In recent years, widespread organisational change in large corporations has almost invariably led to work intensification and increased stress for managers. Managing in the Modern Corporation ...explains how and why large companies have changed their organisational structures and philosophies, focusing in particular on how these changes affect the careers of middle managers. Based on in-depth interviews with over two hundred middle and senior managers working in large corporations in the USA, UK and Japan, it shows how the working lives of managers have been subjected to major disruption, involving work intensification and reduced opportunities for career progression. Furthermore, it argues that such widespread overwork and poor treatment of highly skilled and highly motivated staff has created a major international problem that must be addressed. The book presents a range of solutions to this important problem, suggesting that there are possibilities for saner, less brutal organisational environments.
This paper presents a conceptual framework of managerial activities to foster disruptive innovations. Despite wide recognition of managerial role at middle and lower tiers of organization towards ...shaping its long-term strategy, the existing research, so far, has lacked in explicitly explaining the managerial activities directed towards the development of disruptive innovations. Authors explored the extant literature on disruptive innovation theory and identified three phases of the disruption process where managers at the middle and lower tiers can play an active role. The authors named this role of managers as their disruptive innovation activities (DIA). Furthermore, manager's DIA is explored in the context of existing antecedents of manager's strategic activities and a conceptual framework is proposed along with a resource map for future research, in this direction.
This article analyzes the evolution of Consensualism within the contemporary administrative management. The administrative structure of the State, based on the conception of the Welfare State, has ...over time endured some conceptual inclusions that, far from its providentialist feature, add up its content and makes its definition increasingly complex and impregnated with various distinctive concepts. It is thus, that, after verified the evolution of the State, it is suggested the necessary distinction between the burocratic and the responsible ("managerial") models, determining its application within the current structure of administrative management and organizing its concept. What is intended with this analysis of the consensualism is the demonstration of the possibilities of the manager's decisions in order to reach the public interest, exalting its performance ruled for its results and for the effectiveness of the efficiency principle.

The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted how businesses operate, creating high levels of uncertainty for organizational members. Drawing on social information ...processing and implicit leadership theories, we developed and tested a model that explains how middle managers' perceptions of CEO narcissism shape their perceived uncertainty in the workplace, particularly when COVID-19 threatens a firm's survival and growth. Managers' sense of uncertainty leads to their engagement in uncertainty-based coping responses, including laissez-faire leadership (i.e., escape coping) and impression management (i.e., control coping). We collected data from 200 middle managers (Study 1; field survey) and 318 working adults (Study 2; online experiment) in North America and the U.K. and found general support for our model. Our research bridges the gap between micro and macro perspectives and provides novel insights into how perceived CEO narcissism can shape managers' behaviors in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby contributing to the literatures on CEO narcissism, leadership, and crisis management.
Aim
To understand the experiences of hospital nurse managers and assistant nurse managers during the COVID‐19 pandemic in the United States.
Background
Little research has been published about the ...experiences of nurse managers during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Experiences of front‐line nurses have been well documented. This is the first phenomenological study to date in the United States on experiences of hospital nurse managers during the COVID‐19 pandemic.
Design
Phenomenological qualitative approach.
Methods
Thirteen managers, seven nurse managers and six assistant nurse managers were interviewed about their experiences using audio–video teleconferencing and a semi‐structured interview guide. Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research criteria for reporting qualitative research were used.
Results
The four major themes that emerged were as follows: being there for everyone; leadership challenges; struggles, support and coping; and strengthening my role. There were 11 subthemes.
Conclusions
A major focus of nurse managers during the pandemic was psychosocial support of front‐line nurses while at the same time experiencing stress and exhaustion themselves.
Implications for nursing management
More attention on the psychosocial needs of nurse managers, interventions to allay their exhaustion and provisions for readily available support are warranted.
