Risk assessment is a systematic and iterative process, which involves risk analysis, where probable hazards are identified, and then corresponding risks are evaluated along with solutions to mitigate ...the effect of these risks. In this article, the outcome of a risk assessment process will be detailed, where a large industrial robot is used as an intelligent and flexible lifting tool that can aid operators in assembly tasks. The realization of a collaborative assembly station has several benefits, such as increased productivity and improved ergonomic work environment. The article will detail the design of the layout of a collaborative assembly workstation, which takes into account the safety and productivity concerns of automotive assembly plants. The hazards associated with hand-guided collaborative operations will also be presented.
This research is about development of a set of models and tools collectively based on, and illustrating, a new competency we call "sustainability network theory" or "SNT". SNT intends to reflect and ...model complex aspects of industrial networks, including interconnections between environmental, economic and social aspects, in order to support identification of causal loops, help prioritize conflicting factors, and facilitate intervention at the right levels. SNT, in turn, is based on our evolving understanding of underlying network system concepts and science. In addition to theoretical development, a SNT model will be developed for the electronics/information and communications technology ("ICT") industry with the goal of understanding how regional policies and incentive programs can affect the global sustainability performance (environment and social) of the industry.
Aged fossil-fired power plants are on the great increase in Japan, and the importance of preventive maintenance (PM) increases for their steady operations. A plant consists of a wide variety of ...mechanical and electrical components. Various kinds of severe failures inherent in these components and their occurrence probabilities are different. A system fails when the total suffered damage exceeds a peculiar level, i.e., these components have their peculiar damage levels. The PM plan should be established, considering such levels of plant components. In this paper, kinds of peculiar cumulative damage levels are considered, and a system fails when the total damage exceeds these damage levels. The PM is performed when the total damage exceeds the managerial one . The expected cost per unit time between maintenances is secured, and the optimal managerial level which minimizes it is analytically discussed.

Material and energy flows within and between the societal systems and the natural ecosystem result in the depletion of natural resources and threaten the capacity of nature to assimilate wastes and ...emissions. In this paper, the aim is to compare the material and energy flows of nature to these same flows in an industrial system. The ecosystem material and energy flows are divided into four categories: matter (biomass), nutrients, energy and carbon. For directing the flows in industrial systems toward the operational model of an ecosystem, interrelated goals within each category are presented.
This paper attempts to define a framework for the risk analysis study through the industrial system design in small and middle-sized industries. In an industrial system design process the designers ...optimize technoeconomic aspects of the plan, respecting safety guidance and standards. In spite of the importance of risk analysis, it is generally forgotten through the design process because risk analysis is time and cost consuming. We present some common risk analysis methods. Also we develop a sample and effective technique to identify the most critical factors that influence the safety of the industrial system, and to increase attention on safety and actions undertaken to produce safer design processes.
La majeure partie des travaux sur les problèmes d’ordonnancement se placent dans le contexte où les ressources sont disponibles en permanence. Ce qui en réalité n’est pas toujours le cas. Nous nous ...plaçons dans le contexte d’indisponibilités connues ; nous nous intéressons plus particulièrement aux problèmes de type job shop avec des périodes d’indisponibilité flexibles et des tâches pouvant éventuellement être interrompues par les périodes d’indisponibilité. L’intégration de ces contraintes rend les problèmes d’ordonnancement nettement plus difficiles à résoudre. La flexibilité que nous considérons peut être relative à au moins l’un des points suivants : déplacement de la période d’indisponibilité dans une fenêtre de temps, modification de la durée de la période d’indisponibilité, interruption d’une tâche par une période d’indisponibilité, ensuite reprise avec une éventuelle pénalité.Dans cette thèse, nous avons proposé des modèles mathématiques pour le problème. En plus de la résolution des problèmes considérés, le but de ces modélisations est de permettre d’analyser l'impact des différentes contraintes et d'évaluer la qualité des méthodes approchées que nous proposons. Ces dernières permettent de construire très rapidement un ordonnancement en se basant sur des règles de priorité. Les solutions sont aussi utilisées pour notre approche basée sur la génération de colonnes. Cette approche s’adapte bien à différents fonctions objectif et permet d'intégrer relativement facilement plusieurs contraintes. De nombreuses expérimentations ont été menées pour valider les méthodes proposées.
In most of the machine scheduling literature, resources are assumed to be continuously available which is not always true. We deal with the context of unavailability known a priori; we are particularly interested in job-shop scheduling problems with flexible unavailability periods and tasks that can eventually be interrupted by unavailability periods. Integrating these constraints increase the complexity of the scheduling problems. We deal with flexibility that is related to at least one of the following points: moving the unavailability period in a time window, modification of the duration of the unavailability period, interruption of a task by an unavailability period, then resumed with a possible penalty.In this thesis, we propose mathematical models for the problem. In addition to the resolution of the considered problems, the aim of this modeling is to allow for the analysis of the impact of different constraints and evaluation of the quality of the approximate methods and the column generation approach we develop. The approximate methods construct in very short time a schedule based on priority rules. The solutions are also used in our column generation approach. This approach adapts well to various objective functions and allows relatively easily for the integration of several constraints. Many experiments have been performed to validate the designed methods.
There are several research projects ongoing to apply cloud computing to industrial systems. The main focus of them is real-time performance of virtual machines (VMs) since it is important to ...guarantee a time-critical feature of industrial systems. However, there is another important issue that how much computing resource (CPU, memory, etc.) should be allocated to each VM which runs processes of an industrial system. In this paper, we propose a resource management method which manages VM resources with millisecond precision. In the proposed method, resource usage is measured and predicted, considering several microseconds allocation delay of Xen. Our experimental results show that the proposed method can guarantee 99% operation timing with higher CPU utilization in comparison with conventional resource management methods.
