The purpose of this paper is to extend the research on consumer repurchase intention, perceived value, and perceived risk into the realm of the peer-to-peer economy, specifically in the context of ...Airbnb. A total of 395 surveys were collected in Canada and the United States. The results showed that perceived risk negatively impacts Airbnb consumers' perceived value and repurchase intention while perceived value positively enhances their repurchase intention. Interestingly, price sensitivity was found not to reduce customers' perceived risk but can improve their perceived value and positively influences them to repurchase the Airbnb products. Perceived authenticity was found to have a significant effect in reducing Airbnb consumers' perceived risk and positively influencing their perceived value. Electronic word-of-mouth has a positive effect on repurchase intention as well as perceived value whereas it negatively affects perceived risk. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed and future study directions are offered.
This paper is concerned with the problem of synchronization for inertial neural networks (INNs) with heterogeneous time-varying delays (HTVDs) through quantized sampled-data control. The control ...scheme, which takes the communication limitations of quantization and variable sampling into account, is first employed for tackling the synchronization of INNs. A novel Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) is constructed for synchronizing an error system. Compared with existing LKFs by the largest upper bound of all HTVDs, the proposed LKF is superior, since it can make full use of the information on the lower and upper bounds of each HTVD. Based on the LKF and a new integral inequality technique, less conservative synchronization criteria are derived. The desired quantized sampled-data controller is designed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness and conservatism reduction of the proposed results.
Ryokans (Japanese inns) that have been having difficulty attracting guests will improve their management by accepting foreign visitors to Japan after the end of COVID-19 pandemic. This study finds ...the attractiveness of Japanese inns to foreign visitors of Japan by analyzing and comparing reviews posted in the Japanese and English language by guests of the top 20 “Japanese inns popular among foreigners” on Tripadvisor (2020). As the result, the attractiveness of Japanese inns to foreign visitors to Japan are Japanese-style rooms, Japanese food, tatami mats, yukata (Japanese summer kimono), gardens, and open-air hot spring baths, which are not special to Japanese people. Based on these findings, I proposed ways for inns under severe business situation to satisfy foreign visitors, drawing on the other successful cases of accepting foreign visitors to Japan.
Researchers have recently begun to explore residents’ perceptions of short-term vacation rental (STVR) from both qualitative and quantitative approaches, but there is still a need for strong ...theoretical underpinnings to support this growing body of research. This study addresses this gap through applying a theoretical perspective that combines Social Exchange Theory and Weber’s Theory of Formal and Substantive Rationality to assess residents’ attitudes toward STVRs in the US city of Savannah, Georgia. Results from 384 resident surveys revealed that support for STVRs was a function of both the costs and benefits associated with STVRs, as well as perceived social and psychological empowerment from STVR development. These findings highlight the need for regulatory approaches that ensure STVRs do not infringe on residents’ sense of community and that STVR activity reflects the values and norms of residents so that STVR visits induce resident’ pride in their neighborhoods.
This article mainly addresses the problems of fixed-time stabilization(FTS) and fixed-time projective synchronization(FTPS) for the chaotic inertial neural networks(INNs) with mixed delays. Unlike ...the previous works, the results of FTS and FTPS are constructed for the chaotic INNs by means of direct approach instead of reduced-order way, which are more intuitive and concise. Furthermore, by designing effective Lyapunov functionals and novel feedback controllers, we obtain sufficient condition to respectively ensure FTS and FTPS of the delayed chaotic INNs, which settling times of FTS and FTPS do not depend on any initial values of the investigated systems. Until now, very few works are reported on FTS and FTPS for the delayed chaotic INNs via non-reduced-order way. In addition, the proposed FTPS are more generalized than the conventional synchronization and anti-synchronization. At last, some simulation results and applications are listed to expound the correctness of the derived criteria.
Recently, the sharing economy has made a disruptive incursion into the tourism industry. Companies like Airbnb or Wimdu have successfully developed platforms that grant access to accommodation in ...private homes. However, it seems that conflicts with locals have arisen in different destinations. This study provides an explanatory model to show how the perception of the impacts of the activity influences residents’ attitudes and support. The model was examined using a sample of 1,088 residents in Tenerife (Spain). Results confirm that resident support is directly and positively affected by their perception of the social and cultural impacts, and especially by the economic impacts. It has not been possible to prove the influence of their perception of environmental impacts. Evidence has been gained that perceptions strongly depend on whether locals benefit personally from the activity, and to a lesser extent on their attitude toward the sharing economy and on the state of the local economy.
This article focuses on nonmonetary peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation networks, examining the way in which personality traits, emotional solidarity factors, and technology-related perceptions affect ...the inclination to participate in these networks. To test the theoretical framework, a structural equation model is validated, based on a representative online survey of German consumers (N=600). The findings confirm the explanatory power of the model components considered that directly or indirectly impact individual usage intention. A group analysis distinguishes between the guest and host perspective, providing further insights into the antecedents of the inclination toward P2P accommodation networks. Based on the study results, the present article develops managerial implications and suggests avenues for future research.
Tea on the terrace takes the reader on a journey up and
down the Nile with famous archaeologists and Egyptologists.
Spending time with these fascinating men and women at their hotels
and on their ...boats, the book reveals that a great deal of
archaeological work took place away from field sites and museums.
Arriving in Alexandria, travellers such as Americans Theodore
Davis, Emma Andrews and James Breasted, and Britons Wallis Budge,
Maggie Benson and Howard Carter moved on to Cairo before heading
south for Luxor, the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes.
The book follows them on their journey, listening in on their
conversations and observing their activities. Applying insights
from social studies of science, it reveals that hotels in
particular were crucial spaces for establishing careers, building
and strengthening scientific networks, and generating and
experimenting with new ideas. Combining archaeological tourism with
the history of Egyptology, and drawing on a wide array of archival
materials, Tea on the terrace takes the reader behind the
scenes of familiar stories, showing Egyptologists' activities in a
whole new light.
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to compare customer perceptions of hotel and peer-to-peer (e.g. Airbnb) accommodation advantages and disadvantages and examine their influence on customer ...satisfaction and repurchase intentions. The advantages of each accommodation type are conceptualized through perceived travel experience authenticity, whereas the disadvantages are evaluated through the risks associated with staying at each accommodation type, including product performance risk, time/convenience risk and safety and security risk.
Design/methodology/approach
A cross-sectional survey was designed and disseminated to gather the data necessary to fulfill the study objectives. A total of 391 usable responses were collected for a multi-group analysis of the structural model designed to test the proposed relationships.
Findings
The multi-group comparison revealed similarities between the peer-to-peer (Airbnb) and hotel guest structural models. Model testing revealed a strong positive relationship between satisfaction and repurchase intention. Perceived authenticity was identified as a statistically significant satisfaction predictor for both accommodation types. Time/convenience and product performance risks were found to be insignificant predictors of guest satisfaction, while safety and security risk appeared to be statistically significant only in the Airbnb sample.
Research limitations/implications
This study’s recruited sample represented a higher concentration of younger travelers, and, therefore, might only be generalized to the corresponding US traveler group population. Additionally, samples recruited via Amazon’s MTurk may be subject to self-selection bias as any other non-probability samples. Consequently, further research with a larger and more diverse sample is recommended.
Practical implications
It is recommended for both hotels and Airbnb to strengthen the authenticity of their accommodation offerings to provide a better guest experience and increase consumer satisfaction.
Social implications
To develop the authenticity component, Airbnb hosts and hotels may offer local experiences to their customers, where guests would be able to engage with the community and to see and feel how the city lives. Such partnerships may not only improve the traveler experiences but also support the local community and strengthen the ties between local businesses.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature by advancing understanding of peer-to-peer (Airbnb) versus hotel accommodation consumer preferences. This study offers relevant theoretical constructs for assessing both accommodation types’ advantages and disadvantages.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive analysis of dynamic pricing by Airbnb hosts.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses attribute and sales information from 39,837 ...Airbnb listings and hotel data from 1,025 hotels across five markets to test different hypotheses which explore the extent to which Airbnb hosts use dynamic pricing and how their pricing strategies compare to those of hotels.
Findings
Airbnb is a unique and complex platform in terms of dynamic pricing where hosts make limited use of dynamic pricing strategies, especially as compared to hotels. Notwithstanding their limited use, hosts who own listings in high-demand leisure markets, manage entire places, manage more listings and have more experience vary prices the most.
Practical implications
This study identified a great need for Airbnb to encourage dynamic pricing among its hosts, but also warned of the potential perils of dynamic pricing in the sharing economy context. The findings also demonstrated challenges for hotel managers interested in actionable information related to Airbnb as a competitor.
Originality/value
This is the first Airbnb study to use a comprehensive set of data over a continuous period in multiple markets to look at a number of listing and host factors and determine their relation with dynamic pricing strategies.
