In this paper a masonry baroque church by Antonio Galli Bibiena in Villa Pasquali is analyzed using a multidisciplinary approach. The importance of this monument is due to the prestige of its ...architect and to the peculiar system of masonry perforated vaults, which is an unicum in architectural history. Nevertheless, until now this church has not been studied, but historical data and significant crack patterns have pointed out its high vulnerability. The first step related to the knowledge of the building consists of the historical record of archival documents, which allow for the identification of the vulnerable elements. An accurate geometric survey is carried out with Terrestrial Laser Scanning in order to detect the complex three-dimensional geometry of the structure and crack patterns. Finally, a three-dimensional finite element model of the entire structure is developed and a comparison between the numerical results and the damage survey is performed.
The seminar ‘Critical Approaches to the Modern and Contemporary Anglophone Romance Novel (From A Room with a View to Fifty Shades of Grey)’ was held at the Department of English of University of ...Basel in the Winter term of 2020. Articulated over fourteen weeks, the seminar introduces the students to the romance genre, following the development of the Anglophone romance novel from the beginning of the last century to the contemporary period. The syllabus is designed around a parallel exploration of primary texts alongside critical studies. The main goal is familiarizing students with the definitions, development, and cultural significance of popular romance fiction, educating them on the waves of scholarship on romance fiction, and exploring and problematizing the complex relationship between popular literature and literary scholarship. I share this report with the main intent of offering a platform for debate and the additional one of preserving and celebrating a truly unique and satisfying experience, professionally as well as personally. This report is also meant as a token of my gratitude to all the students who have attended both seminars and have, through their efforts and contributions, and despite the restrictions due to the pandemic, concurred to their success.

"A Native American rejoinder to Richard White and Jesse
Amble White's California Exposures. "- Kirkus
Reviews Rewriting the history of California as
Indigenous. Before there was such a thing as ..."California,"
there were the People and the Land. Manifest Destiny, the Gold
Rush, and settler colonial society drew maps, displaced Indigenous
People, and reshaped the land, but they did not make California.
Rather, the lives and legacies of the people native to the land
shaped the creation of California. We Are the Land is the
first and most comprehensive text of its kind, centering the long
history of California around the lives and legacies of the
Indigenous people who shaped it. Beginning with the ethnogenesis of
California Indians, We Are the Land recounts the
centrality of the Native presence from before European colonization
through statehood-paying particularly close attention to the
persistence and activism of California Indians in the late
twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The book deftly
contextualizes the first encounters with Europeans, Spanish
missions, Mexican secularization, the devastation of the Gold Rush
and statehood, genocide, efforts to reclaim land, and the
organization and activism for sovereignty that built today's casino
economy. A text designed to fill the glaring need for an accessible
overview of California Indian history, We Are the Land
will be a core resource in a variety of classroom settings, as well
as for casual readers and policymakers interested in a history that
centers the native experience.
Bayesian hierarchical regression (BHR) is often used in small area estimation (SAE). BHR conditions on the samples. Therefore, when data are from a complex sample survey, neither survey sampling ...design nor survey weights are used. This can introduce bias and/or cause large variance. Further, if non-informative priors are used, BHR often requires the combination of multiple years of data to produce sample sizes that yield adequate precision; this can result in poor timeliness and can obscure trends. To address bias and variance, we propose a design assisted model-based approach for SAE by integrating adjusted sample weights. To address timeliness, we use historical data to define informative priors (power prior); this allows estimates to be derived from a single year of data. Using American Community Survey data for validation, we applied the proposed method to Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data. We estimated the prevalence of disability for all U.S. counties. We show that our method can produce estimates that are both more timely than those arising from widely-used alternatives and are closer to ACS' direct estimates, particularly for low-data counties. Our method can be generalized to estimate the county-level prevalence of other health related measurements.
Cartographic visualization of past changes in ownership and management of real estate provides a basis for historical research, decision-making, and political discourse. Surveys associated with land ...title deeds represent unique and legally valid geographic records of historical boundaries, including those of some Spanish-Mexican land grants in the American Southwest that are currently administrative subdivisions of state. Accurate representation of land grant boundaries that were surveyed during the nineteenth century is problematic due to imprecise instrumentation, error of record, and uncertainty in landmark location. This study assesses the utility of coordinate points from US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "brass-cap" monuments (cadastral points) for cartographic reconstruction of three New Mexico land grant surveys that exhibit distinct geographic characteristics. Findings reveal discrepancies with respect to land ownership maps produced by the BLM and provide insight to decisions made during surveying. These reconstructed boundaries are also compared to boundary maps produced by the BLM, based on comparisons with the original surveys and relative to known boundary markers. This study highlights the practical importance and potential scholarly applications of reconstructing geographic boundaries of politically active community land grants in a contemporary context.
Introduction
Emerging infectious diseases are increasingly recognized as a global threat to wildlife. Pandemics in amphibians, caused by the fungal pathogen
Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis
(
Bd
), ...have resulted in biodiversity loss at a global scale. Genomic data suggest a complex evolutionary history of
Bd
lineages that vary in pathogenicity. Africa harbors a significant proportion of global amphibian biodiversity, and multiple
Bd
lineages are known to occur there; yet, despite the decline of many host species, there are currently no described
Bd
-epizootics. Here, we describe the historical and recent biogeographical spread of
Bd
and assess its risk to amphibians across the continent of Africa.
Methods
We provide a 165-year view of host-pathogen interactions by (i) employing a
Bd
assay to test 4,623 specimens (collected 1908–2013); (ii) compiling 12,297 published
Bd
records (collected 1852–2017); (iii) comparing the frequency of
Bd
-infected amphibians through time by both country and region; (iv) genotyping
Bd
lineages; (v) histologically identifying evidence of chytridiomycosis, and (vi) using a habitat suitability model to assess future
Bd
risk.
Results
We found a pattern of
Bd
emergence beginning largely at the turn of the century. From 1852–1999, we found low
Bd
prevalence (3.2% overall) and limited geographic spread, but after 2000 we documented a sharp increase in prevalence (18.7% overall), wider geographic spread, and multiple
Bd
lineages that may be responsible for emergence in different regions. We found that
Bd
risk to amphibians was highest in much of eastern, central, and western Africa.
Discussion
Our study documents a largely overlooked yet significant increase in a fungal pathogen that could pose a threat to amphibians across an entire continent. We emphasize the need to bridge historical and contemporary datasets to better describe and predict host-pathogen dynamics over larger temporal scales.
This article is an extended version of my lecture on a history of the Symposium on Stochastic Systems Theory and Its Applications (SSS) delivered at the 50th Anniversary meeting on November 1, ...2018 (Katayama, 2018). It is shown why and how the Symposium was launched in Kyoto 1968; this is a part of early history of automatic control in Japan. Also, activities of SSS for the past 50 years are briefly reviewed chronologically from my personal point of view.
Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
This survey paper is devoted to the description of the results by M.M. Djrbashian related to the modern theory of Fractional Calculus. M.M. Djrbashian (1918-1994) is a well-known expert in complex ...analysis, harmonic analysis and approximation theory. Anyway, his contributions to fractional calculus, to boundary value problems for fractional order operators, to the investigation of properties of the Queen function of Fractional Calculus (the Mittag-Leffler function), to integral transforms’ theory has to be understood on a better level. Unfortunately, most of his works are not enough popular as in that time were published in Russian. The aim of this survey is to fill in the gap in the clear recognition of M.M. Djrbashian’s results in these areas.
For same purpose, we decided also to translate in English one of his basic papers 21 of 1968 (joint with A.B. Nersesian, “Fractional derivatives and the Cauchy problem for differential equations of fractional order”), and were invited by the “FCAA” editors to publish its re-edited version in this same issue of the journal.

In the paper, the authors present the history of stereology development in Poland from the 1930s until now. The authors concentrate on the talented scholars whose hard work, dedication, and ...enthusiasm contributed to popularizing stereological methods of quantitative assessment. From Hugo Steinhaus to now, the evolution and increase in popularity of stereology is briefly shown. The most significant achievements are described in more detail.
