Jul. 8--KUWAIT -- Kuwait witnessed many fires yesterday in different locations across the country. The Hawally Governorate had the lion's share of these fires, as an area of 5,000 sq m caught fire ...next to the Hawally fire station on Beirut Street. The site had many illegal residences where 'bachelors' and labourers working in the nearly satellite shops lived. The fire destroyed most of their belongings. Strong winds also helped spread the fire. One fireman broke his hand and another officer was injured due to the smoke and heat. The fire raged for hours. Three fire teams from Hawalli, Mishref and Salmiya participated in fighting this huge blaze -- led by Colonel Adil Shuabi and Colonel Ali Al Jarki.

Lectio praecursoria kasvatusfilosofian väitöskirjaan Adornian Critiques of Reason: Autonomy, Morality, and Education, Itä-Suomen yliopistossa 11.5.2018. Väitöstutkimus osallistuu järjen käsitettä ...koskevaan filosofiseen keskusteluun. Se, miten ymmärrämme järjen, heijastuu tapaan, jolla ymmärrämme itsemme ihmisinä: suhteessa itseemme, toisiin ja ympäristöömme. Kasvatusfilosofian traditiossa järjen käsite on ollut hallitseva, eli järki on usein ymmärretty geneerisenä ja ahistoriallisena. Järjen käsite on ajankohtainen ja tärkeä myös nykypäivän kasvatuksen teorioinneissa. Järjen merkityksen korostaminen on osaltaan vaikuttanut siihen, että myös järjen käsitteelle läheiset autonomian ja moraalin käsitteet usein tulkitaan ja rakentuvat muodollisen järjen käsitteen kautta. Tutkimuksen lähtökohtana on Theodor W. Adornon filosofia. Adornon mukaan järki on partikulaarinen, historiallinen ja materiaalinen. Adornon käsitys järjestä haastaa käsityksen järjestä rationaalisena itsesäätelynä, sekä siihen läheisesti kytkeytyvän kantilaisen yrityksen sovittaa moraali ja autonomia järjen avulla. Adorno ei kuitenkaan kiistä kyseisten käsitteiden välistä yhteyttä: myös Adornon järjen käsite kytkeytyy vahvasti autonomian ja moraalin käsitteisiin. Väitöskirja koostuu kolmesta itsenäisestä, toisiinsa liittyvästä artikkelista, jotka yhdessä tulkitsevat näiden käsitteiden välisiä suhteita. Adornon filosofian mukaisesti, väitöstutkimuksessa järjen käsitettä lähestytään psykoanalyyttisen teorian viitekehyksen kautta: autonomia ymmärretään jännitteisenä ja yhteen kietoutuvana suhteena luontoon ja muihin ihmisiin; moraali tulkitaan paitsi subjektin vaistomaisena ja reflektiivisenä toimintana suhteessa oikeaan ja väärään, myös kykynä vastustaa tarvittaessa normeja. Normien vastustaminen tarkoittaa, että moraali vaatii myös aktiivista ei-identifioitumista vallitseviin moraalisiin ja kulttuurisiin normeihin. Tarkoituksena ei ole kuitenkaan kieltää rationaalisia perusteita moraalisten valintojen, tekojen tai teorioiden arvioinnissa – tavoitteena on pikemminkin argumentoida, että moraalisuus ja autonomia ovat myös paljon muuta kuin rationaalisuus. Väitöstutkimus korostaa kasvatuksellisesti tärkeiden käsitteiden taustalla olevien oletuksien ja arvojen tiedostamista ja analysoimista. Väitöskirja tarjoaa adornolaisen näkökulman kasvatuksen ja kasvatusfilosofian jatkoteorioinneille.
This book is an important text in moral philosophy. It follows from the 1984 book Reasons and Persons, one of the landmarks of twentieth-century philosophy. The book presents a new treatment of ...reasons, rationality, and normativity, and a critical examination of three systematic moral theories — Kant's ethics, contractualism, and consequentialism — leading to a new synthetic conclusion. Along the way the volume discusses a wide range of moral issues, such as the significance of consent, treating people as a means rather than an end, and free will and responsibility. This book consists of four parts. The first part presents critiques of previous work by four of the world's leading moral philosophers. The second part contains responses. The third and longest part is a self-contained work on normativity, and the final part comprises seven chapters on Kant, reasons, irrationality, autonomy — and why the universe exists.
Tarkastelen tässä artikkelissa, miten journalismissa on historiallisesti tulkittu talouskuria, talouspoliittista ideaa, josta on tullut erityisen kiistelty finanssikriisin ja eurokriisin vanavedessä. ...Pohdin artikkelissa kysymystä journalismin historiallisten ammatti-ihanteiden valossa ja käytän aineistona brittiläisen talouslehden The Economistin talouskuria koskevaa kirjoittelua vuosilta 1947–2012. Tukeudun artikkelissa genealogiseen luentaan, jonka avulla tulkitsen lehden talouskurikirjoittelua journalismin historiallisia ihanteita ja tavoitteita vasten. Artikkelissa väitän, että The Economistissa talouskuri saa oikeutuksensa markkinoiden vaatimuksista ja talouden tosiasioista. Talouskuria haastavat ideat näyttäytyvät usein järjettömyytenä, jota ajavat eteenpäin poliittiset paineet tai ideologiset pyrkimykset. Väitän, että lehden tapa käsitellä talouskurin kaltaista poliittista ideaa on ominainen liberaalille ammattijournalismille, joka on historiallisesti pyrkinyt toimimaan julkisena järjen ja yhteisen hyvän äänenä. Hobbes's extreme political views have commanded so much attention that they have eclipsed his work on language and mind, and on reasoning, personhood, and group formation. But this work is of immense ...interest in itself, as Philip Pettit shows in Made with Words, and it critically shapes Hobbes's political philosophy. Pettit argues that it was Hobbes, not later thinkers like Rousseau, who invented the invention of language thesis--the idea that language is a cultural innovation that transformed the human mind. The invention, in Hobbes's story, is a double-edged sword. It enables human beings to reason, commit themselves as persons, and incorporate in groups. But it also allows them to agonize about the future and about their standing relative to one another; it takes them out of the Eden of animal silence and into a life of inescapable conflict--the state of nature. Still, if language leads into this wasteland, according to Hobbes, it can also lead out. It can enable people to establish a commonwealth where the words of law and morality have a common, enforceable sense, and where people can invoke the sanctions of an absolute sovereign to give their words to one another in credible commitment and contract.

This third volume of this series develops further previous treatment of reasons, normativity, the meaning of moral discourse, and the status of morality. It engages with critics, and shows the way to ...resolution of their differences. This volume is partly about what it is for things to matter, in the sense that we all have reasons to care about these things. Much of the book discusses three of the main kinds of meta-ethical theory: normative naturalism, quasi-realist expressivism, and non-metaphysical non-naturalism, which this book refers to as non-realist cognitivism. This third theory claims that, if we use the word ‘reality’ in an ontologically weighty sense, irreducibly normative truths have no mysterious or incredible ontological implications. If instead we use ‘reality’ in a wide sense, according to which all truths are truths about reality, this theory claims that some non-empirically discoverable truths — such as logical, mathematical, modal, and some normative truths — raise no difficult ontological questions. This book discusses these theories partly by commenting on the views of some of the contributors to Peter Singer's collection Does Anything Really Matter? Parfit on Objectivity.
