This study explores how the increasingly popular blog format, as adopted by
journalists affiliated with mainstream media outlets, affects long-standing
journalistic norms and practice. It focuses on ...non-partisanship, transparency and
the gatekeeping role, using a content analysis of 20 weblogs dealing with politics
or civic affairs. Although expressions of opinion are common, most journalists are
seeking to remain gatekeepers even in this highly interactive and participatory
format. Political j-bloggers use links extensively - but mostly to other mainstream
media sites. At least in their early use, journalists are
‘normalizing’ the blog as a component, and in some ways an
enhancement, of traditional journalistic norms and practices.
(Series Information) European Papers - A Journal on Law and Integration, 2023 8(2), 405-410 | European Forum Highlight of 26 July 2023 | (Abstract) The Digital Markets Act (DMA) intends to ensure ...contestable and fair markets in the digital sector through the introduction of obligations for “gatekeepers”. This term represents a legal innovation. No mention of gatekeepers can be retrieved in the case law regarding digital platforms, and the origins of the nomenclature cannot be ascribed to competition law. The concept can, however, be linked to information studies: its adoption in the DMA reflects the centrality of information control for contestability and fairness. A look at the DMA treatment of gatekeepers reveals that, on the one hand, it is coherent with an information-based approach, while on the other it is not devoid of elements typical of a competition law approach. Only the future interpretation of the DMA will show whether the Regulation is an attempt to inform competition policy with notions fit for the data economy or if it is bound to depart from a competition-based reading.
Tirto.id brings a new color in covering cases of sexual violence in the Indonesian media. This media does something very fundamental in reporting cases of sexual violence, namely siding with the ...victim. The narrative does not present itself. This research confirms that Tirto.id builds the narrative of partiality at the micro, meso, and macro levels. This research uses a qualitative approach which is analyzed using a descriptive approach. Researchers collected data by digital observation and interviewed two key figures in the coverage of sexual violence on Tirto.id in 2017-2019. Using the theory of Shoemaker and Reese's hierarchy of influences, this article explains how the influence of gatekeepers at five levels makes Tirto.id a medium that can be referred to in reporting cases of sexual violence. This media does not only report cases, but further seeks to encourage the birth of a policy to prevent and handle cases of sexual violence.
In creative industries, a producer’s choice to use specific cultural practices is often driven by considerations of industry-specific notions of creativity and artistic vision. Creative producers ...claim autonomy over which practices are deemed desirable or legitimate, creating resistance to influences from outside the industry, such as from social movements. This study proposes that in such contexts, externally-driven change depends on the role of prominent gatekeepers. We consider how shifts in their discourse translate and amplify external social movement pressures for producers. We further argue that higher-status producers respond more to the changing discourse of these gatekeepers, to whom they are more tightly connected. This leads to a dynamic that is counterintuitive in the context of creative industries in which higher-status producers, who can benefit most from preserving the status quo, show greater responsiveness to external pressures when translated through gatekeeper discourse. Our empirical analysis uses a unique data set related to a prototypical contested practice: fur use in high-end fashion. These findings highlight the complex role of gatekeepers in creative industries and indirect pathways through which external social movements drive change.

•Firms developing an intermediary role connecting international and domestic networks are more innovative.•These intermediary firms, or international gatekeepers, need specific relational ...structures.•Gatekeepers develop constrained domestic relationships to control their relationships.•They search for partners in the domestic market that are central to sources of knowledge.
This research evaluates how firms develop an intermediary role, connecting their international experience with knowledge provided by the domestic network. These firms act as international gatekeepers, providing valuable knowledge about distant markets to their partners in the domestic network. By adopting a network perspective, we mapped from whom the firms obtain knowledge or the kind of relationship that each firm establishes with other members of the network, disentangling how the gatekeeper can, in fact, integrate international and domestic networks. Empirical evidence indicates that gatekeepers develop a domestic network based on closed relationships with domestic partners that have central positions but are not a real threat for them.
Given the substantial impact of the Internet and social media on the contemporary process of news selection, this article studies the current role of news agencies as agenda-setters in global news ...reporting. With a focus on the foreign-reporting of Latin America within the prestigious national press in Germany, we analysed the articles’ authorship from four sources: two market-leading German dailies – ‘Süddeutsche Zeitung’ and ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ – the weekly ‘Der Spiegel’ and, the alternative newspaper ‘tageszeitung’ (taz). The corpus comprises 3831 articles published between 2000 and 2014. In addition, eight (semi-structured) interviews with German correspondents in Latin America were conducted to comprehend their relationship with the editorial offices and the indirect use of wire services. We observe that not only is the agency-copy low (8.9%) when compared with other world regions, but direct agency use has also been declining. However, further indicators show that the thematic orientation remains powerful. Moreover, the interviewees confirm the agencies’ impact on their work.
Sunu Thomas has described a research study in which she gained access through a community health worker to members of the community seeking treatment for infertility. One of the research participants ...who had undergone such a sensitive treatment and her family were concerned that the community health worker's presence during the interview would breach the confidentiality of their health information. In this commentary, I will discuss the issues of balancing accessibility versus confidentiality, and of coercion in the process of approaching community members through gatekeepers of the community.
In the Japanese Buddhist canon, the heavenly sovereigns belong to the fourth class of Buddhist deities — after the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and light kings. They are the largest group. Sculptures are ...distinguished by the complexity of plastic forms, decorativeness, and expression. In Japanese iconography, the appearance of Buddhist characters was transformed according to ethnic requirements; their attributes, costumes, and poses changed. The heavenly sovereigns, with soft faces reminiscent of bodhisattvas, were endowed with formidable features in Japan; secular attire was changed to the attire of warriors. Other deities, initially considered warlike, acquired a peaceful appearance. Four heavenly sovereigns (shitennō) should be singled out as the most famous — Tamonten, Jikokuten, Zōchōten, Kōmokuten. They hold weapons in their hands. For Kōmokuten, in his fight against ignorance, the word serves as a weapon, and he holds a scroll-sutra and a brush. In addition to them, Bonten, Taishakuten, Bishamonten became recognized. They have great physical and spiritual strength and appear in majestic poses. Bishamonten acts as a warrior-protector but is also a deity who bestows mercy on everyone. The warrior Benzaiten took on the traits of femininity. Kichijōten is known as the goddess of wealth and happiness. The cohort of heavenly sovereigns belong to the guardian deities of Buddhist law — Shūkongōjin and Kongōrikishi. They are akin to guards located in the niches of temple gates. Sacred sculptures demonstrate the martial spirit with a powerful physique, facial expressions, hand gestures, military armor. Initially static, the sculptures acquired expressiveness of movement due to the position of arms and legs. The article considers the most artistically significant sculptures to trace the process of improving the stylistic means of sculpting Japanese-Buddhist images, to reveal the features of grotesque works, and to expand knowledge about Buddhist temple sculpture.
Cyclodextrins tethered onto a mesoporous silica nanoparticle via disulfide stalking are effective gatekeepers not only to entrap guest molecules in the pore but also to release the guest in response ...to glutathione (GSH). The PEGylated nanocontainers also exhibit efficient GSH‐mediated release of doxorubicin in cancer cells. Our approach offers unique applications for multifunctional delivery systems.
