•A high CI diversity presented divergences among salespeople about the market understandings.•CI diversity also reduces the positive effects of CI on efficiency.•CI increases ...salespersons' efficiency.•A higher consensus about how salespeople read the market is beneficial to the firm.
Although previous studies support the main effect of a salesperson’s competitive intelligence (CI) on job-related outcomes, little, if any, attention has been given to the mechanisms that moderate this relationship. Drawing on social capital theory, the authors propose that CI diversity (i.e., disparity) diminishes salesperson CI's main effect on efficiency and performance. On the other hand, managers’ tenure in the store amplifies such a relationship. The authors tested the theoretical model using multilevel data collected from managers and salespeople representing 74 wholesales and 175 vendors. The study results demonstrated that the CI-performance link was weakened when there were high CI diversity. The reason is that a high CI diversity presented divergences among salespeople about the market understandings. Whereas, when there are high levels of managers’ tenure, there is an amplified influence of CI on performance. The logic is a communication and dissemination of intelligence to the sales team.

Abstract
This study examines the effect of manager sentiment on conditional conservatism. Manager sentiment refers to widely held beliefs of financial managers about their firms’ future economic ...prospects that are not justified by available economic fundamentals. Manager sentiment is likely to affect conditional conservative reporting because the decision to recognize unrealized economic losses in a timely manner flows from financial managers’ beliefs about their firms’ future cash flow prospects. We predict and find that manager sentiment is negatively associated with conditional conservatism, indicating that firms report less conservatively during periods of high manager sentiment (over‐optimism) and more conservatively during periods of low manager sentiment (over‐pessimism). Moreover, the effects of manager sentiment on conditional conservatism remain strongly negative after controlling for manager overconfidence. We further find that asset write‐offs are lower during high sentiment periods but higher in subsequent periods. Importantly, the manager sentiment effect on conservatism is incremental, and the opposite in sign, to the effect of investor sentiment, which has not been demonstrated in prior literature.

Many nurse managers transition from proficient bedside nurses to leadership roles without formal leadership training. Their new role moves beyond the bedside of affecting an individual patient ...outcome to a position where their leadership behaviors, decisions, and actions impact the staff, patients, and families on a unit and organizational level. While new nurse managers are coached and mentored by their director, there is still an opportunity to provide a more standardized and structured approach to ensure optimal development and outcomes. A Nurse Manager Residency program supports the new leader by providing a forum for education, leadership development, and mentorship to demonstrate the critical components of a successful leader that promote staff engagement, patient experience, and excellence in nursing.

Purpose
The past few decades have produced a number of investigations into the correlation between project managers’ competencies and project success. As a result, competencies lists have become ...extensive “shopping lists.” The purpose of this paper is to define the most important competencies to project success and investigate their correlations.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors surveyed project managers on the importance of 28 project manager competencies to project success. Data were analyzed using univariate and multivariate procedures.
Findings
Data show that communication, commitment and leadership appear as the three most relevant aspects. Multivariate analysis identified seven groups of competencies: leadership, self-management, interpersonal, communication, technical, productivity and managerial.
Practical implications
The results confirm a growing trend toward soft skills and reinforce the need for an update on project management education to fill the gap between theory and practice.
Originality/value
Project manager competencies lists have become too extensive, and the field is in constant change; therefore, this study updates the discussion and downsizes the number of competencies to fewer, more relevant items.
What are the boundary spanning activities undertaken by the Corporate Headquarters (HQ) executives of a Multinational Corporation? We address this question through a five‐year longitudinal case study ...of one company as it shifted from a traditional HQ in one location, to a dual HQ in two locations, to a virtual HQ split across multiple locations. By observing how HQ executives prioritized their time over the course of this transition, we identified four generic boundary spanning activities: two (spearheading and facilitating) focused on making connections across boundaries, two (reconciling and lubricating) focused on overcoming differences in worldview across boundaries. By considering these activities together, and how they vary in importance over time, we show how each boundary spanning activity adds value to the MNC and improves the effectiveness of the internal and external network. An important feature of our study is that we operationalize boundary spanning at the activity level, i.e., in terms of the specific actions taken by corporate HQ executives, to provide a more granular understanding of how boundary spanning works in practice.
