This study is a quantitative and functional corpus-based study of self-mention in soft science Master theses. One important purpose of this study was to find out the functions of self-mention in soft ...science Master theses. For this purpose, 20 soft science Master theses in four disciplines (Applied linguistics, Psychology, Geography, and Political sciences), were randomly selected out of the library of four American universities. Five Master theses were selected in each discipline, in a period of seven years (2007-2014). The present study analyzed only the discussion section of these Master theses. The quantitative analysis of the corpus showed that the frequency of the various forms of self-mention in soft science Master theses is quite different. Among the analyzed resources, “I” with the frequency of 49 was the most frequently used first person pronouns. Based on Tang and John’s (1999) taxonomy of the discourse roles of personal pronouns, self- mentions were functionally analyzed. The findings of the functional dimension of the present study showed that the most frequent discoursal role of self-mentions in the corpus was the recounter of research process, whereas the least frequent role was originator.
In the Czech Republic, HTA studies are only required for pharmaceuticals. For this reason, many health technology assessment work is being done by academic institution. A number of HTA methods are ...used within student's theses in the Department of Biomedical Technology, the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague. The environment of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering thus contributes to the cultivation of HTA in the Czech Republic and in connection with the field of biomedical engineering interesting works are being created here. There is an effort to create works that have a practical impact, and many works arise in connection with the requirements of practice.
There has been much recent interest in how to help students in higher education develop their generic skills, especially since this is a focus of the Bologna process that aims to standardize European ...higher education. However, even though the Master thesis is the final and often crucial part of a graduate degree and requires many generic skills very little research has directly focused on them. In particular, there is a lack of such knowledge for engineering education programs. In this paper we present results from a survey where we asked 23 students from three different Swedish Universities about which generic skills are needed and developed in a Master thesis project in software engineering. One outcome of our analysis is that there is a lack of understanding on how to define, and thus examine, generic skills in software engineering thesis projects.

In this article, the press coverage of the Spanish Civil War by four German exile papers will be studied, raising the questions why the German left in exile was so much concerned with the conflict ...and how they connected the events in Spain with their own situation. Using Hayden White’s concept of narrative tropes, this article demonstrates how the representations of Spain shifted from a romantic narrative to a tragic narrative, thus rendering Spain, as an imagined space, from a symbol of hope to a symbol of warning and despair. The focus will be put on the exile press coverage of three events: the outbreak of the war, the bombing of Guernica and the failure of the non-intervention committee. Arguing that Spain, as a battleground of international ideologies, was always connected by the Germans in exile to their own circumstances, the article shows that the exile writers were not concerned with the events in Spain as such, nor with the international dimensions of the war. Instead, they defined the Spanish Civil War as an international arena to pursue their own goals: to beat National Socialism and return to Germany.
One of the main elements in Curricular Development within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is to promote ties between Industry and Academia, both in terms of curricular content as well as in ...terms of methodological approach. In this work, synergy between Industry and Academia is analyzed in the joint development of Final Degree Projects and Master Thesis in several engineering disciplines. The overall results show clear benefits in this interaction to students, industry members and faculty members in terms of educative process as well as to enhance potential collaboration opportunities.

Students of online graduate or undergraduate programs are also needed of master or bachelor thesis to get their diplomas. In most of the cases, directors and students must face these processes ...online. However, despite the overall satisfaction with the online learning process, for these works, some students express negative attitudes, such as mistrust and insecurity. Obviously, these negative attitudes are not conducive to learning and student performance. As a result, supervisors are required to minimize the effects of these negative attitudes. Therefore, the monitoring activity is not limited to academic leadership, but also an activity similar to coaching. In this paper, authors investigate what lays behind bachelor and master thesis supervision in online settings. Specifically, authors sought to determine whether academic direction occur while coaching processes. In order to do so, authors applied an open questionnaire to a sample of supervisors. This questionnaire includes questions on four aspects: students' negative attitudes, strategies applied to reduce inappropriate attitudes and to promote good ones, similarities to coaching processes and finally, consideration on the difficulties of online supervision compared with the traditional one in terms of general difficulties, more negative student's attitudes and more effort during supervision. Results show that the majority of the supervisors interviewed had to apply some managerial complements to their duties. These strategies can be considered true coaching processes, although there is not substantial difference between conventional online supervision and traditional supervision of bachelor and master thesis.

The last element in an engineering study course is the thesis. Preparing the thesis the student shows that he/she is able to integrate all knowledge and competencies in one task. The curriculum ...demands that the complexity of the thesis is equivalent to the development status the student should have reached during his studies. Every student has to work on his own thesis. Most of the theses at German Universities of Applied Sciences are down in industry to have an industrial background and the chance for the student to work on a real industrial project to show his first professional work.
