This book discusses salient moments of multilingual encounters and focuses on the interplay between language use by individuals and societies, and language-related inequalities or opportunities for ...speakers. The chapters demonstrate how biographical and speaker-centred approaches can contribute to an understanding of linguistic diversity.
This book examines how literary fiction depicts multilingual practices and incorporates them on the level of the text. Multiple languages surround us today, rendered more visible in the digital and ...globalized age. In literature, too, languages intermingle, often to striking effect. The early twenty-first century has seen a new fascination with the age-old phenomena of literary multilingualism and translation on the part of writers and readers alike. In case studies of contemporary novels by Rabih Alameddine, Olga Grushin, Olga Grjasnowa, Michael Idov, Zinaida Lindén, Andreï Makine, and Eugene Vodolazkin, as well as a new look at Leo Tolstoy’s nineteenth-century classic War and Peace, this book shows how reading can become a translingual process.
Background: Nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population consumes added sugar in excess, with sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) being the largest source. Hispanic individuals are exposed to higher amounts ...of SSBs and SSB marketing and are disproportionally affected by diet-related conditions. Added-sugar warning labels could reduce SSB consumption, and they may be more efficacious when accompanied by a multilingual campaign about the labels and health effects of added sugar. Methods: An online RCT was conducted among 2003 Hispanic adults in the U.S. Outcomes included selecting an SSB for oneself and one's child from a virtual grocery shopping task displaying SSBs and non-SSBs. Conditions included (1) in the control condition, viewing barcodes on SSBs during the shopping task, (2) viewing a campaign about added-sugar warning labels (and barcodes on SSBs during the task), (3) viewing only the added-sugar warning labels on SSBs during the task (without a campaign), and (4) viewing the campaign followed by the warning labels on SSBs during the task. Warning labels in the shopping task depicted a triangle-exclamation-mark icon with "WARNING: High in added sugar" in English. The campaign was displayed in Spanish or English according to participant preference. Acculturation was measured by the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics. Results: Among controls, 58% selected an SSB for themselves compared to 43% in the campaign-only group, 38% in the warning-label-only group, and 27% in the campaign-plus-warning-label group (p-values<0.001 vs. controls). Further, the campaign-plus-warning-label condition was more effective in reducing the selection of SSBs than either the campaign-only or the warning-label-only conditions (p-values<0.001). Outcome among parents selecting beverages for their child followed this same pattern (p-values<0.01). There were no significant differences by acculturation. Conclusions: Added-sugar warning labels were even more efficacious when combined with a multilingual campaign among Hispanic adults.
In this article, the researchers conducted a discourse analysis of multilingualism in Europe and Galicia providing a proposal for its renewal with the aim of promoting Galician language.
Despite being widely considered one of the most important writers of the Spanish language, Rubén Darío is scarcely known in the English-speaking world. This thesis addresses the question of his ...obscurity. By approaching Darío’s oeuvre through translation, it sheds light on the history of his reception in English and on the multilingualism of his writing. In addition, it offers new renderings of the modernista’s poetry alongside a critical discussion of the translation of poetry with a view to improving its practice. The thesis is divided into three different sections which correspond to three different ways of applying translation to the study of Darío’s oeuvre. Section I offers a reading of Darío’s work with an emphasis on his use of translation in his writing, thereby revealing its multilingualism. Section II centres on translation as a critical issue: it analyses the history of Darío’s reception in English by considering historical, cultural, and poetic differences between Spanish- and English-language literature from the turn of the nineteenth century to the present. In addition, it offers a critical discussion of the theory of the translation of poetry vis-à-vis Darío’s writing. Section III puts translation into practice both by offering new renderings of the Nicaraguan’s poetry as well as discussing the issues that arise when looking at existing versions. This thesis argues that the translation of poetry is by and large literary imitation across languages. In this regard, some of the key elements of Darío’s poetry, notably its prosody, have not been rendered successfully into English; nevertheless, cultural and historical differences between Spanish- and English-language literary traditions, rather than linguistic, have impacted on its reception more heavily.
Superdiversity has rendered places, groups and practices complex and the usual tools of analysis need rethinking. Using an innovative approach to linguistic landscaping, the author investigates his ...own neighbourhood from a complexity perspective and demonstrates how multilingual signs can be read as chronicles documenting the histories of a place.
