This paper presents the results of an empirical study of price dispersion in homogeneous goods markets. Modern economic theory suggests that inevitable asymmetries of information in markets lead to ...an equilibrium in which price dispersion is present even when goods are perfectly homogenous. In this paper we present an empirical analysis in which we employ both cross-sectional and time-series data gathered directly from Pricegrabber.com, one of the most popular and comprehensive online shopping/price-comparison sites on the Internet. In particular our analysis focuses on (i) the effect that the number of firms offering a good has on price dispersion, (ii) the informational value to the consumer of using the Pricegrabber website, and (iii) the persistency of price dispersion over time.

This paper examines legal and policy issues raised by changes in payment methods related to the rise of the Internet. The two major changes -- the rise of P2P systems like PayPal, and the rise of ...Internet billing systems to replace the use of paper bills and checks -- both involve new intermediaries that facilitate payments made by conventional payment systems. The paper first discusses how those systems work. It then discusses problems in the framework currently used to regulate those systems in the United States, which has not been updated to protect consumers from the special problems those systems raise. Finally, the paper considers problems with the potential shift of payments services from the heavily regulated banking industry to new and unregulated Internet-related startups. The paper considers a variety of strategies for producing a level field of competition between banks and the new entities and at the same time providing adequate protection for the consumers that use the systems in question.
A unique longitudinal study of the technical communication patterns of 184 engineers in a high technology research and development laboratory centers in the activities of technology gatekeepers. This ...two-step flow of technical information follows the literature as well as results from prior studies. Gatekeepers span the organizational boundary in the transfer of technology from outside the laboratory, while facilitating the distribution of technical information to colleagues within the organization. Sociometric data are analyzed over a five-year period with respect to changing organizational structures, new technical assignments and alterations in group composition. Despite these dynamic changes, the data reveal consistent results in gatekeeper identification and technical information flows.
When designing automated systems that make decisions about when to allow or deny interruptions, the methods of professional interruption mediators are an important source of information. ...Administrative assistants are, by the nature of their jobs, expert interruption mediators. They make decisions every day about whether to allow interruptions to the person they support. We have conducted a series of interviews with administrative assistants whose ability has been publicly recognized. Based on their responses, we present a production-rule model of the decision process they use when deciding whether to deliver interruptions to the person they support.
The "Information Age" (or Revolution) is in full swing. The importance of information to our society today is equal to that of the "Machine Revolution" or the "Computer Revolution." Changes in our ...society and in the information world are just as dramatic. The information age gives librarians a unique advantage as professionals who understand how information is organized and can be retrieved. Because of the unique knowledge that library and information science professionals possess, we must accept the role of "gatekeepers" and "stewards" to this vast network of information resources, services, and systems. Providing access to legal information for all members of today's culturally diverse society is, and rightly should be, a major concern and responsibility of the law library profession. Legal information specialists are essential partners in the legal system and play a major role in the provision of that information to all citizens. Diversifying the profession of librarianship has been an issue since the 1970s. 1 Why is it important to discuss the issue of diversity in libraries? Why is it important to have a diverse population of legal information professionals? It is important because meeting the historical mission that defines the profession -- providing services and resources to information users -- now, more than ever, requires addressing the information needs of a multicultural population. And in order to do this, there must be a diverse population of information professionals. What Does Diversity Mean? R. Roosevelt Thomas, president of the American Institute for Managing Diversity and an ...
