When philosophers address personal identity, they usually explore numerical identity: what are the criteria for a person's continuing existence? When non-philosophers address personal identity, they ...often have in mind narrative identity: Which characteristics of a particular person are salient to her self-conception? This book develops accounts of both senses of identity, arguing that both are normatively important, and is unique in its exploration of a range of issues in bioethics through the lens of identity. Defending a biological view of our numerical identity and a framework for understanding narrative identity, DeGrazia investigates various issues for which considerations of identity prove critical: the definition of death; the authority of advance directives in cases of severe dementia; the use of enhancement technologies; prenatal genetic interventions; and certain types of reproductive choices. He demonstrates the power of personal identity theory to illuminate issues in bioethics as they bring philosophical theory to life.

Background & Aims: We aimed to determine neural correlates of olfactory detection and identification and analyze associations between cognitive function and olfactory identification or detection in ...very mild amnestic patients. Methods: We recruited 70 patients with chief complaints of memory impairment diagnosed as amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer’s disease (AD) with a clinical dementia rating of 0.5. Olfactory detection and identification were assessed using T&T olfactometry. A voxel-wise correlation analysis of gray matter volume and olfactometry scores was performed. We also analyzed correlations between neuropsychological results and olfactometry scores. Results: A significant negative correlation was observed between detection scores and nucleus accumbens and left parahippocampal gyrus volumes and between identification scores and orbitofrontal, right frontal, and right anterior temporal cortex volumes (p<0.001). No significant correlation existed between detection and cognitive assessment scores. Identification score was significantly correlated with the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Part word recall score (r=0.305, p=0.01). Conclusions: Olfactory detection and identification dysfunction were attributable to impairments in different regions in MCI and very early AD; the former was attributed to the olfactory circuit, while the latter to neocortices. The dysfunction of identification of olfactory information was associated with episodic memory in those patients.

It demonstrates how the ...relationship between ethno-religious migrants, nation, and citizenship are shaped by the traumatic experiences of forced displacement and integration into new communities and national imaginaries. The book also examines broader historical trends that have precipitated migration from Iraq, and shaped existing networks into which these women integrate in North America. While informed by research into the limited archival documentary record on Iraqis in North America, the book is first and foremost a study of gender and memory that centers women's oral histories. It also examines how contemporary debates on global citizenship and religious feminism resonate for the individual. By historicizing the process by which ethno-religious and ethno-national communities become fractured and remade, the book explores the expectations and realities of women as the supposed biological and cultural reproducers of the nation.
