What happened to the human soul in contemporary theories of preaching? The field of homiletics shows a wide variety of themes, approaches, perspectives, and theologies. Somewhere between the social ...critique, in postcolonial and post-human approaches, and sense-making, in cultural and experiential approaches, the issue of humanity re-emerges. This essay inquires whether and how it might be possible to re-envision preaching as a practice of care for the soul. The essay closes with a homiletical agenda in the form of three conditions for retrieving the soul in homiletics, a hermeneutical, a rhetorical, and a theological condition.
This paper aims to successively present approaches to German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s thinking in the Romanian research area and to retain a series of milestones of his ample theological ...vision that could be relevant to the culture of an Orthodox preacher. I believe that the example of Bonhoeffer’s life and work are positive challenging models for the pastoral Orthodox thinking, due to his homiletic vision of life, somehow comparable with the vision of some theologians, who gave good Christian testimony during the difficult times of Romanian and European history. I dare to assert that Bonhoeffer’s thoroughness to elucidate the terminology of Christian preaching and to deal with specific topics of theology of reality that is active and directed to the service of a neighbor, as well as his manner of eschatologically embracing the Christian life, creates paths for the education of dialogue with Orthodoxy.
Abstract
Although Theodore the Studite is primarily known as a monastic leader and champion of icon-veneration, he was also a prolific homilist and hymnographer. This aspect of his literary heritage ...is discussed from the perspective of the theological debates during the time of Theodore the Studite's life - not only the Iconoclastic Controversy which repeatedly surfaced in his writings, but also the debate on the predetermination of the terms of human life. A focus will be made on the extent the turbulent events of his life and polemics he was engaged in made an impact on his homiletical and liturgical works.

This article is a theological analysis of African American preaching as a genre of Christian discourse. After first recognizing the particular influences of African culture, American slavery, other ...religious traditions, and the role its practitioners have played in defining its traditions and cultural form as sacred speech, this article explores its nature, function, and scope, and gives a brief genealogical account of African American preaching in North America. Following this historical treatment, this article discusses contrastive hermeneutical perspectives on biblical interpretation, theological emphases (e.g. God, salvation, eschatology, suffering, human freedom, etc.) privileged by its practitioners, and then details rhetorical approaches germane to its communal influence, social relevance, and theological shaping within contexts of Black religious life and beyond. As a theo-rhetorical discourse esteemed for its persistent calls for justice, ecclesiastical reform, spiritual redemption, and moral and ethical responsibility, this article will also consider contemporary trends, theories, and innovations on the horizon in African American homiletic theory and practice.
This paper traces the major shifts that have taken place in the field of homiletics over the last century, focusing especially on the formation of the “New Homiletic,” a reversal of the movement of ...preaching from deduction (essay-like) to induction (story-like). Next, the paper engages the so-called poststructural turn in literary theory and philosophy, articulating the ways that these developments challenge the movement of homiletics. Lastly, in critical conversation with the history of homiletics as well as the impact of poststructural theory, this paper offers a new way of conceiving the movement of preaching as neither deductive nor inductive, but conductive.

Feminism’s contribution to homiletics so far has arguably been restricted to exploring gender difference in preaching. In 2014, however, Jennifer Copeland identified a need not merely to ‘include ...women “in the company of preachers” but to craft a new register for the preaching event’. This article considers what that new register might be and how it might be taught in the academy. It defines preaching as ‘the art of engaging the people of God in their shared narrative by creatively and hospitably inviting them into an exploration of biblical text, by means of which, corporately and individually, they might encounter the divine’ and proposes that in both the Church and the Academy, women’s voices are suppressed by a rationalist hegemony. For the stories of women to be heard, a new homiletic is needed, in which would-be preachers first encounter themselves, then the Bible as themselves and finally their congregation in communality. Findings of researchers in practical preaching discover that women preachers are being influenced by feminist methodology, while the teaching of preaching is not. In order to achieve a hospitable preaching space, it is proposed that the Church and the Academy work together towards a new homiletic.
Bringing methodology and theory closer Development and challenges in South African homiletics. The homiletic landscape in South Africa is rich and varied. In this contribution, we attempt to paint ...with broad brushstrokes this landscape. We write as practical theologians with a shared love for homiletics, but also with an interest in doing what we preach in terms of research and teaching. Put differently, we argue in the light of existing literature that there should be congruence between theories we advance, and methodologies we employ. We dwell on themes such as decolonisation, justice and reconciliation, poverty and inequality that are characteristic of our homiletical landscape. We conclude with the thought that as Christianity in South Africa grows and preachers increase in number, so do the opportunities for empirical academic involvement in preaching. However, the occasion also poses a challenge for academics engaged in homiletics, namely, to practise what they preach by bringing theory and method in a closer relationship.Contribution The article engages current homiletical research in South Africa by means of a literature study, specifically highlighting the challenges and opportunities posed to the discipline of Homiletics within a postcolonial South African context, and at ecumenical faculties of Theology. These challenges and opportunities are especially important for a discipline such as Homiletics in South Africa with its strong Protestant and Reformed roots, to reflect on future methodologies pertaining to research and teaching.
This study focuses on Michail Lučkaj, prominent Carpatho-Rusyn intellectual and church official of the Mukachevo eparchy. Besides his scientific activity, Lučkaj dedicated his time to pastoral ...activities in Uzhhorod and Italy. After seeing a lack of homiletic literature that could be instrumental in pastoral work in the Mukachevo and Prešov eparchies (present-day Slovakia) Lučkaj wrote a two-volume book entitled Cerkovné Besedy. The second volume can be found in the repository of the library at the University of Prešov in Prešov (Slovakia). Michail Lučkaj prepared sermons according to the Eastern Church’s liturgical calendar. These sermons reflect author’s vast philosophical, theological, and Biblical knowledge. A sermon we chose to analyse in the presented article has also a deep personal and existential dimension proving that Canon Lučkaj was a very spiritual man indeed.
