The Song of the Morrow is considered to be the most intriguing of Stevenson’s tales. This tale about the mystery of life and time was issued two years after the author’s death (1896), and now appears ...in a first translation into Polish.
Ctěný a milý pane a příteli, budete mě možná považovat za nevděčníka, protože Vám za Váš tak pěkný a srdečný dopis děkuji až dnes, a za oba obrázky, které si stále dokola prohlížím: ten pevný, ...poctivý a dobrý obličej Vašeho pana otce1 a ten malý dojemný domek, v němž jste se Vy, můj ctěný příteli, narodil.2 Velmi lituji toho, že neumím česky, a tak si nemohu ani jednu z obou zaslaných knih Philomena sancti Bonaventurae3 a deník4 přečíst. Dostaly se mi do rukou tak nádherně a pečlivě zabaleny, jsem velmi rád, že je mám, ale nemám zde nikoho, kdo by mi z nich mohl překládat.
Drawing on Jan Assmann’s interpretation of cultural memory as devoid of any racial/biological component, as well as James Clifford’s repudiation of the notion of cultural purity, the paper redefines ...memory as a mentally configured cultural institution, claiming that any reconfiguration of group identity is an act of symbolic violence. By emphasizing the crucial role that identity plays in understanding the fundamental themes tackled by Chicana literature—patriarchal oppression, racial terror, domestic abuse, sexism, homophobia—, the paper illustrates the extent to which the ethnic-gender binomial, i.e. belonging to a group that faces bias on various levels (femininity, Mexican American genealogy and, sporadically, sexual minority status), stands at the very core of the desire to redefine identity that largely fuels contemporary Chicana prose.

Ačkoli v posledních letech žiji skryta před shonem moderní doby, poštěstilo se mi kdysi dávno nalézt velmi vzácného, oduševnělého přítele nebo mnohem spíše bratra (básníka Otokara Březinu, jenž mne pravidelně zásobuje četbou všeho druhu).
The works of Titus Maccius Plautus and his lively and picturesque lan-guage (sermo famialiaris full of archaisms and colloquialisms but in perfect harmony with the metric norms), were characterized ...by a conspicuous presence of loans from the Greek language and rhetorical figures aimed at highlighting the bizarre traits of the characters and over the centuries they have been a challenge for translators from all over the world. The secret of his success that breaks down times and frontiers consist in the richness and originality of his language that continues to influence every form of artistic expression. In this article the Italian versions that range from the seventeenth to the twentieth century are examined, focusing on the versions of Lodovico Dolce and Pier Paolo Pasolini, mentioning some Polish translations of the work of Plautus (Jan Szczepan Wolfram, Gustaw Przychocki, Zygmunt Węclewski) and coming to the conclusion that the result of the translation of classical texts should be a reasonable balance between those two poles that are called the ancient and the modern.

This article analyses translations of Ep. 5,27 by Marsilius Ficinus (Veritas de institutione principis): the work of an anonymous translator (perhaps Ř. Hrubý) and a later translation by O. Velenský. ...The article also analyses translations of Historia Bohemica by Aeneas Silvius (M. Konáč, 1510, and D. Adam, 1585). The translations are compared with their Latin originals and with each other: the translators’ strategies towards the intended readers are identified, as are the relations between the later translations and the earlier ones. The first Ficinus translation simplifies the ancient realia, avoids Latin infinitive constructions and translates some words with two expressions (multiplication). Velenský imitates Latin grammar in Czech. Konáč adheres to the verbum de verbo method, but substitutes words considered critical by Utraquist readers. Adam translates faithfully, but like the first translator of Ficinus, he uses multiplication and explicates within the translation. The translation style for the more literarily challenging texts is influenced by the translators’/publishers’ estimation of the readers’ skills (this expectation was lower for the vernacular text than for the Latin one).
