The Laurence and Lynne Brown Democracy Medal, presented by the McCourtney Institute for Democracy at Penn State, recognizes outstanding individuals, groups, and organizations that produce innovations ...to further democracy in the United States or around the world. Elections are the bedrock of any democracy, but they are under attack in the United States. State legislatures are moving to limit voting rights and seize control of election administration, candidates are refusing to accept election results, and antidemocracy forces are sowing lies and encouraging political violence. The States United Democracy Center is fighting back by equipping state and local officials, law enforcement leaders, and prodemocracy partners with the tools and resources they need to protect free, fair, and secure elections. For this important work, its cofounders are the recipients of the 2022 Brown Democracy Medal. States United was founded during the 2020 election and continues to be led by Joanna Lydgate, former chief deputy attorney general of Massachusetts; Norman Eisen, former ambassador to the Czech Republic and special assistant to President Barack Obama for ethics and government reform; and Christine Todd Whitman, former New Jersey governor and Environmental Protection Agency administrator.

Il ...s’agit, dans un premier temps de proposer un recensement des photographies de presse qui rendent compte de la révolte populaire qui secoua Barcelone et sa région entre le 26 juillet et le 2 août 1909. L’approche thématique et formelle privilégiée dans la suite de cette enquête permet de dégager les principales lignes de force qui traversent un corpus composé de près de 250 clichés et montre comment, dès sa naissance, la photographie de reportage participe à la fabrication d’un récit orienté des événements.
For President Donald Trump’s most committed Christian devotees—those with ears to hear—his rise to power was prophesied, and the 2016 victory was miraculous. Prophets again foretold re-election in ...2020. These charismatic Trump supporters tended to come from outside the main denominations, and when the electoral college swung towards Joe Biden, the results were not accepted. In rejecting the election, they became fellow travellers with more overtly militant and conspiratorial groups—sometimes sharing a stage with them. This article describes the discourse of prophetic populism from 2011 to 2021—focusing in particular on the three months from the 2020 election to the storming of Capitol Hill to the inauguration of Joe Biden. Although Trump repeatedly says, ‘Promises Made, Promises Kept’, these prophetic promises did not materialise—leading some to try to force God’s hand. This article explores the reaction to three consecutive disappointments that took their toll on prophetic populism: the declaration of Joe Biden as president-elect in November 2020, the certification of his victory in early January 2021 and the inauguration later that month. It demonstrates the power of a relatively new force in conservative politics, the flexibility of beliefs in divine involvement and the resilience of these beliefs in light of weighty disconfirming evidence.
A bold new interpretation of Nat Turner and the slave rebellion that stunned the American South
In 1831 Virginia, Nat Turner led a band of Southampton County slaves in a rebellion that killed ...fifty-five whites, mostly women and children. After more than two months in hiding, Turner was captured, and quickly convicted and executed.In the Matter of Nat Turner penetrates the historical caricature of Turner as befuddled mystic and self-styled Baptist preacher to recover the haunting persona of this legendary American slave rebel, telling of his self-discovery and the dawning of his Christian faith, of an impossible task given to him by God, and of redemptive violence and profane retribution.
Much about Turner remains unknown. His extraordinary account of his life and rebellion, given in chains as he awaited trial in jail, was written down by an opportunistic white attorney and sold as a pamphlet to cash in on Turner's notoriety. But the enigmatic rebel leader had an immediate and broad impact on the American South, and his rebellion remains one of the most momentous episodes in American history. Christopher Tomlins provides a luminous account of Turner's intellectual development, religious cosmology, and motivations, and offers an original and incisive analysis of the Turner Rebellion itself and its impact on Virginia politics. Tomlins also undertakes a deeply critical examination of William Styron's 1967 novel,The Confessions of Nat Turner, which restored Turner to the American consciousness in the era of civil rights, black power, and urban riots.

How do citizens respond to extreme violations of democratic institutions, such as the January 6th, 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol? Using an online survey of 900 employed respondents conducted ...January 5–9, 2021, I find that those interviewed just hours after the insurrection were about 10% points less likely to identify as Republicans, reported greater dislike for Donald Trump, and expressed less attachment to conservatism even controlling for prior levels of party identification. Self-reported Trump voters interviewed after the insurrection were also less likely to identify as Republican and expressed a less favorable view of Donald Trump. The findings only reflect the short-term reactions of employed respondents but are robust to alternative specifications and the very narrow temporal window of the analyses helps to isolate the impact of the insurrection. These results offer evidence in the on-going debate over how to interpret the events of January 6th, 2021.
In the aftermath of a violent attack, questions of definition arise. News framing research has shown that the words chosen to define a given event can affect attitudes and decision-making, even when ...only a single word is varied. This study analyzes public discourse in the aftermath of the January 6 U.S. Capitol attacks to better understand which labels predominated and how different labels were explained/justified. We pair computer-assisted content analysis with qualitative textual analysis to identify patterns in public commentary during the week following the attacks. Results indicate that initial news coverage favored “protest(s)” as a descriptor, but “riot,” “attack(s),” and “insurrection” gained traction as the week unfolded. Many labels were also definitively applied and deployed to contextualize the attacks, providing a degree of contrast to framing norms. The results are considered in relation to ongoing debates over definitions of domestic terrorism and related crises, as well as normative considerations central to the maintenance of U.S. democracy.
Contemporary newspaper reports and de-classified archival sources are used to revisit an infamous episode in the long, contentious, and very often violent encounter between colonial rule and the ...Muslim Moplah peasants. The significance of the Moplah rebellion is re-stated as being relevant and revelatory to all peoples, despite the timelessness of war, as it marks the emergence of protracted (asymmetrical) guerrilla tactics as the dominant mode of anti-colonial warfare. Moreover, the long series of suicide attacks by the Moplahs, and the punitive justice, summary executions, and abuse they experienced as prisoners at the hands of the colonial government, are all appallingly familiar today as part and parcel of ‘modern warfare’. Analysts, educators, policy makers and researchers are invited to review the events that constitute the Moplah rebellion (primarily as they were portrayed by newspaper reporters) in order to grasp the ‘new realities’ the conflict gave rise to, and to appreciate the wider international significance of what happened in Malabar (South India) at that time. Rather than speculate on the psychological and sociological facets of Moplah resistance and the politics of a mass movement, as in the case of the prevailing discourse on the Khilafat movement, new insight into the imbrications of the history of the Moplahs is provided by situating the events of the Moplah rebellion of 1921-22 against the contemporary background of militant Islamism and the on-going ‘War on Terror’.
The rebellion that broke out in the Northwest Province (Severo-Zapadnyi Krai) of the Russian Empire in January 1863 and spread over the former lands of the Commonwealth of the Two Nations is not a ...new topic for historians. The involvement of women in the insurrection of 1863 has also been studied for a long time, with the first research appearing even before the Second World War. So far, Polish, Belarusian, and to some extent Lithuanian, researchers have raised questions about the forms and methods of women’s protests in this insurrection, and the changes in their social role, and analysed women’s memories and images of women. This article is the first to address memoirs of the January insurrection written by women from the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania who observed the events of the insurrection in these lands. The women’s memoirs are analysed here as a whole, in order to reveal some common features. In contrast to previous studies that have looked at women’s memoirs of the rebellion in order to answer questions about the course of the rebellion, the theme of deportations, or women’s ability to balance social activities and family responsibilities during the insurrection, this paper raises the more general question of what women did and did not write about in their memoirs about the insurrection between 1863 and 1864, and why.
La Comandanta Ramona y otras insurgentas del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) en el sur de México, supieron, desde las montañas, encontrar las palabras para cambiar el mundo aunque el ...mundo las quisiera recluidas en la sombra. Con su pensamiento, con sus pasos, subvirtieron el orden simbólico de las mujeres indígenas para mostrarnos otras formas de ser mujer en el tiempo actual. El presente trabajo aborda la trascendencia de las Comandantas Ramona y Esther y la Mayor Insurgente Ana María, dirigentes del EZLN, quienes se convirtieron en palabra, en símbolo, para reivindicar otra forma de vivir.Al insurreccionarse contra el orden existente, se posicionaron desde otro lugar para mostrar las realidades de las mujeres indígenas y desde ahí proponer nuevas formas de relacionarse con los hombres de su comunidad y con el poder dominante. Hablaron al mundo desde el rostro oculto por el pasamontañas y en ese ocultamiento abrieron otro horizonte de visibilidad para las mujeres indígenas, pobres e ignoradas. Hoy su herencia, entre ellas, la Ley Revolucionaria de Mujeres, abre el camino para las jóvenes indígenas contemporáneas en una nueva manera de pensar, sentir y estar en el mundo.
La Comandanta Ramona et d'autres insurgés de l'Armée Zapatiste de Libération Nationale (EZLN) dans le sud du Mexique ont su, depuis la montagne, trouver les mots pour changer le monde même si le monde souhaitait qu’elles restassent dans l'ombre. Leur pensée, leurs pas ont renversé l'ordre symbolique des femmes autochtones pour nous montrer d'autres manières d'être une femme, aujourd’hui. Le présent ouvrage traite de la transcendance des commandants Ramona et Esther et du major Insurgente Ana María, dirigeantes de l’EZLN, qui sont devenues la parole, le symbole de la défense d’un autre mode de vie. Lorsqu'elles se sont rebellées contre l'ordre existant, elles se sont positionnées à un autre endroit pour montrer les réalités des femmes autochtones et à partir de là, ont proposé de nouvelles façons de nouer des relations avec les hommes de leur communauté et avec le pouvoir dominant. Elles ont parlé au monde le visage caché par un passe-montagnes et en se dissimulant, elles ont ouvert un nouvel horizon de visibilité pour les femmes autochtones, pauvres et ignorées. Aujourd'hui, leur héritage, y compris La Loi des Femmes Révolutionnaires, ouvre la voie à une nouvelle façon de penser, de ressentir et d'être dans le monde, pour les jeunes femmes autochtones contemporaines.

O presente trabalho trata da transcendência dos Comandantes Ramona e Ester e Major Insurgente Ana María, líderes do EZLN, que se tornaram uma palavra, um símbolo, para reivindicar um outro modo de viver. Quando se rebelaram contra a ordem existente, posicionaram-se de outro lugar para mostrar as realidades das mulheres indígenas e a partir daí propuseram novas maneiras de se relacionar com os homens de sua comunidade e com o poder dominante. Eles falavam para o mundo do rosto escondido pela máscara de esqui e naquela ocultação abriram outro horizonte de visibilidade para as mulheres indígenas, pobres e ignoradas. Comandanta Ramona and other insurgents of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in southern Mexico, knew, from the mountains, to find the words to change the world even if the world wanted them in the shadows. With their thought, with their steps, they subverted the symbolic order of indigenous women to show us other ways of being a woman at the present time. The present work deals with the transcendence of Comandantes Ramona and Esther and Major Insurgente Ana María, leaders of the EZLN, who became a word, a symbol, to vindicate another way of living. When they rebelled against the existing order, they positioned themselves from another place to show the realities of the indigenous women and from there propose new ways of relating with the men of their community and with the dominant power. They spoke to the world from the face hidden by the ski mask and in that concealment they opened another horizon of visibility for indigenous women, poor and ignored. Today, her legacy, including the Revolutionary Women's Law, opens the way for contemporary young indigenous women in a new way of thinking, feeling and being in the world.
On January 6, 2021, rioters stormed the US Capitol to overturn the Congressional certification of Joseph Biden as the 46th president of the United States. In previous work, the symbolic ...dis/empowerment framework, as a result of sociopolitical context, has influenced health outcomes in certain sub-populations. We examine whether the Capitol Riot corresponds with an increase in mental health symptoms and explore whether this relation differs by individual political party affiliation and/or state electoral college victory. We utilize the Understanding America Study, a nationally representative panel of adults, between March 10, 2020–July 11, 2021. Using fixed effects linear regression, we find a modest increase above expected levels in mental health symptoms immediately following the Capitol Riot. This result holds for Democrats overall, Democrats in Biden states, and when restricting analyses to only states that voted for Biden (or separately, for Trump). Democrats show the greatest increase of mental health symptoms following the Capital Riot, supporting the symbolic dis/empowerment framework as well as notions of political polarization and allegiance. Social and political events of national importance may adversely affect mental health of specific subpopulations.
