We prove a short, root-system uniform, combinatorial classification of Levi-spherical Schubert varieties for any generalized flag variety G/B of finite Lie type. We apply this to the study of ...multiplicity-free decompositions of a Demazure module into irreducible representations of a Levi subgroup.
Rita Levi-Montalcini was an extraordinary personality and with her profession she made a tremendous contribution to humanity. Doctor, Nobel laureate for medicine, neuroscientist, she contributed, ...thanks to her research, to improve the knowledge of the nervous system. She discovered the nerve growth factor, which is applied in various fields of neurology, concerning neurodegenerative diseases. She also studied, in relatively newer years, the mechanisms of neuroinflammation. This last is a research that has been developing in recent years and is based on the predominantly anti-inflammatory properties of endogenous substances that able to act not only on diseases of the nerves, neuropathies, on the nerve roots, and radiculopathies but also on migraine and other non-neurological diseases. Her long life was full of positive and negative events. Born in a Jewish family, she lived her life as a young woman through war, Nazi deportations, and the Holocaust. Despite the difficulties, she found time to do research in the medical field, organizing research laboratories with other scholars. She had a difficult life, interspread with pain, destruction, extermination of human beings but also rewarded by scientific discoveries. A “small” woman but a great neuroscientist.
The Nazis’ persecution of the Jews during the Holocaust included the creation of prisoner hierarchies that forced victims to cooperate with their persecutors. Many in the camps and ghettos came to ...hold so-called “privileged” positions, and their behavior has often been judged as self-serving and harmful to fellow inmates. Such controversial figures constitute an intrinsically important, frequently misunderstood, and often taboo aspect of the Holocaust. Drawing on Primo Levi’s concept of the “grey zone,” this study analyzes the passing of moral judgment on “privileged” Jews as represented by writers, such as Raul Hilberg, and in films, including Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah and Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. Negotiating the problems and potentialities of “representing the unrepresentable,” this book engages with issues that are fundamental to present-day attempts to understand the Holocaust and deeply relevant to reflections on human nature.
A presentation of Family Remains, an essay film on the legacy of Fascism in the memory of the author's family, develops a critical reflection on the impact that the longue duree of the regime had ...(and still has) on personal and civic life in Italy. Through archival research, oral history and autoethnography, the film reconstructs emblematic life paths (the exiled anti-Fascist, the good Italian and the repubblichino killed by the partisans) and explores post-war forgetting of family histories. The paper argues for the importance of a history from below, a study of the lived experience (violence, silence, adaptation) and the moral climate and affectivity of the Fascist years to rethink Fascism and the way we remember it. While retracing the roots of Italy's poverty of memory back to Fascism, three issues come to the fore: the question of Fascism's spectacular optics as distinct from its historical visibility; the warped temporality of memory; and Fascism as an anthropological mutation which, by breaking down cultural transmission, became a trans- generational event. Key Words: Fascism, anti-Fascism, memory, violence, shame, essay film, photography, autoethnography, oral history, memoirs.
Blue jeans are globally beloved and quintessentially American. They symbolize everything from the Old West to the hippie counter-culture; everyone from car mechanics to high-fashion models wears ...jeans. And no name is more associated with blue jeans than Levi Strauss & Co., the creator of this classic American garment.
As a young man Levi Strauss left his home in Germany and immigrated to America. He made his way to San Francisco and by 1853 had started his company. Soon he was a leading businessman in a growing commercial city that was beginning to influence the rest of the nation. Family-centered and deeply rooted in his Jewish faith, Strauss was the hub of a wheel whose spokes reached into nearly every aspect of American culture: business, philanthropy, politics, immigration, transportation, education, and fashion.
But despite creating an American icon, Levi Strauss is a mystery. Little is known about the man, and the widely circulated "facts" about his life are steeped in mythology. In this first full-length biography, Lynn Downey sets the record straight about this brilliant businessman. Strauss's life was the classic American success story, filled with lessons about craft and integrity, leadership and innovation.
The paper discusses the similarities between Primo Levi's documentary novel Se questo è un uomo (1947) and his short science fiction story La bella addormentata nel frigo from the collection Storie ...naturali (1966), on the basis of the themes of the novel. The concentration camps form an element of continuity between the novel, which bears witness to the horrors Levi experienced, and the seemingly light-hearted story. There are many parallels between human perversion documented in the novel and the grotesque experiment of the ‘Laboratory of evil’ seen in the fictional work. The story is almost a parody of Auschwitz; dreadful seriousness is converted to comedy. Patricia, the protagonist of the short story, is Levi's alter ego and a caricature of the Sleeping Beauty archetype from the traditional fairy tale.
This paper is based on the contributions of Primo Levi (2004) and Karl Jaspers (2018) to discuss the issue of guilt in Michel Laub's novel Diário da queda (2011). By approaching traumatic experiences through individual memories, which relate to the events of the Second World War, the narrative portrays, among other aspects, the feeling of guilt present in three members of the narrator's lineage. Although it can be understood almost as a family heritage, by going over his own history, as well as of his ancestors', the narrator points out the need to face the pain of the past in order to envision a transformed future. In this paper, we study locally strongly convex centroaffine hypersurfaces with vanishing Weyl curvature tensor and semi-parallel cubic form relative to the Levi-Civita connection of centroaffine ...metric. As the main result, we classify such hypersurfaces being not of flat centroaffine metric. In particular, 2,3-dimensional locally strongly convex centroaffine hypersurfaces with semi-parallel cubic form are completely determined.
