Vertebrate animals can be injured or threatened with injury through human activities, thus warranting their "rescue." Details of wildlife rescuef rehabilitation, release, and associated research (our ...4 Rs) are often recorded in large databases, resulting in a wealth of available information. This information has huge research potential and can contribute to understanding of animal biology, anthropogenic impacts on wildlife, and species conservation. However, such databases have been little used, few studies have evaluated factors influencing success of rehabilitation and/or release, recommended actions to conserve threatened species have rarely arisen, and direct benefitsfor species conservation are yet to be demonstrated. We therefore recommend that additional research be based on data from rescue, rehabilitation, and release of animals that is broader in scope than previous research and would have community support. Los animales vertebrados pueden ser heridos o sufrir amenazas de heridas por medio de las actividades humanas, lo que garantiza su "rescate". Los detalles del rescate, rehabilitación, liberación e investigación asociada de fauna (las 4 Rs, por sus siglas en inglés) están continuamente registrados en grandes bases de datos, lo que resulta en una riqueza de información disponible. Esta información tiene un enorme potencial de investigación y puede contribuir al entendimiento de la biología animal, los impactos antropogénicos sobre la fauna, y la conservación de las especies. Sin embargo, dichas bases de datos se han utilizado muy poco, escasos estudios han evaluado los factores que influyen sobre el éxito de la rehabilitación y/o la liberación, las acciones recomendadas para conservar a las especies amenazadas han surgido en raras ocasiones, y los beneficios directos para la conservación de las especies todavía no se han demostrado. Por esto recomendamos que investigaciones futuras se basen en datos sobre el rescate, rehabilitación y liberación de los animales, pues tiene un enfoque más generalizado que las investigaciones previas y tendría apoyo dentro de la comunidad.
Litter decomposition is a fundamental process for nutrient cycling and C fluxes between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Multiple factors such as environmental conditions, litter quality ...and decomposer organisms are known to influence this ecological process in direct and indirect ways. However, it remains poorly understood to what extent this entangled bank of complex interactions can be disrupted by several global change drivers such as climate change and invasive species.
Here we reported main findings from a litter decomposition experiment conducted in a natural mixed forest invaded by Phytophthora cinnamomi, an exotic oomycete well known for causing tree disease and forest decline. In two Mediterranean forest types (namely woodland and closed forest), we first built a rainfall exclusion infrastructure to reduce natural precipitation by 30%. Then, we followed the spatial variation in C and N leaf litter dynamics as well as the abundance of the exotic oomycete P. cinnamomi for 18 months under both control and rainfall exclusion conditions using a litter bag methodology with different mesh sizes to further evaluate the indirect role of mesofauna abundance and diversity in litter C and N temporal dynamics.
Significant reductions in soil moisture produced by the experimental rainfall exclusion increased C litter loss with time directly, and indirectly via increases in overall mesofauna abundance and changes in the ratio between predators and decomposers. N litter dynamics were in contrast modulated mainly by initial litter quality. Surprisingly, P. cinnamomi abundance did not correlate with variation in initial litter quality as previously suggested, but we found that the exotic oomycete was negatively correlated with both decomposer and predator abundances. These results suggest it might participate indirectly in litter decomposition dynamics through the biotic soil component.
Synthesis. Contrary to expected, our results show that a moderate but realistic rainfall reduction can accelerate the litter decomposition process. It also points out to litter fauna as a key component modulating the indirect impacts of global change drivers on litter decomposition.

La descomposición de la hojarasca es un proceso fundamental para el ciclo de nutrientes y los flujos de C entre los ecosistemas terrestres y la atmósfera. Se sabe que en este proceso ecológico influyen directa e indirectamente múltiples factores que interaccionan entre sí, como las condiciones ambientales, la calidad de la hojarasca y los organismos descomponedores. Sin embargo, se desconoce hasta qué punto este intrincado conjunto de interacciones complejas puede verse afectado por diversos factores del cambio global, como el cambio climático y las especies invasoras.
En este estudio presentamos los principales hallazgos de un experimento de descomposición de hojarasca realizado en dos bosques mixtos mediterráneos invadidos por Phytophthora cinnamomi, un oomiceto exótico conocido por causar enfermedades de los árboles y decaimiento forestal. En primer lugar, construimos una infraestructura de exclusión de lluvia para reducir las precipitaciones naturales en un 30% en dos tipos de bosque. A continuación, estudiamos la variación en el contenido de C y N de la hojarasca, así como la abundancia de P. cinnamomi durante 18 meses bajo condiciones de control y exclusión de lluvia. Utilizamos bolsas de hojarasca con diferentes tamaños de malla para evaluar en profundidad el papel de la abundancia y diversidad de la mesofauna en la dinámica temporal del C y N de la hojarasca.
La reducción significativa de la humedad del suelo producida por la exclusión experimental de lluvia afectó directamente incrementando la pérdida de C de la hojarasca con el tiempo, e indirectamente a través de un aumento en la abundancia general de la mesofauna y cambios en la proporción entre depredadores y descomponedores. Por el contrario, la dinámica del N fue modulada principalmente por la calidad inicial de la hojarasca. Sorprendentemente, la abundancia de P. cinnamomi no se correlacionó con la variación en la calidad inicial de la hojarasca, aunque el oomiceto exótico se correlacionó negativamente con la abundancia de descomponedores y depredadores. Estos resultados sugieren que P. cinnamomi podría participar indirectamente en la dinámica de descomposición de la hojarasca con efectos sobre el componente biótico del suelo.

The relationship between biodiversity and multitrophic ecosystem functions (BEF) remains poorly studied in forests. There have been inconsistent reports regarding the significance of tree diversity ...effects on ecosystem functions, which may be better understood by considering critical biotic interactions of trees.
This study investigates the role of tree‐mycorrhizal associations that may shape forest BEF relationships across multiple ecosystem functions. We used a field experiment (MyDiv) that comprises 10 deciduous tree species associated with either arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) or ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi to create gradients in species richness (1, 2, 4 species) and different mycorrhizal communities (only AM‐species AM fungi associated tree species or EcM‐species EcM fungi associated tree species, or a combination of both). We investigated the effects of tree species richness and mycorrhizal types on crucial multitrophic ecosystem functions (foliage damage, predation using artificial caterpillars and soil fauna feeding activity ~0–10 cm) and assessed how these effects were mediated by stand characteristics.
Overall, we found that tree species richness and mycorrhizal types strongly affected multitrophic ecosystem functions. Compared to monocultures, 4‐species mixtures with both mycorrhizal types experienced significantly lower foliage damage. The mixtures of EcM‐species supported significantly higher predation (i.e. a greater proportion of artificial caterpillars being attacked), and this effect strengthened with tree species richness. The effects of tree species richness on soil fauna feeding activity were negative across all mycorrhizal types in the lower soil layer. Moreover, we showed that tree diversity effects were mediated by above‐ground tree biomass, vertical structural complexity and leaf quality, with the dominating mechanisms largely depending on the mycorrhizal types.
Synthesis. Tree species richness affected multitrophic ecosystem functioning by (1) directly decreasing the proportion of foliage damage in the communities with both mycorrhizal types, where AM‐species benefited from mixing with EcM‐species, and (2) increasing predation rates via changes in the vertical structural complexity in mixtures of EcM‐species. Our results highlight the importance of considering mycorrhizal types for managing well‐functioning mixed‐species forests and contribute to broadening the mechanistic understanding of the context‐dependent BEF relationships in forests.
Tree species richness affected multitrophic ecosystem functioning by (1) increasing predation only in the mixture of EcM‐species (EcM), (2) decreasing herbivory damage only in the communities with both mycorrhizal types (AM + EcM) and (3) decreasing decomposition indicated by the soil fauna feeding activity. These results highlight the importance of considering mycorrhizal types for managing well‐functioning mixed‐species forests.
Achieving coexistence between large carnivores and humans in human‐dominated landscapes (HDLs) is a key challenge for societies globally. This challenge cannot be adequately met with the current ...sectoral approaches to HDL governance and an academic community largely dominated by disciplinary sectors. Academia (universities and other research institutions and organizations) should take a more active role in embracing societal challenges around conservation of large carnivores in HDLs by facilitating cross‐sectoral cooperation to mainstream coexistence of humans and large carnivores. Drawing on lessons from populated regions of Europe, Asia, and South America with substantial densities of large carnivores, we suggest academia should better embrace the principles and methods of sustainability sciences and create institutional spaces for the implementation of transdisciplinary curricula and projects; reflect on research approaches (i.e., disciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary) they apply and how their outcomes could aid leveraging institutional transformations for mainstreaming; and engage with various institutions and stakeholder groups to create novel institutional structures that can respond to multiple challenges of HDL management and human–large carnivore coexistence. Success in mainstreaming this coexistence in HDL will rest on the ability to think and act cooperatively. Such a conservation achievement, if realized, stands to have far‐reaching benefits for people and biodiversity.
Incorporación de la Coexistencia entre Humanos y Carnívoros Mayores por Medio de la Colaboración Institucional

Un reto importante para las sociedades mundiales es lograr la coexistencia entre los carnívoros mayores y los humanos en los paisajes dominados por el hombre (HDL, en inglés). Este reto no puede enfrentarse adecuadamente con las actuales estrategias sectoriales que se usan en la gobernanza de los HDL y con una comunidad académica dominada principalmente por sectores disciplinarios. La academia (las universidades y demás instituciones y organizaciones de investigación) debería realizar un papel más activo en la aceptación de los retos sociales que rodean a la conservación de los carnívoros mayores en los HDL al facilitar la cooperación intersectorial para incorporar la coexistencia entre humanos y dichos carnívoros. A partir de las lecciones aprendidas en las regiones pobladas por densidades abundantes de carnívoros mayores en América del Sur, Asia y Europa, sugerimos que la academia debería aceptar de mejor manera los principios y métodos de las ciencia de la sustentabilidad y crear espacios institucionales para la implementación de currículos y proyectos; reflexionar sobre las estrategias de investigación (es decir, disciplinaria, interdisciplinaria o transdisciplinaria) que aplican y cómo sus resultados podrían ayudar en fomentar las transformaciones institucionales para la incorporación; y participar junto a varias instituciones y grupos de accionistas para crear estructuras institucionales novedosas que puedan responder a los múltiples retos del manejo de los HDL y de la coexistencia entre humanos y carnívoros mayores. Understanding what shape values (which ultimately shape human behavior) will help improve the effectiveness of conservation solutions that depend on public support. To contribute to this ...understanding, we investigated the influence of societal-level changes, such as modernization, on values in a multilevel framework. We collected survey responses (n = 4183) to questionnaires mailed to a random selection of households within each county in Washington (U.S.A.) (response rate 32%). We used multilevel modeling to determine the relationship between modernization (e.g., county-level urbanization, wealth, and education) and wildlife value orientations (values that shape thought about wildlife) while controlling for individuallevel sociodemographics. We then explored how values influence conservation support at different levels (e.g., individual and county) and how values explain conservation support in a case study of public responses to wolf (Canis lupis) recovery. We found positive associations between county-level examples of modernization and mutualism (a wildlife value orientation that prioritizes the perceived needs of wildlife) independent of a respondent's sociodemographics, and negative associations between modernization and domination (a wildlife value orientation that prioritizes human needs). Our results suggest that context has an additive impact on one's values; certain locations exhibited domination values, whereas others exhibited a mix of value types. This finding is important because actions that restrict human interests to promote biodiversity were negatively associated with domination and positively associated with mutualism. In the wolf case study, mutualism was strongly correlated with less social conflict over wolf recovery in many, but not all, counties (e.g., Pearson's r correlation = 0.59 in one county and a nonsignificant correlation in another). Our findings suggest that modernization operates on values within a state with implications for biodiversity, but other factors in addition to values must be investigated to fully understand what leads to proconservation behavior. The international wildlife trade presents severe conservation and environmental security risks, yet no international regulatory framework exists to monitor the trade of species not listed in the ...appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). We explored the composition and dynamics of internationally regulated versus nonregulated trade, with a focus on importations of wild‐caught terrestrial vertebrates entering the United States from 2009 to 2018. We used 10 years of species‐level trade records of the numbers of live, wild‐caught animals imported to the United States and data on International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates of extinction risk to determine whether there were differences in the diversity, abundance, and risk to extinction among imports of CITES‐listed versus unlisted species. We found 3.6 times the number of unlisted species in U.S. imports compared with CITES‐listed species (1366 vs. 378 species). The CITES‐listed species were more likely to face reported conservation threats relative to unlisted species (71.7% vs. 27.5%). However, 376 unlisted species faced conversation threats, 297 species had unknown population trends, and 139 species were without an evaluation by the IUCN. Unlisted species appearing for the first time in records were imported 5.5 times more often relative to CITES‐listed species. Unlisted reptiles had the largest rate of entry, averaging 53 unique species appearing in imports for the first time per year. Overall trade quantities were approximately 11 times larger for imports of unlisted species relative to imports of CITES‐listed species. Countries that were top exporters of CITES‐listed species were mostly different from exporters of unlisted species. Because of the vulnerabilities of unlisted, traded species entering the United States and increasing global demand, we strongly recommend governments adapt their policies to monitor and report on the trade of all wildlife.
El Mercado Estadunidense de Fauna Importada No Enlistada en el Tratado Multilateral CITES

Aunque el mercado internacional de fauna representa un riesgo severo para la conservación y la seguridad ambiental, no existe un marco internacional de regulación para monitorear el mercado de especies que no están en los apéndices de la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres (CITES). Exploramos la composición y las dinámicas del mercado regulado internacionalmente frente al que no lo está, enfocados en la importación de vertebrados terrestres capturados en vida silvestre que entraron a Estados Unidos entre 2009 y 2018. Usamos el registro de comercio a nivel de especie del número de animales vivos capturados en vida silvestre e importados a Estados Unidos durante diez años y datos de los estimados de extinción de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN) para determinar si hay diferencias en la diversidad, abundancia y el riesgo de extinción entre las especies importadas enlistadas o no en CITES. Commercial-scale mining for polymetallic nodules could have a major impact on the deep-sea environment, but the effects of these mining activities on deep-sea ecosystems are very poorly known. The ...first commercial test mining for polymetallic nodules was carried out in 1970. Since then a number of small-scale commercial test mining or scientific disturbance studies have been carried out. Here we evaluate changes in faunal densities and diversity of benthic communities measured in response to these 11 simulated or test nodule mining disturbances using meta-analysis techniques. We find that impacts are often severe immediately after mining, with major negative changes in density and diversity of most groups occurring. However, in some cases, the mobile fauna and small-sized fauna experienced less negative impacts over the longer term. At seven sites in the Pacific, multiple surveys assessed recovery in fauna over periods of up to 26 years. Almost all studies show some recovery in faunal density and diversity for meiofauna and mobile megafauna, often within one year. However, very few faunal groups return to baseline or control conditions after two decades. The effects of polymetallic nodule mining are likely to be long term. Our analyses show considerable negative biological effects of seafloor nodule mining, even at the small scale of test mining experiments, although there is variation in sensitivity amongst organisms of different sizes and functional groups, which have important implications for ecosystem responses. Unfortunately, many past studies have limitations that reduce their effectiveness in determining responses. We provide recommendations to improve future mining impact test studies. Further research to assess the effects of test-mining activities will inform ways to improve mining practices and guide effective environmental management of mining activities.
Wildfires underpin the dynamics and diversity of many ecosystems worldwide, and plants show a plethora of adaptive traits for persisting recurrent fires. Many fire-prone ecosystems also harbor a rich ...fauna; however, knowledge about adaptive traits to fire in animals remains poorly explored. We review existing literature and suggest that fire is an important evolutionary driver for animal diversity because (1) many animals are present in fire-prone landscapes and may have structural and phenotypic characters that contribute to adaptation to these open landscapes; and (2) in some cases, animals from fire-prone ecosystems may show specific fire adaptations. While there is limited evidence on morphological fire adaptations in animals, there is evidence suggesting that different behaviors might provide a rich source of putative fire adaptations; this is because, in contrast to plants, most animals are mobile, unitary organisms, have reduced survival when directly burnt by fire and can move away from the fire. We call for research on fire adaptations (morphological, behavioral, and physiological) in animals, and emphasize that in the animal kingdom many fire adaptations are likely to be behavioral. While it may be difficult to discern these adaptations from other animal behaviors, making this distinction is fundamental if we want to understand the role of fire in shaping biodiversity. Developing this understanding is critical to how we view and manage our ecosystems in the face of current global and fire regime changes.
As ecological data and associated analyses become more widely available, synthesizing results for effective communication with stakeholders is essential. In the case of wildlife corridors, managers ...in human‐dominated landscapes need to identify both the locations of corridors and multiple stakeholders for effective oversight. We synthesized five independent studies of tiger (Panthera tigris) connectivity in central India, a global priority landscape for tiger conservation, to quantify agreement on landscape permeability for tiger movement and potential movement pathways. We used the latter analysis to identify connectivity areas on which studies agreed and stakeholders associated with these areas to determine relevant participants in corridor management. Three or more of the five studies’ resistance layers agreed in 63% of the study area. Areas in which all studies agree on resistance were of primarily low (66%, e.g., forest) and high (24%, e.g., urban) resistance. Agreement was lower in intermediate resistance areas (e.g., agriculture). Despite these differences, the studies largely agreed on areas with high levels of potential movement: >40% of high average (top 20%) current‐flow pixels were also in the top 20% of current‐flow agreement pixels (measured by low variation), indicating consensus connectivity areas (CCAs) as conservation priorities. Roughly 70% of the CCAs fell within village administrative boundaries, and 100% overlapped forest department management boundaries, suggesting that people live and use forests within these priority areas. Over 16% of total CCAs’ area was within 1 km of linear infrastructure (437 road, 170 railway, 179 transmission line, and 339 canal crossings; 105 mines within 1 km of CCAs). In 2019, 78% of forest land diversions for infrastructure and mining in Madhya Pradesh (which comprises most of the study region) took place in districts with CCAs. Acute competition for land in this landscape with globally important wildlife corridors calls for an effective comanagement strategy involving local communities, forest departments, and infrastructure planners.
