceanic habitats, collected by several projects along the years. Here we present 12 species, eight of which already ...reported-S. breviarticulata comb. nov., S. clavata, S. euritmica, S. heterocirra, S. limbata, S. longiarticulata comb. nov., S. neapolitana and S. cf. nitidula-with comments regarding the confidence of some of these records. We also describe three new species, S. marielleae n. sp. and Salvatoria nitiduloides n. sp., based on material from Fernando de Noronha and Trindade islands, off the Northeastern Brazilian coast, and S. ypsiloides n. sp., from Fernando de Noronha and also, Campos Basin, off Southeastern Brazilian coast, in depths down to 970 m. Finally, we report a probably undescribed species, Salvatoria sp., represented by only one specimen lacking median antenna, preventing us to proceed with further identification properly. A dichotomous identification key and a comparative table with morphological data of specimens belonging to these species are also provided.

The 2020's update of marine alien species list from Turkey yielded a total of 539 species belonging to 18 taxonomic groups, 404 of which have become established in the region and 135 species are ...casual. A total of 185 new alien species have been added to the list since the previous update of 2011. The present compilation includes reports of an ascidian species (Rhodosoma turcicum) new to the marine fauna of Turkey and range extensions of six species. Among the established species, 105 species have invasive characters at least in one zoogeographic region, comprising 19% of all alien species. Mollusca ranked first in terms of the number of species (123 species), followed by Foraminifera (91 species), Pisces (80 species) and Arthropoda (79 species). The number of alien species found in seas surrounding Turkey ranged from 28 (Black Sea) to 413 (Levantine Sea). The vectoral importance of the Suez Canal diminishes when moving from south to north, accounting for 72% of species introductions in the Levantine Sea vs. only 11% of species introductions in the Black Sea. Most alien species on the coasts of Turkey were originated from the Red Sea (58%), due to the proximity of the country to the Suez Canal. Shipping activities transported 39% of alien species, mainly from the Indo-Pacific area (20%) and the Atlantic Ocean (10%). Misidentified species (such as Pterois volitans, Trachurus declivis, etc.) and species those classified as questionable or cryptogenic were omitted from the list based on new data gathered in the last decade and expert judgements. The documented impacts of invasive species on socio-economy, biodiversity and human health in the last decade as well as the legislation and management backgrounds against alien species in Turkey are presented.
Aims
Soil fauna is one of the major drivers of plant litter decomposition. This study aims to assess how soil fauna density and diversity may affect litter decomposition. Also, we assessed whether ...faunal communities inside the litterbags that are used to control the access of faunal groups or communities in ambient soils are better for predicting their effects on litter decomposition, given that soil fauna frequently move into and out of such litterbags.
Methods
To answer this question, we synthesized 5336 observations extracted from 46 publications to assess the effects of soil fauna communities, their density and diversity on the rate of litter decomposition (
k
) and litter mass loss.
Results
Results showed that (1) the presence of soil fauna significantly increased
k
by an average of 33.0% and that the effects were mainly controlled by initial litter concentrations of phosphorus and magnesium, (2) the density and diversity of soil fauna in litterbags significantly affected
k
and/or mass loss, but ambient communities had limited effects, and (3) the effects of soil fauna in litterbags on
k
were most significant during the early stages of decomposition (0 − 30% mass loss).
Conclusions
Our study clearly showed that litterbag communities were better for predicting the effects of soil fauna on litter decomposition, and that their effects were most significant during the early stages of decomposition. These results improve our ability to estimate the contribution of soil fauna in liter decomposition and the associated carbon and nutrient cycling.
The widespread occurrence of microplastic has invaded the environment to an extent that it appears to be present throughout the globe. This review investigated the global abundance and distribution ...of microplastics in marine and freshwater ecosystems. Furthermore, the issues and challenges have been addressed for better findings in microplastics studies. Findings revealed that the accumulation of microplastics varies geographically, with locations, hydrodynamic conditions, environmental pressure, and time. From this review, it is crucial that proper regulations are proposed and implemented in order to reduce the occurrence of microplastics in the aquatic environment. Without appropriate law and regulations, microplastic pollution will eventually threaten human livelihood.
Litter decomposition is a fundamental process for nutrient cycling and C fluxes between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Multiple factors such as environmental conditions, litter quality ...and decomposer organisms are known to influence this ecological process in direct and indirect ways. However, it remains poorly understood to what extent this entangled bank of complex interactions can be disrupted by several global change drivers such as climate change and invasive species.
Here we reported main findings from a litter decomposition experiment conducted in a natural mixed forest invaded by Phytophthora cinnamomi, an exotic oomycete well known for causing tree disease and forest decline. In two Mediterranean forest types (namely woodland and closed forest), we first built a rainfall exclusion infrastructure to reduce natural precipitation by 30%. Then, we followed the spatial variation in C and N leaf litter dynamics as well as the abundance of the exotic oomycete P. cinnamomi for 18 months under both control and rainfall exclusion conditions using a litter bag methodology with different mesh sizes to further evaluate the indirect role of mesofauna abundance and diversity in litter C and N temporal dynamics.
Significant reductions in soil moisture produced by the experimental rainfall exclusion increased C litter loss with time directly, and indirectly via increases in overall mesofauna abundance and changes in the ratio between predators and decomposers. N litter dynamics were in contrast modulated mainly by initial litter quality. Surprisingly, P. cinnamomi abundance did not correlate with variation in initial litter quality as previously suggested, but we found that the exotic oomycete was negatively correlated with both decomposer and predator abundances. These results suggest it might participate indirectly in litter decomposition dynamics through the biotic soil component.
Synthesis. Contrary to expected, our results show that a moderate but realistic rainfall reduction can accelerate the litter decomposition process. It also points out to litter fauna as a key component modulating the indirect impacts of global change drivers on litter decomposition.
Resumen
La descomposición de la hojarasca es un proceso fundamental para el ciclo de nutrientes y los flujos de C entre los ecosistemas terrestres y la atmósfera. Se sabe que en este proceso ecológico influyen directa e indirectamente múltiples factores que interaccionan entre sí, como las condiciones ambientales, la calidad de la hojarasca y los organismos descomponedores. Sin embargo, se desconoce hasta qué punto este intrincado conjunto de interacciones complejas puede verse afectado por diversos factores del cambio global, como el cambio climático y las especies invasoras.
En este estudio presentamos los principales hallazgos de un experimento de descomposición de hojarasca realizado en dos bosques mixtos mediterráneos invadidos por Phytophthora cinnamomi, un oomiceto exótico conocido por causar enfermedades de los árboles y decaimiento forestal. En primer lugar, construimos una infraestructura de exclusión de lluvia para reducir las precipitaciones naturales en un 30% en dos tipos de bosque. A continuación, estudiamos la variación en el contenido de C y N de la hojarasca, así como la abundancia de P. cinnamomi durante 18 meses bajo condiciones de control y exclusión de lluvia. Utilizamos bolsas de hojarasca con diferentes tamaños de malla para evaluar en profundidad el papel de la abundancia y diversidad de la mesofauna en la dinámica temporal del C y N de la hojarasca.
La reducción significativa de la humedad del suelo producida por la exclusión experimental de lluvia afectó directamente incrementando la pérdida de C de la hojarasca con el tiempo, e indirectamente a través de un aumento en la abundancia general de la mesofauna y cambios en la proporción entre depredadores y descomponedores. Por el contrario, la dinámica del N fue modulada principalmente por la calidad inicial de la hojarasca. Sorprendentemente, la abundancia de P. cinnamomi no se correlacionó con la variación en la calidad inicial de la hojarasca, aunque el oomiceto exótico se correlacionó negativamente con la abundancia de descomponedores y depredadores. Estos resultados sugieren que P. cinnamomi podría participar indirectamente en la dinámica de descomposición de la hojarasca con efectos sobre el componente biótico del suelo.
Síntesis. Al contrario de lo esperado, nuestros resultados muestran que una reducción moderada de las precipitaciones puede acelerar el proceso de descomposición de la hojarasca. También señalan a la mesofauna como un componente clave que modula los impactos indirectos de los motores del cambio global en la descomposición de la hojarasca.

Large carnivores are persecuted globally because they threaten human industries and livelihoods. How this conflict is managed has consequencesfor the conservation of large carnivores and biodiversity ...more broadly. Mitigating human-predator conflict should be evidence-based and accommodate people's values while protecting carnivores. Despite much research into human and large-carnivore coexistence strategies, there have been few attempts to document the success of conflict-mitigation strategies on a global scale. We conducted a meta-analysis of global research on conflict mitigation related to large carnivores and humans. We focused on conflicts that arise from the threat large carnivores pose to livestock. We first used structured and unstructured searching to identify replicated studies that used before-after or control-impact design to measure change in livestock loss as a result of implementing a management intervention. We then extracted relevant data from these studies to calculate an overall effect sizefor each intervention type. Research effort and focus varied among continents and aligned with the histories and cultures that shaped livestock production and attitudes toward carnivores. Livestock guardian animals most effectively reduced livestock losses. Lethal control was the second most effective control, although its success varied the most, and guardian animals and lethal control did not differ significantly. Financial incentives have promoted tolerance of large carnivores in some settings and reduced retaliatory killings. We suggest coexistence strategies be locationspecific, incorporate cultural values and environmental conditions, and be designed such that return on financial investment can be evaluated. Improved monitoring of mitigation measures is urgently required to promote effective evidence-based policy. Los carnívoros grandes son perseguidos en todo el mundo porque amenazan el sustento y las industrias humanas. En general, la forma en que se maneja este conflicto tiene consecuencias para la conservación de los grandes carnívoros y la biodiversidad. La mitigación del conflicto humano - fauna debería tener bases en las evidencias y debería acomodarse a los valores de las personas mientras protege a los carnívoros. A pesar de la amplia investigación sobre las estrategias de coexistencia entre humanos y carnívoros grandes, ha habido pocos intentos por documentar el éxito de las estrategias mitigantes del conflicto en una escala global. Realizamos un meta-análisis de la investigación global sobre la mitigación de conflictos relacionados con los carnívoros grandes y los humanos. Los animales guardianes del ganado fueron los que redujeron con mayor eficiencia las pérdidas del ganado. El control letal fue el segundo control más efectivo, aunque su éxito fue el que más varió, y los animales guardianes y el control letal no difirieron significativamente. Los incentivos económicos han promovido la tolerancia de los carnívoros grandes en algunas localidades y han reducido las muertes por represalia. Sugerimos que las estrategias de coexistencia sean específicas de la localidad, incorporen los valores culturales y las condiciones ambientales, y estén diseñadas de tal forma que el retorno de una inversión financiera pueda ser evaluado. El monitoreo mejorado de las medidas de mitigación es requerido urgentemente para promover la política efectiva basada en evidencias.
