This study attempts to test a well-known model of city manager turnover. We use a Binary TSCS (Time-Series Cross-Section) analysis to address the problem of duration dependence, which typically ...occurs when the assumption is that a turnover decision at a certain point of time is entirely independent of previous decisions in the turnover data. In essence, manager turnover should be understood not as a single event at a given point in time but rather as being affected by the duration of tenure. Our empirical analysis of turnover data from 156 large cities in the United States for the period 1984–1999 indicate that, particularly when the length of manager tenure was controlled for, political push factors had significant effects on city manager turnover that were not detected by means of the ordinary logit analysis. The result on time duration suggests that longer tenure can reduce the likelihood of city manager turnover.
Managers often accompany salespeople to customer meetings, and their presence can be invaluable to the interaction. However, at times, managers may act in ways that are harmful rather than helpful. ...Scant scholarly attention has been allocated to understanding the dark side of managerial involvement. When negative manager behaviors manifest in customer-facing situations, salespeople must understand and mitigate these occurrences to prevent deleterious outcomes. This study conducts a qualitative inquiry of professional salespeople and organizational buyers to uncover the ways customer-facing adverse manager behaviors (CFAMBs) occur and affect sales calls. Specifically, manifestations of manager arrogance, apathy, and awkwardness can negatively affect customer outcomes. In addition, factors affecting the severity of CFAMBs’ impact include timing in the sales cycle, customer status, and pre-, in-, and post-call mitigation strategies. Collectively, the findings advance role theory and theory germane to the salesperson–sales manager interface and provide practical guidance for dealing with CFAMBs.
Research summary: The entrepreneurship literature has extensively studied an individual's decision to found a new venture, but it has little to say about the individual's choice to operate this ...venture personally or hire an agent. This decision is particularly challenging for foreign entrepreneurs, who, in addition to traditional factors, such as agency costs and personal preferences, need to take into consideration the benefits and liabilities of foreignness. Using novel data on foreign entrepreneurial firms and instrumenting for the owner-manager choice with a visa policy change, we find that managing foreign entrepreneurs significantly improve firm performance. Our results further suggest that foreign owner-managers reduce operating costs but have no effect on the firm 's productivity and growth. Managerial summary: Immigrants represent a significant part of the population in the United States and Europe and are often more entrepreneurial than local nationals. However, a person starting a firm in a foreign country faces unique challenges. One important choice that a foreign entrepreneur has to make is whether to operate the firm personally or hire a local agent. Foreign entrepreneurs are often believed to be worse managers because they have limited local knowledge and skills. However, our results point to the contrary: We find that managing foreign entrepreneurs significantly improve firm performance by decreasing firm' operating costs. This happens because foreign owner-managers often have access to unique resources, higher work incentives, and superior management skills acquired at home.
The paper introduces some challenges for a young entrepreneur and manager, who proved to be competent, effective and efficient, who managed, using special approaches and measures for one’s ...enterprise, to maintain the functioning state in a profitable regime, to ensure the resilience of one’s businesses and to benefit from all the legislative facilities granted by the regulation’s incident to the pandemic periods. These facilities came to support both companies as employers and employees who were actually the most affected by the restrictive measures during the analysed period, respectively 2019 – 2020. The issue standing at the basis of the research presented refers to the manner in which the pandemic caused by Covid-19 influenced or not the company Mira Larix SRL, during the years of study. The research approach proposed comes as a continuation of previous publications on the topic of the impact of the pandemic at the level of several types of entities, continuing with the analysis of the context, trends and influences on types of companies worldwide, from the country and from the Caras-Severin county as well as on the chosen SME. The case study was chosen as a research tool, especially because the qualitative research method focused on realities and lived experiences, on certain categories of populations from a certain field of study, helped in getting a real and clear knowledge of the studied subject, analysing the fulfilment of the research main objective - the impact of the pandemic on the company’s performance and the presentation of the uniqueness of the approaches, facts, proposals and recommendations implicitly based on the thematically directed interview and discussions with the manager of the analysed company. Being aware that the approach used for research can to be supplemented and improved, a proposal would be to continue it on other types of economic entities, institutions and other organizations, especially on those operating in Caraș-Severin County, in order learn as much as possible of different managerial practices and try to contribute to the enrichment of the scientific content and the didactic materials in the domain.

The inspiration for writing this paper has been an attempt to answer questions about similarities
and differences - in relation to the western tendencies - of the personal and competence profile of
...contemporary Ukrainian managers. Due to volume limitations, and because in the subject literature there
is a rather precise definition of the contemporary „western manager”, the characteristics of a “western
manager” are not cited in this paper. The paper is devoted solely to the analysis and characterization of
the characteristics of the contemporary Ukrainian manager. This was possible through personal and direct
empirical research. The study consists of two main parts: the background for entrepreneurship in Ukraine
and the profile of the Ukrainian manager.
•A theoretical framework is developed and consolidated for value creation in circular business models.•Social dimension of circular business model is perceived as crucial for value creation.•The ...contextual factors are found to be determining the nature of value creation.•The managerial practices are accounted for mediating the influence of the contextual factors on value creation.•Building sector provides robust opportunities for shared value co-creation.
A circular business model represents a holistic system of co-evolving managerial practices for collective value creation, delivery and capture, which provide solutions for sustainable development. Previous research on circular business models aimed to understand value creation mostly in terms of a single managerial practice or in a relatively isolated manner. In particular, little is known regarding the system of managerial practices that creates value. Accordingly, this study proposes a theoretical framework characterized by a set of managerial practices in connection with relevant internal and external contextual factors for creating value within a circular business model. The framework was used in a specific case of a small medium-sized enterprise (SME) operating in building sector, which can be considered a great example of circular economy put into practice. Therefore, the explorative nature of the case allows for deep probing that helps consolidating the framework. Among the main results, essential outcomes included configuring and adapting the company’s business model to particular internal and external contextual factors; valorization of local waste by harmonizing managerial practices, and socio-cultural and socio-economic settings, as well as sustainable behaviours among the actors of supply chain. This study contributes to the field of circular business models research by adopting a broader, interdisciplinary approach toward the concept of value creation. Further, it provides managers with a roadmap for creating value by enhancing the degree of circularity within a given context.
Highly sophisticated capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) have skyrocketed its popularity across many industry sectors globally. The public sector is one of these. Many cities around the ...world are trying to position themselves as leaders of urban innovation through the development and deployment of AI systems. Likewise, increasing numbers of local government agencies are attempting to utilise AI technologies in their operations to deliver policy and generate efficiencies in highly uncertain and complex urban environments. While the popularity of AI is on the rise in urban policy circles, there is limited understanding and lack of empirical studies on the city manager perceptions concerning urban AI systems. Bridging this gap is the rationale of this study. The methodological approach adopted in this study is twofold. First, the study collects data through semi-structured interviews with city managers from Australia and the US. Then, the study analyses the data using the summative content analysis technique with two data analysis software. The analysis identifies the following themes and generates insights into local government services: AI adoption areas, cautionary areas, challenges, effects, impacts, knowledge basis, plans, preparedness, roadblocks, technologies, deployment timeframes, and usefulness. The study findings inform city managers in their efforts to deploy AI in their local government operations, and offer directions for prospective research.
The rights and duties of the director in entrepreneurial activities are regulated by both the 1994 and 2021 editions of the Law of Georgia “On Entrepreneurs”. The powers assigned to him/her include ...leadership and representation of the entrepreneurial company. The legal relations of the director often goes beyond the scope of corporate law. Accordingly, the rights and duties established by other fields of law apply to him. One of them is the law of insolvency, which provides for the director’s involvement in such a regime as the rehabilitation regime. In the paper, the role of the director is considered within the framework of the regulation of the law of insolvency, the rehabilitation regime, which is regulated by the law of insolvency. In addition to reacting to the imperatively determined action, the law obliges the director to assess the evaluable and foreseeable circumstances and to take appropriate action on it. The topic is relevant and interesting, because in addition to the civil liability towards the director, criminal liability may also be considered. In order to properly discuss the topic provided by the article, the laws on Insolvency Procedings and on Rehabilitation and Collective Satisfaction of Creditors are compared with each other. Decisions/rulings of the general courts of Georgia have been used in the paper in order to clarify the position of the court regarding the issue. And, in certain cases, the legal norms of different countries and foreign language literature are cited in the article for the purpose of making a comparison.
