Harmony has become a major challenge for modern governance in the twenty-first century because of the multi-religious, multi-racial and multi-ethnic character of our increasingly globalized ...societies. Governments all over the world are facing growing pressure to integrate the many diverse elements and subcultures which make up modern pluralistic societies. This book examines the idea of harmony, and its place in politics and governance, both in theory and practice, in Asia, the West and elsewhere. It explores and analyses the meanings, mechanisms, dimensions and methodologies of harmony as a normative political ideal in both Western and Asian philosophical traditions.
The book argues that in Western political thought - which sees politics as primarily concerned with resolving social conflicts and protecting individual rights - the concept of harmony has often been neglected. In contrast, since earliest times harmony or 'he' has been a profound theme in Confucian thought, and current leaders of many East Asian governments, and the Chinese government, have explicitly declared that the realisation of a harmonious society is their aim. The book also assesses how harmony is pursued, jeopardized or deformed in the real world of politics, based upon empirical analysis of a variety of different cultural, social and political contexts, including: China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Denmark, Latin America and the Scandinavian countries.
It shows how harmony as an organizing concept can help to promote new thinking in governance, and overcome problems of modern-day governance like distrust, adversarial conflicts, hyper-individualism, coercive state intervention, and free-market alienation. It also discusses the potential problems posed by the pursuit of harmony, in particular in the grave threat of totalitarianism, and considers how these risks could best be mitigated.
The amplified development in science and technology has made the lifestyle of human beings fast-paced but much easier at the same time when compared to the previous eras. It is also notable that man ...has turned the impossible into possible with such advanced technology in various fields such as medicine, education, commerce, and so on. Human beings find it hard to communicate with their family members, friends, and peers because of their hurried mechanical life. Under such circumstances, it is obvious that man does not find time to harmonize with nature. The ancient Hindu writings portray nature as God and emphasize the fact that the worship of nature by humans and treating other living beings with respect maintained the ecological balance. Climate change and the proliferation of numerous pathogens are currently the greatest worries. Such threat-posing viruses not only place human lives in peril but also upset the ecosystem's balance. This paper analyses the select text Mahabharata which is both an ancient literary text and a religious book to highlight the fact that the current ecological imbalance is the result of human indifference to nature. The study throws light on the narratives found in the select text to argue the same and puts forth the measures to attain environmental harmony.
We test common sense psychology of intragroup relations whereby people assume that intragroup respect and ingroup prototypicality are positively related. In Study 1a, participants rated a group ...member as more prototypical if they learned that group member was highly respected rather than disrespected. In Study 1b, participants rated a group member as more respected by other group members if they learned that group member was prototypical rather than unprototypical. As a commonsense psychology of groups, we reasoned that the perceived relationship between prototypicality and intragroup respect would be stronger for cohesive groups compared to incohesive groups. The effect of intragroup respect on perceptions of prototypicality (Study 2a & 2c) and the effect of prototypicality on perceptions of intragroup respect (Study 2b) were generally stronger for participants considering cohesive groups relative to incohesive groups. However, the interaction effect of prototypicality and group cohesion on intragroup respect did fail to replicate in Study 2d. In Studies 3, 4a, and 4b we manipulated the relationship between prototypicality and intragroup respect and found that when these variables were in perceptual harmony participants perceived groups as more cohesive. The results of eight out of nine studies conducted are consistent with the prediction that people make inferences about intragroup respect, prototypicality, and group cohesion in a manner that maintains perceptual harmony.
Job autonomy serves as an effective catalyst for passion and engagement in the workplace. However, the rapid advancement of information technology has greatly facilitated observational monitoring, ...which has the potential to diminish the benefits of job autonomy. Drawing upon self-determination
theory, our study explored the mediating role of harmonious passion for work in the relationship between job autonomy and work engagement, as well as the moderating role of observational monitoring in the relationship between job autonomy and harmonious passion for work. Findings from a two-wave
survey conducted among incumbent employees (1 = 281) revealed that harmonious passion for work partially mediated the relationship between job autonomy and work engagement. Further, when employees perceived a high level of observational monitoring, the positive impact of job autonomy
on harmonious passion for work was weakened. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are thoroughly discussed.
This paper aims to show a way of approximating between liturgical studies and sacramental theology, trying to undo a too formal separation between the two sciences. The paramount cause is to be found ...at the request of Sacrosanctum Concilium, starting from the link between the two to achieve a greater and more fruitful participation of those faithful to the sacraments. In the words of Card. Ratzinger, this request has not been fully met. The dichotomy and relationship between the notions of theoria and praxis in both sciences are presented as the need for a solid foundation or philosophical frame of reference with a metaphysical or realistic background, attending to the problems raised by the International Theological Commission in the document on “The Reciprocity between Faith and Sacraments in the Sacramental Economy” (1999). The pathway is open, some solutions are proposed, and an attempt is made to show the importance of this subject for the understanding of man himself and his Christian life.

Hawai‛i remains the only state that is officially bilingual, has required mediation before foreclosures, celebrates an Islam Day, prohibits discrimination based on credit history and breastfeeding, bans smoking until the age of 21, disallows plastic bags, has declared an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2045, and has adopted many other measures that lead the world. This book explains how developments in the Aloha State, which have provided leadership to the United States, may be copied elsewhere, primarily based on the technique of reverse cultural engineering, which is the unrecognized basis for legal systems around the world.
The mutual reception of the Eucharist is a key issue in contemporary Christian unity. As a landmark document in Christian unity, the Lima document provides a profound exposition of the Eucharist. ...According to this article, eucharistic communion in the Lima document is expressed in three themes: “Communion with Christ”, “Communion of the Faithful”, and “Meal of the Kingdom”. Within these three themes, there are three groups of relationships: the relationship of mutual participation between the faithful and Christ, and the relationship of “demonstrate” and “effect” between the Eucharist and the oneness of the Church. Moreover, in the connotation of the banquet, there is the relationship of “foretaste” between the Eucharist and the Kingdom of God. Further, in my opinion, the concept of “eucharistic communion” is developed into a “theology of harmony”, namely, “the harmony between heaven and humans”, “the harmony between people and people”, and “the harmony between heaven and earth” in the Lima document.
This paper studies the jen-yi orientation and the essential structure of horizontal coordination and vertical hierarchy embodied implicitly in the I-Ching. By embedding the I-Ching's jen-yi axis of ...centrality and mutuality in the chi-tao WR network, the system of chi-tao jen-yi axis is created to embrace simultaneously the Confucian doctrine of jen-yi and the Taoist tradition of the self and nature. That is, in the systemic sense, from the basis of chitao culture or Type I culture, I-Ching jen-yi axis of centrality and mutuality is created. Furthermore, implicitly by embracing this I-Ching axis as its essential core structure, the system of jen-yi human activism or Type I institution is constructed. Thus, a traditional I-Ching type of harmony and human activism is instituted by injecting the vital energy of the axis of chi-tao jen-yi into human organization. For this system of harmony and human activism, a high-level active state of strategic continuity is reached when the systemic structure is complete and the minds of human elements are bright, enlightened, and in quiescence.
