In the face of the premonitions that pointed to its obsolescence and lethal decline due to the hegemonic digital paradigm, the (hyper)contemporary novel has demonstrated a strong capacity for ...reinvention and rejuvenation, exploring, for example, the materiality and visuality of the printed page. This occurs in the multimodal novel, the narrative subgenre that we intend to characterize. We highlight its strong archival propensity and adduce the reasons that drive the multimodal narrator to integrate and semantically explore resources other than just words (e.g., images, documents, objects, etc.). Starting from this theoretical section, our main objective is to analyze the portuguese novel A Coleção Privada de Acácio Nobre (2016), by Patrícia Portela. This multimodal work presents the "spolio" of Acácio Nobre, an important artist (1869-1974), but shrouded in an aura of silence and, therefore, practically unknown to all. In order to demonstrate his real existence, various types of documentary evidence (photographs, manuscripts, drawings, works of art, and others) are inserted. It is our intention to analyze the various strategies of veridiction and fictionalization deployed by the narrator in the construction of the Acacian figure. In addition, we also consider the possibility of Acácio Nobre (along with Bernardo Soares, his friend) being a semi-heteronym.

"The trips to Italy that Paul Bourget made throughout his life seem to have influenced his literary career and his intellectual, from the dilettante to the successful novelist and critic. How these ...Italian artistic sensations conditioned Bourget to establish psychological criticism that was increasingly systematic? How is this italianisation reflected in his novels and what are the artistic references that determined this inclination? Following the course of this pilgrimage and the development of his writings, Italy seems a point of inflection in the evolution of Paul Bourget’s psychological thought. The purpose of this article is precisely to shed light on this hypothesis and to contribute to a better understanding and reading of Bourget’s psychological criticism."

A singular corpus of the Chilean narrative of the nineteenth century develops the topic of prevented love between Spaniards and Mapuche, according to which the happy ending only be possible through ...the civilization of the indigenous or thanks to their submission to Christian doctrine. For this reason, these are texts nor alien to the debate that is currently present in the theses regarding categories such as multiculturalism, interculturality, cultural plurality, among other approaches and exposes interculturality as “conflictivity” (Fornet-Betancourt, 1998, Dussel, 2005; García Canclini, 2011) according to the hybrid, precarious and inharmonious condition. It is, in fact, a “culturizing” narrative that gives way to paroxysmal outcomes typical of the folletin which at the time were called as typical of an “indian novel” by Zorobabel Rodriguez (1873). Our working hypothesis proposes that these transgressions end up being transferred from the melodramatic imaginary to a historiographical and cultural condition that does not attend to the conflictive but to the hegemonic with respect the conformation of our national identity.
In La oscura memoria de las armas (2008) Ramón Díaz Eterovic explores the topics of memory, Chile’s dictatorship, transition, violence and truth from the perspective of Detective Heredia, who goes ...through the streets of Santiago elucidating a murder that, based on rumours and on a conscious of effort of not forgetting history, it deals with relevant topics that were not talked about on the time of the transition to democracy, where memories become an "endriaga" at the sight of the establishment of the collective memory, birthed on the streets of the city. A memory made of testimonies dripping with the horror, torment and silence that the dictatorship imposed over the inhabitants of Santiago and allows us to configure the urban imaginary of Santiago de Chile at the time of the transition to democracy, introducing a new character into the national literary imaginary: the victim of the dictatorship who seeks justice and revenge.
Palamás, Echevete y yo o el lago asfaltado (Palamás, Echevete and I or the asphalted lake), Mexican Diego Cañedo’s second novel (1945), elaborates the time travel to the Mexican past. The sci-fi ...theme of the novel sustains a social criticism, and imitates H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine plot. In this essay, the sociocritical part of Cañedo’s work is studied, on one hand, because it seems to respond to the social problems of the period 1934-1946; and, on the other hand, because the relations established with Wells’ novel.
