Electrocardiography (ECG) in all its forms, from 12-lead ECG to long-term monitoring, is considered, an old and increasingly irrelevant test in this high technology era. This article reviews the ...clinical utility of this tool and argues that the obsolescence is due to an increasing inability to read electrocardiographic tracings. The usual interpretative pitfalls are discussed and a logical approach is proposed with illustrative examples. Finally, the concept of precision ECG is presented and its meaning reviewed.
The purpose of this paper is to show that the last part of the Theaetetus (204-210) can be interpreted in a new way, by a discontinuous and thematic analysis and by referring to the central ...digression of the dialogue. The refutation of the so-called “Dream Theory” is then no longer a dead end. On the contrary it provides results certainly limited but nevertheless consistent. Indeed, through this examination, Socrates analyzes “the whole.” The words πᾶν and ὅλον, designate the general rule of exhaustiveness. It is their common principle. But the two terms have also been differentiated by Socrates in the last section of the dialogue (206c-210b). These positive arguments are used to disqualify a false conception of the totality. All these points ultimately shed light on the central digression in which Socrates brings into conflict the positive activity of the Scientist and the negative activity of the Rhetorician. Basically the “whole” is the secret object of their desire and therefore the hidden stake of their debate.
This paper reports on the findings of a PhD research project that set out to explore how young people leaving out of home care experienced and made sense of their transition to adulthood. Using the ...Biographical Narrative Interpretative Method, in-depth accounts were collected and analysed for eight care leavers. The data suggest that in addition to care leavers living their lives as a series of biographical events, their ‘care career’, they also experience changes in the way they make sense of their lives which form a ‘subjective pathway’. Influenced by the literature on resilience, the research had anticipated that ‘turning point’ events would play a significant role in the young people’s subjective pathways. But the findings show a more gradual, phased shifting of subjectivity. It is suggested that legislation, policy, services and care practices need to facilitate this more drawn out ‘subjective pathway’. Attachment, resilience and humanistic social psychology are proposed as useful theoretical underpinnings for that work.
In Mere Reading: The Poetics of Wonder in Modern American Novels, Lee Clark Mitchell persuasively argues for a critical practice of “slow reading.” His introduction offers a comprehensive account of ...his methods of interpretation, placing them in the context of both past major critical movements and recent interventions in the field (including current debates about “surface reading” and “the new formalism”). The sensitive, illuminating readings of novels by Willa Cather, Vladimir Nabokov, Marilynne Robinson, Cormac McCarthy, and Junot Díaz demonstrate the critical value of this approach. Both Mitchell's theoretical account and his reading practice would have been strengthened, however, by a more sustained treatment of “wonder,” and affect more generally.
This thinkpiece arises from personal reflection on researching 'sexualisation', on the individuals and issues encountered and on elements that were unspoken or more rarely voiced. It suggests that ...the discourse on sexualisation tends to construct an 'other' from which speakers distance themselves, variously defined as 'bad' mothers, sexualized girls, 'unhealthy' sexuality, undesirable or wrong values, an exploitative industry, and so on. The grip that 'sexualisation' has on the public imagination may be due less to the social problems it identifies, and more to how it serves as a repository of disavowed or unacknowledged parts of our (social) selves. Ethically and politically, the paper suggests, we should pay more attention to the relations between self and 'other' constituted in and through the debate about sexualisation.
A fear of childbirth is a reason for a Cesarean section on request without a medical indication. The law for patients' rights in Norway does not give women the opportunity to choose a Cesarean ...section, only the potential to participate in the decision‐making process. This requires cooperation between health professionals and patients. The present study explores the experience of women who had a vaginal birth after requesting a Cesarean section due to a fear of birth. A biographical, narrative, interpretative method was used. Through five women's stories, it is evident that the practice of decision‐making constitutes a challenge for both the women and the health professionals. The importance of a woman's right to be taken seriously, even if she does not want to understand the reason behind her fear of birth, is emphasized. An open mind from midwives and physicians is required, although this seems difficult to achieve.
Objective:
The objective of this study was to explore how Thai women of low socioeconomic status handle their type 2 diabetes.
Methods:
A qualitative interpretative method was used to study 19 women ...with type 2 diabetes in a suburban community in Thailand. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and were analysed using inductive and constructive processes.
Results:
Participants’ lives underwent many changes between their initial diagnoses and later stages when they became adept at handling diabetes. Two themes emerged, which involved (1) the transition to handling diabetes and (2) the influences of the social environment. The first theme encompassed confronting the disease, reaching a turning point in the process of adaptation and developing expertise in handling diabetes. The second theme involved threats of loss of status and empowerment by families. These findings showed that becoming adept at handling diabetes required significant changes in women’s behaviours and required taking advantage of influences from the social environment.
Conclusion:
The process of developing expertise in handling diabetes was influenced by both inner and outer factors that required adjustment to learn to live with diabetes. Furthermore, the reductions found in women’s social statuses when they become patients in the healthcare system might pose a barrier to women of low socioeconomic status becoming adept at handling diabetes. However, the experiences of empowerment received from the women’s families acted as a powerful strategy to strengthen their handling of the disease. To develop accessible and sensitive health care for this population, it is important to pay attention to these findings.
The purpose of this study is to investigate how religious ethics, while retaining its identity, can contribute to political debate and to the understanding of justice. The inquiry addresses these ...issues by focusing on theological perspectives which challenge the solutions offered to these questions by the liberal paradigm. Three kinds of challenges are studied, each of which is represented by one thinker from the Islamic tradition and one from the Christian tradition, in order to enable a comparative perspective on the contributions of religious traditions. The thinkers studied are: 1) modified liberalism, represented by Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im and Duncan B. Forrester; 2) liberationism, represented by Ali Shariati and Gustavo Gutierrez; and 3) radical traditionalism, as developed by Tariq Ramadan and John Milbank. The study is organized around three main questions. First, how can innovative interpretations of religious tradition be plausibly justified? Second, what role should religious arguments and reasons play in the political sphere? Third, what can religious ethics and theological thought contribute to the understanding of social justice? The questions are engaged by means of a critical and reconstructive engagement with the six thinkers. The suggested solutions are assessed in terms of the criteria of authenticity, communicability, and potential for transformation. It is argued that a religious ethic can rely on a tradition without accepting conservative understandings of that tradition. Furthermore, it is argued that the coherence of religious ethics can be made available for public discourse but that the hospitability of the public forum to such contributions needs to be realized through a deepened democratic culture and a critique of power structures which condition perceptions of rationality. While religious ethics do not articulate complete alternative understandings of justice, they articulate contributions by relating justice to human sociality and to transcendence.
Članak nastoji izložiti načela Ricoeurove »podučene egzegeze« u dvostrukom horizontu: horizontu hermeneutičke refleksije kakva se ne bavi gotovim dogmatskim izričajima te horizontu vjere kakva se ...kuša kroz tekstove, istodobno promatrajući tekstove s distance i uvažavajući njihovu unutarnju polifoniju. Takav pristup upozorava na granice različitih interpretativih metoda te mogućnosti njihove konvergencije. Tri figure »podučene egzegeze« o kojima Ricoeur piše - povijesno-kritička, semiotička metoda i metoda povijesnoga istraživanja književnih oblika -prisutne su već i u biblijskoj egzegezi. Svaka od njih ima druge pretpostavke i drugu svrhu: znanstvene egzegeze razlikuju se od eklezijalnoga, konfesionalnoga, a ovaj djelomice i od kerigmatskoga čitanja. Ricoeur uzima u obzir svaki od aspekata, ali ga zanima ponajprije rad samoga teksta, tj. njegova nutarnja dinamika. Ricoeur govori o trima fazama čitanja: čitanje perikopa, intertekstualno čitanje i globalno čitanje. Čitanje perikopa, tj. odabranih dijelova, omogućuje uvid u kerigmatsku, navještajnu dimenziju teksta. U drugoj fazi, intertekstualnom čitanju, perikope objašnjavaju jedna drugu, i to ne samo nadopunjujući se sadržajno ili interpretativno, nego izražavajući istu poruku u različitim književnim vrstama i s različitih aspekata koji tek zajedno tvore i izražavaju smisao poruke. Globalno (globalisante) čitanje Biblije pretpostavlja jedinstvo njezina smisla. Polifonija koja proizlazi iz intertekstualnosti primorava tražiti neku vrstu dominantne teme cjeline. Ricoeur predlaže da se vrata ostave otvorenima za nekoliko modela obuhvatnoga jedinstva kako se ne bi upalo u opasnost ideologiziranja i kako se ne bi dopustilo kanoniziranje pojedinačnih teoloških koncepata koji se žele nametnuti, kao što se svojevremeno bio nametnuo Barthov teološki koncept povijesti spasenja (Heilsgeschichte). Kada istražuje polifoniju diskurzivnih modaliteta Biblije, njezin policentrizam, i raznolikost načina imenovanja Boga; kada zauzima stav protiv krajnjeg dosega teologije povijesti spasenja naspram drugih konstrukcija biblijskih teologija - u svemu tomu Ricoeur doseže egzegezu koja razmišlja o vlastitim granicama. Biblijska poruka do nas dopire kroz niz slojeva interpretacija: odnos govor - pismo, samointerpretacija Pisma, prepletanje naracije i kerigme, teološka i druga tumačenja. Ricoeurova hermeneutika nastoji otkriti značenje teksta kakvo je moguće prije nego što su tekst i analiza bili odvojeni, tj. na razini imanentne, a ne eksplicitne simbolike. Prema Ricoeuru, moguće je teološki koncept raščlaniti do njegove kerigme, a iz krutoga paradigmatskoga čitanja osloboditi njegovu dinamiku.
