The paper examines how the classical myth of Actaeon was adopted in the post-Renaissance period by two anti-Classicist authors, Bruno and Marino, whose approaches to the myth differ despite their ...common rejection of the Classicist aesthetic paradigm. In one of the sonnets making up Giordano Bruno’s dialogue De gli eroici furori (1585), the Actaeon myth is invested with a new, philosophical meaning, and used to represent a new gnoseological concept. An idyll, on the other hand, included in Giovan Battista Marino’s La Sampogna collection (1620), displays a tendency to hyperliterariness and a taste for surprise effects, proposing a version of the myth which admits a metatextual interpretation. The present study compares each author’s writing practice to their respective poetological positions and analyses it in the light of intertextual references.
Objective: To assess actual practices and in-hospital outcome of patients with acute myocardial infarction on a nationwide scale. Methods: Of 443 intensive care units in France, 369 (83%) ...prospectively collected data on all cases of infarction (within < 48 hours of symptom onset) in November 2000. Results: 2320 patients (median age 68 years, 73% men) were included, of whom 83% had ST segment elevation infarction (STEMI). Patients without STEMI were older and had a more frequent history of cardiovascular disease. Median time to admission was 5.0 hours for patients with and 6.5 hours for those without STEMI. Reperfusion therapy was used for 53% of patients with STEMI (thrombolysis 28%, primary angioplasty 25%). In-hospital mortality was 8.7% (5.5% of patients without and 9.3% of those with STEMI). Multivariate analysis found that age, Killip class, lower blood pressure, higher heart rate on admission, anterior location of infarct, STEMI, diabetes mellitus, previous stroke, and no current smoking independently predicted in-hospital mortality. At hospital discharge, 95% received antiplatelet agents, 75% received β blockers, and over 60% received statins. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors were prescribed for 40% of the patients without and 52% of those with ST elevation. Conclusions: This nationwide registry, including all types of centres irrespective of their size and experience, shows continued improvement in patient care and outcomes. Time from symptom onset to admission, however, has not improved in recent years and reperfusion therapy is used for just over 50% of patients with STEMI, with an increasing use of primary angioplasty.
Substance use among HIV+ individuals can be a barrier to HIV care, resulting in poor health outcomes. Motivational interviewing (MI) is an effective intervention to reduce substance abuse and ...increase HIV-related health. Healthcare workers from various backgrounds can be effectively trained in delivering MI interventions; however, there has been limited evidence that peers can effectively deliver MI interventions with fidelity. Peers have traditionally worked in HIV care settings and represent a valid context for a peer-delivered intervention focused on motivational issues. We trained four peers in MI. In this paper, we describe the intervention, explain the MI training methods, and investigate whether peers can be trained in MI with fidelity. The MI training included didactic instruction, group workshops, and individual feedback sessions. Two of four peers achieved MI treatment fidelity as measured by the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Code Version 3.0. Overall, peers had difficulty using open-ended questions and querying pros and cons, skills thought necessary to elicit change talk. They also tended to give too much direct advice where reflections would have been appropriate. A challenge was training peers to change familiar ways of communicating. Nonetheless, they did well at assessing and highlighting motivation to change. The total training hours (40 h) was long compared with other published MI studies. However, the intervention included several components with two targeted change behaviors. It is likely that peers can be trained in MI with fidelity in less time given a more streamlined intervention. When working with peers who have life stressors similar to the target group, it is important to be flexible in the training.
Maria Eva Duarte De Perón – EvitaThis essay deals with the figure of Eva Perón and her evolution into a white myth, a black myth and a red myth, according to the the temporal frame in which the myths emerged. These myths overlapped with the real story of Eva, who was born on 7 May 1919 in Los Toldon, a province of Buenos Aires, and died as Primera Dama, on 26 July 1952 at the young age of 33.
Abstract Objectives 1. Quantitative description of the adherence to the principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in smoking counseling sessions, 2. Examination of the relation between clients' ...characteristics and the adherence to the principles of MI, and between adherence to the principles of MI and future smoking status. Methods A sample of n = 163 sessions conducted during a randomized controlled trial in testing the effectiveness of a population-based smoking intervention in women postpartum was investigated. Demographic and behavior-related variables were included in a logistic regression to predict adherence to MI. Adherence was measured using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale. Results Of the sessions, 49.4% showed good adherence to MI. The OR of receiving a good MI session was 3.1 for non-smokers in comparison to daily smokers. No other demographic or behavioral variable gained statistical significance. The relation between adherence and intervention outcome after 6 months was statistically significant ( χ2 = 6.459, p < 0.05). Conclusions This intervention study shows a satisfactory degree of adherence to and the effectiveness of MI. MI-adherence seems more likely in sessions concerned with smoking relapse prevention compared to smoking cessation sessions.
The topic of British-Romanian economic relations after Munich Agreement was under historians scrutiny for more than half a century and there are still new surfaced documents that allow for a better ...understanding of UK's Government motivations towards Romania. The present paper presents some new documents on the meetings of King Charles II had in London during his visit (14-17 November 1938) and an unknown project for a close Anglo-Romanian economic cooperation proposed by Mitiţă Constantinescu, along with the British motivation for rejecting this project.
Motivational interviewing (MI) was developed by Miller and Rollnick as an evidence-based counselling approach for use in supporting people with alcohol problems. Over the years the principles and ...spirit of MI have been reviewed and fine-tuned and the approach has been embraced by practitioners worldwide and across fields.
Since 2001 a number of instruments have been designed to evaluate the fidelity of MI practice. For the purposes of this study, one such instrument is used to assess a self-administered motivational instrument, known as the SAMI, which takes the interviewer role.
The SAMI is evaluated against the MITI 3.1.1, which is designed to assess the extent to which MI interventions perform on five global dimensions. These are evocation, collaboration, autonomy/support, direction and empathy.
The SAMI was assembled based on the principles and spirit of MI, problem solving and goal-setting. The targeted behaviour changes were student learning styles and approaches to study.
The SAMI was distributed, completed and submitted electronically via the university virtual learning environment.
Thirty three mature students of a university which delivered online nursing programme were invited to complete the SAMI. Of these, 25 submitted completed transcripts.
Transcripts of a sample of six completed SAMIs were assessed by a group of teachers and researchers with experience in the use and evaluation of MI, using five-point Likert scales to assess the SAMI on the five dimensions.
Overall, an average score exceeding 4.5 was attained across the five dimensions. Conventionally, such a score is recognised as competency in MI. However, on one dimension (empathy), the rating was three.
This current research confirms that global principles have been observed in the online delivery of MI using the SAMI to probe approaches to study.
Abstract In this evaluation of a method of assessing competence in Motivational Interviewing (MI), participants were asked to interview an actor simulating a substance abuser who was ambivalent about ...an important issue. The interviews were videotaped and subsequently rated for competence in MI using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity code (MITI). Ratings of 43 interviews made independently by trained judges found high levels of inter-rater agreement. Ratings of 11 pairs of interviews carried out by the same interviewer with different simulated patients, a mean of 26 days apart, resembled each other closely. Participants who had been trained in MI were significantly more competent than others. There was a significant association between researchers' and patients' ratings of the extent to which the interviewer demonstrated the spirit of MI. These findings imply that the assessment method produces reasonably reliable and valid ratings of competence in MI and can be used for both clinical and research purposes.
Abstract Aim The study assesses whether a workplace-based educational intervention helps professionals who had trained in Motivational Interviewing (MI) become more competent in it. Design Randomised ...controlled trial. Participants Professionals in health and social services in Dorset, UK, who had received training in MI ( n = 54). Intervention (a) Control: Update day in MI (b) THEME (Twelve Hours to Enhance Motivational Effectiveness): Update day plus 12 weekly worksheets to stimulate reflection on practice of MI, feedback to audiotaped sessions with clients, and three 30 minute sessions of telephone coaching. Measurements Degree of competence in MI, as assessed from videotapes of interviews with simulated patients, carried out at entry to the study and 4 months later. Each videotape was coded independently by two trained coders using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) system. Findings Of the 44 participants who completed the second assessment, those in THEME showed significantly ( p < 0.05) greater increases in the Spirit of MI and overall competence in MI. Conclusions Workplace based interventions may enhance the effectiveness of brief training in MI and other psychological therapies.
