Dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the birth of Alexey N. Gerasimov, one of the initiators of Fractional Calculus in Solid Mechanics.
In the first part of this survey we provide a brief sketch of ...his life. In the second part, the scientific contributions of the Soviet mechanician A.N. Gerasimov are reviewed.
Editorial Note. In a survey 28 recently published in this journal, Sect. 5, we the authors have mistaken the first name of Alexey Gerasimov with the incorrect name Andrey. This was due to unsuccessful attempts to find it unabbreviated in the available literature and by queries among colleagues. Some Internet sources (in Russian language) gave us the first name of another, also Soviet scientist in Mechanics. We do apologize for this fault.
The archive is traditionally considered the counterpart of the library, the one storing records, the other housing "books." There is evidence, however, that this institutional division of labor ...reflects certain historical and social constellations. The present volume addresses the question of this complex interrelationship with case-studies from an impressive variety of ancient, traditional, and living cultures.

The series publishes monographs and collective volumes contributing to the emerging field of manuscript studies (manuscriptology), which includes disciplines such as philology, palaeography, ...codicology, art history, and material analysis. SMC encourages comparative approaches, without geographical or other limitations on the material studied; it contributes to a historical and systematic survey of manuscript cultures, and provides a new foundation for current discussions in Cultural Studies.
Preserving the authenticity of historical monuments is an inseparable part of restoration activities that has always been asserted by the international principles of historical preservation. However, ...the local condition of historical sites may influence such a primitive intention of restorers. While historical documents are appropriate sources which can provide restorers with the real condition of ancient structures in the course of time, investigation through these precious materials is a time-consuming process and the reliability of these old evidences is, itself, a challenging issue. The Italian Institute for Middle and Far East (IsMEO) missioned long-term restoration activities in Persepolis between 1964 and the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Generally, this institute is praised for this series of projects. In this paper, the author questions the historical authenticity of restoration activities missioned by this institute in a structure so-called The Gate of All Nations. Indeed, the restoration of this structure was influenced by the 2500th anniversary of the Persian Empire, which was held in Persepolis in 1971. By tracing the context of historical evidences and presenting a method for obtaining the authenticity of these documents, this paper demonstrates a new perspective towards the arrangement of a stone-made capital, which ornaments the uppermost part of a re-erected ancient column.
This contribution explores the Slovene view of Turks through an analysis of non-periodical printed matter from the 16th century and of newspaper articles published in Slovene lands from the 18th ...century to the present. This journalistic view was shaped by the historical experience from the time of the Turkish incursions. An extensive corpus of materials reveals an ambivalent attitude to Turks in the Slovene lands. On the one hand, journalism — under the influence of the Habsburg state framework and hence the Western political and historical discourse — portrays them in an extremely negative way as enemies of Christendom. On the other, as early as the 19th century liberal politicians in Slovene lands pointed out that such views were outdated and did not make sense. In the contemporary period, stereotypical thinking is yielding to intercultural dialogue.
The article informs about a research of an early modern malt house in Chanovice chateau (Klatovy district). The malt house was analysed during renovation works in 1996–8. The multi-disciplinary ...research included a research of written sources, an architectural and historical survey, use of available iconographic sources, an archaeological research, an archaeobotanical analysis of a sample of found carbonised grains and an anthracology of the same sample. The archaeological research and the architectural and historical survey revealed a uniquely and completely preserved malt house originating in the 16th century and destroyed probably in the 19th century. The archaeobotanical analysis of a sample from the surface of a malting floor discovered the prevalence of partly sprouted caryopses of oat (Avena sp.) with an admixture of other field crops (barley, wheat, pea). The weed admixture was formed mainly by winter crops indicators which do not normally grow in oat. On the basis of these results the analysed sample can be interpreted as a residue of oat malt with an admixture of waste after barley and wheat-rye malt refining. The anthracology made it possible to reconstruct the range of firewood used for malt drying (oak prevailed) and the remains of the malt house equipment destroyed by a fire (charcoals of the kiln floor).
This paper is based on recently recovered daily catch and effort data from the Algarve traps (south of Portugal) during the 1898−1900 period. These 18 traps targeted the two migrations of bluefin ...tuna, entering and leaving the Mediterranean Sea, each year during a period between mid April and the end of August. Their bluefin catches were significant, corresponding to average yearly catches of 61 000 bluefin, i.e., approximately 7900 t. Migration dates and durations towards and away from the Mediterranean Sea were estimated based on the daily catch per unit effort (CPUE) by the traps. Migration patterns were very stable during these three years. The entry migration took place over an average of 42 days, and the return lasted 53 days. Daily catches show large waves of tunas passing during the two migratory phases. It can be hypothesised that each of these waves of tuna spent about 52 days in the Mediterranean Sea, and that each group was stable and consistent during their arrival and return migrations. Migration trajectories along the Algarve coast can be estimated from the daily CPUEs of the different traps. They appear to be different between the arrival and return migrations. The daily data per trap show that most traps caught entering bluefin at quite low CPUE, whereas only a few traps were efficient for catching the returning bluefin, but with much larger catches and CPUEs. The analysis of catch and CPUEs during the entering and leaving phases allowed us to conclude that the catchability and fishing mortality of the bluefin stock in the Algarve trap fishery was much larger during the return migration. Additional daily data from other traps, both historical and contemporary, should be collected and analyzed in order to provide more comprehensive results on the patterns and changes in migration, stock structure and stock exploitation rate.
